Just wanted to say I really look forward to the Buffy (and Gilmore Girls, and 30 Rock) reactions each week! Enjoyed the Fiddler on the Roof watchalong too, AND the comments sections were very informative about Broadway/musical history! Looking forward to watching the Band of Brothers watchalongs but that's more of a binge-y show for me, so waiting for more accumulation. Anyways, thank you for The Content! ;P

I love the "stone cold jelly donut" line. It's just perfection

Angel died in 1753 - at the end of the 2nd season Angel was sucked into a demon dimension.

A nitpick I have with this show is the writers never taking into account the time of year when writing about sunset. School just started a few episodes ago so we're probably in late September/early October when this episode takes place. And the sun is setting at 5:30 pm? I don't think so. The scene at the end when Angel falls to his knees and Buffy cries always makes me emotional. Poor girl has way too much to deal with.

Eliza is great. What happened to her is just awful. She is SO good playing Faith.

A pretty good monster of the week episode. If I had a complaint it's that with the Oz stuff and the Buffy/Angel stuff it did feel a bit overstuffed and the Debbie plot maybe didn't get the time or attention it needed. I don't really mind the heavy handedness of the show since it's meant for a younger audience like you mentioned and it might be the first time teenagers saw this subject portrayed on screen. Still I think maybe another scene or two could have helped flesh it out. The Buffy/Angel stuff was great though. No complaints from me on that.

Oh yeah, the amount of trauma Buffy has suffered already is insane and we still have the rest of season 3 + 4-7 left. I like a lot of this episode, but I really don’t like how victim blaming it was. I felt like the episode was blaming Debbie for not standing up for herself sooner and I feel that they (Buffy in particular) act like Debbie deserves what happened to her because she didn’t fight back. Like its not too overt, and you can make the case that it’s not what they meant to convey, but to me at least this episode puts waaaay too much blame on Debbie being “weak” when she is literally the victim of physical and emotional abuse.

As it's easy to overlook, I want to point out how wonderful Tony Head is in that scene (speculating what Angel could be like if he returned). Such an anchor for the show's most serious moments. And I love the tender ending too, Buffy achingly emotional as Angel recognizes her, then pensively watching over him at the mansion.

And to add to her bewilderment, she must have thought at some point, "How did he have the presence of mind to put on pants?" 😊

They really need to secure the bookshelves in the library better. They’re always being pushed over on people. Giles needs to do a better job of protecting the books.

"Okay, Gary Busive" STOPPP 😂 Overall, this is probably one of the weaker season 3 episodes, the first two acts are a bit all over the place, but the third act is SO DAMN GOOD! The imagery of Angel on his knees hugging Buffy while an abusive couple both lie dead on the ground behind him haunts me to this day. I'm bummed that the therapist got killed off so quickly, though, that could have been a fun way to explore Buffy's feelings for a few episodes. Ah well, at least he clearly made an impact on her.

Yeah, that could have been an interesting dynamic, having someone Buffy could actually talk to about her significant trauma.

Not one of my favorite episodes but it does boast one of my favorite Giles moments. Him exclaiming "right... bloody priceless" while he collapses after accidently getting hit with the tranq gun. LOL

I personally enjoy when the show goes over the top emotional but when it's with characters we don't know or care about like Pete and Debbie it's really hard to take seriously so it just doesn't work for me. Other than that aspect there's so much to love about this episode! Killing the counselor is a huge waste of potential tho. Would have loved to see Buffy periodically meeting with him throughout the season.
