Even though I picked this one, I haven't watched it for years so I wasn't sure if I'd still like it, or if you guys would like it at all. As you said in the beginning, Mark is totally insufferable. But he's balanced by Audrey Hepburn's beauty and charisma, as well as the exceptional writing, directing, and editing. (I can't imagine what that screenplay must look like!) Your outro discussion is excellent, really bringing up all the different aspects of how to view this movie. You're right about Stanley Donen; he directed two films you've seen: "Charade" and "Singin' in the Rain", and one more you'll see in a few weeks, "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers." I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

I loved the narrative structure so much. The way it completely deconstructed a relationship story into its life cycle by juxtaposing travel segments was just wonderful.

I loved that! And you guys are right, for how dark/serious much of it is, it’s a really fun watch. Finney and Hepburn were wonderful together. I don’t know if they worked together again, but if they did, I need to find it. That being said, I probably would’ve left Mark. Joanna is by no means perfect, but he’s pretty terrible most of the time. They kind of remind me of a Cathy/Heathcliff situation (did you happen to read Wuthering Heights?) in that they’re two people who love each other but can’t figure out how to be anything other than toxic together… Although yes, David is, in fact, The Worst TM. It would be an interesting thought experiment to rearrange the story – tell it linearly – and see if that changes our opinions of them.

He is intolerable- I couldn't see why even a woman in the 1960s wouldn't dump him....they reminded me of Jimmy and "Slippin' Kimmy" in Better Call Saul- as you say- in love but toxic when together
