I started episode one of this show on a whim two hours ago ago and then look to my phone to see this? Sick timing, what the hell, guess we’re watchin’ together 😊

Actuarial Lurker

A bit gruesome for broadcast TV- but realistic in the sense of using the blood spatter, ballistics etc with hyper-empathy to figure out the missing clues.

Actuarial Lurker

Will being on the spectrum is an error. What he has is the gift (curse?) of being like the character Data on Star Trek TNG who has an "emotion chip" that can be turned on or off. He is highly able to shut down immediate emotional reactions in service of heightening the analytical awareness part of empathy and then "turn it back on" later so to speak and then have a DELAYED flooding of the horror, fear, rage. This is much like soldiers in combat who hyper focus while in battle and THEN have PTSD later.

This show is the most violent gruesome show I've ever seen, by far, and that does not die down at all going forward. It can be a bit much at times tbh but it makes sense given Wills character and the way Hannibal describes him in this episode as being unable to escape the horrors in his own mind. We the audience need to experience those horrors alongside him.

That was fascinating! I’m not very familiar with the story/characters, so I’m super interested to see how this unfolds. (I’ve only seen Silence of the Lambs.) The visuals in particular were really well done, very thoughtful. You’re right, ‘gothic horror’ is a good term for it. In particular, I liked the judicious use of the color red, in a variety of shades, everything from terra cotta to oxblood. The striped curtains in Hannibal’s office, the shocking paint choice for the men’s room, various articles of clothing… And then the hospital at the end was almost completely done in shades of blue. Fantastic detail.

Great choice! This is one of the most beautifully shot shows ever! It really is a work of art!
