Gilmore Girls is my comfort show I’ve seen the entire series an absurd number of times and from this episode to the end of the season is my favorite stretch of episodes in the series!

Marion Ross is the same actress that played Trix (Richard's mother), who is now playing Richard's cousin, Marilyn! She is most known for playing Marion Cunningham (Richie's mother), on the tv show Happy Days!

Emily had the right to be angry at the letter, but then took it WAY too far, as Emily always does! The moment between Richard and Emily at the end of the episode was the sweetest they've been in a long while. It was like Richard was choosing Emily all over again when he said he would bury his mother's ashes with his father's, instead of putting half in an urn for their mantle.

It's getting so tough to wait a week after every episode! Buckle your seatbelts guys, and hold on with both hands! You ain't seen nothin' yet!

You laugh but the chapel at Smith College (where both Emily and I went) is the Helen Hills Hills Chapel and yes it was because she married her cousin.

I'd like to note that the writers build up something quite clever over the series that becomes especially clear in this episode. They establish the fact that Emily and Lorelai have sharply different priorities and values—but their wit, sarcasm, and sense of humor are almost EXACTLY the same; only the topics are different. While Rory does banter with her mother, she's also much quieter and cutesier about it, and I think only Emily and Lorelai are truly similar in this regard. For example, that long, tongue-in-cheek story about how Sweetie got her nickname is the kind of sarcastic thing Lorelai would do that Rory probably wouldn't. They also hint a few times in the series that Emily is the quirky, comedic, Lorelai-type figure among the stuffy DAR ladies. I really love this character point, because you don't really notice it at first. But once it clicks, you end up seeing it everywhere in their portrayal. Also, you guys noticed slightly, but the actress for Trix (Marion Ross, of Happy Days fame) was also the one who played Aunt Marilyn in this episode. They just changed the clothes, the makeup, gave her red hair, and suddenly made her a new character.

I love this episode. I thought it depicted well the differents ways of grieving. And I liked seeing Emily and Richard being "out of character" for a while and Lorelai and Rory taking care of them (even if they shouldn't really, not that way at least cause...they were being a lot!). I thought it was sweet seeing Rory and Richard bonding over the bowtie and the tidbit of story behind Richard's childhood.

I love that in multiple interviews, Kelly Bishop has said this episode was her favorite of the series to shoot because Emily was so unhinged. It was palpable how much fun she was having!

Wow! So surprised about how you guys reacted to this epic Emily moment (so much comedy here, too). And I disagree: Richard had secret lunches with his ex-fiancee for 39 years of his marriage with Emily. She has a right to be pissed. I love this ep. :)

‘This lady looks like her’ Gentleman you seriously don’t know that it was the great Marion Ross (famously Mrs Cunningham in Happy Days) who played Trix and is obviously the same person now playing cousin Marilyn!!?? Also it’s a big harsh of you to say Emily should just ‘get over it and she won’ with regard to that awful letter that Trix had sent to Richard on the eve of their wedding! The woman bullied her throughout the entire marriage and she probably never understood why and then she finds out she didn’t think she was good enough to marry Richard and to add insult to injury she wanted him to be with Pennalyn! The betrayal of recently learning that her husband had kept it secret from her that he was having a regular date (as it were) with her was ons thing, but now she finds out his mother thought this woman was a better choice and had written to tell him that, so he knows this information would have felt like a double betrayal and kick in the gut to Emily! She wouldn’t be feeling like she ‘won’ she’d be feeling like she was second choice in Trix’s eyes all those years and took all her abuse for nothing! I don’t blame her for checking out and going on a bender for a few days.
