Fear. Itself

May your demons be fun sized and your halloween candy be king!

This episode gives a nice glimpse into the deep fears of each character. Buffy as the slayer always fears being abandoned and alone both as the slayer (because that is how they have always been) and as normal Buffy with her relationship with her friends and men in her life. (Her dad and angel as examples) Willow fears being seen as not capable or strong. Oz of course fears the werewolf in him hurting the people he loves. Xander fears being unimportant to the group.

Love this episode! It has a similar concept as the previous Halloween episode (magic makes the imaginary come to life), but in a more sophisticated way -- fitting for our more mature characters. It's never pleasant seeing Parker again, but I like that the show is acknowledging that Buffy is still going through stuff. It always bugs me when the psych professor dismisses Buffy's personal matters just because she has all her limbs and isn't actively bleeding out. Not all boo-boos are easily visible, lady! Someone who specializes in psychology should know that better than most.

It's so funny that Anya chose a bunny costume because "bunnies frighten her" lol. Also, I loved the fact that you picked up on the fact that the demon was manifesting each character's personal fears

Xander dressing as James Bond in case they turn into their costumes again is one of the cleverist moves he's ever made at this point

Aw, yes. My mom's annual "candy inspection" which meant going through it and picking out all the things she wanted.

At least one sequence in Fantasia DID scare the shit out of me as a little kid. I remember not loving this episode and skipping it on subsequent rewatches but there is some clever stuff in here.

What a blast! This episode manages to be campy-but-also-genuinely-creepy horror, harrowing re: everyone’s fears, AND breaks it up with some all-timer series humor! — “Hi my name is GOD” — “Actual size” — Bunny Anya I like the line they’ve been walking with post-high school, non-official Giles. We’ve interrupted him having a sexy visit from a “friend”, had him counsel Buffy on being an adult living with roommates, circled back to his dork side with the Halloween decor, AND got the iconic shot of him busting in with a chainsaw. 10/10, no notes. As someone who watched this a a teen, seeing it again in my 30s is WILD because I’m now in the position of realizing how . . . hot Anthony Head and Giles are??? It’s weird, but in a good way!

Near-perfect episode for me. I already love Halloween, but this also has incredible lighting and cinematography, beautiful music and sound design, a brilliant dive into our protags' fears, Anya in a bunny costume, Giles with a chainsaw, and, of course, one of the funniest reveals in television history! No notes!

I think I must skip this episode a lot on rewatches, because I really didn’t remember that scene in the food line - probably I expect Parker and just click ‚next’. Nor did I remember the scene between Joyce and Buffy… ROT13 follows. Naq vg evcf zl urneg bhg. Guvf vf 4k04, nobhg bar naq n unys lrnef gb Gur Obql. I love Xander and Anya in this, Anya is so sweet. Thanks for the reaction!

Let's talk about the Power Ranger in the room: the minor character Edward from this episode was played by Walter Jones, best known for playing Zach the black ranger in several of the iterations of the Power Rangers shows throughout the 90s & 2000s! My only tidbit this week, but it's a fun one nonetheless https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0429432/?ref_=ext_shr

Thew reveal of the demon is one of my favorite gags on the show. "Xander, don't taunt the fear demon." "Why, can he hurt me?" "No, it's just tacky."

Not directly related to this episode, but Im sure by now most of us have heard about the passing of Nicholas Brendan and i just wanted to share a few words. I feel for his family in their grief. I know what it's like to lose a family member you have a complicated relationship with, and even if they hurt you and others, you still grieve. Nicholas Brendan had a long history of addiction, and while i don't know if he ever sought help, it never seemed to stick, based on what the media and his victims have shown us. Dozens of women have accused him of domestic violence, showing the world their stories and the scars he caused. Reports range from fostering inappropriate relationships with fans all the way to punching and beating the women he was involved with. While i won't say I'm glad he's dead, i do hope his victims can find peace knowing that he can't hurt them or anyone else any more, and i wish his family well.
