The Law of Vacant Places

When I started watching S2 with you, for some reason I just couldn't stick with it - I think it was the power dynamic between Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons' characters that just felt unnerving and off-putting. But I was still craving Fargo, so I binged S3 then (for the first time - waaayyy back when it first aired, I loathed Lester SO MUCH I eventually stopped watching). But I will now re-watch S3 with you - can't wait for you to get to certain parts!

Ewan McGregor & Mary Elizabeth Winstead did first meet while filming this season. And I know you haven't watched it yet but Michael Stuhlbarg was in Boardwalk Empire with Steve Buscemi creating an indirect connection to the movie Fargo.

Oh yeah, I watched S1 with you to the end, and it was really satisfying!

Catching up again - that was quite the season opener! Ewan McGregor is an excellent addition to this series! (Twice over, of course.) But…Well, he’s doing his damnedest with the Upper Midwestern accent, but it’s not quite right. That being said, he’s fantastic, so I don’t really care. So, the card game tournament is for Bridge. I didn’t realize it was still so popular, but there we are. And apparently, it was at a Clarion hotel (I might have paused the video to read the signage)… which puts us either in the Twin Cities (MN) or Milwaukee… However, given the accents and other context clues, I’m going to put them in the Twin Cities yet. You don’t hear that strong of a northern accent in Milwaukee (I lived there my first two years of college, just prior to when that bit is set). Also - “Flip a B-word” - I hadn’t heard that one either. Around here (southern WI), that’s called a “you-ee”.

P.S. -- A couple historical/political notes: East German interrogation/ “…this is dumb.” - Well, yes, but remember - East Germany was part of the Soviet system. And even though Gorbachev was in charge at the time, the terror of Stalin had long shadows. Also, Kevin, “I would be much more adamantly defending myself..” Noble, yes, but not as useful as one might hope. Once the State decided, the only thing the individual could do (more often than not) was decide how much they wanted to endure in the name of truth… Your comparisons to the current administration are not wrong. Terrifying as that is.

i've been looking forward to getting to these seasons because of performances i love, and we're finally to the season of carrie coon on fargo!! she is one of my favorite actresses (largely because of her performance in the leftovers), and it's always great to see her whenever she shows up in something... she and tracy have a shared letterboxd account, and it's excellent to see what they're watching from tracy's absolutely unbelievable blu ray collection hahaha

So the card game they are playing is Bridge, a four-player, two-partner game, so each player has 13 of 52 cards. Each game will therefore last 13 rounds, each player playing one card, and the best card of the four wins. You must follow suit, but if you can't you can play anything else, ideally whichever suit has been determined to be trumps, which will then over-ride what's happened already. There's a sort of auction thing that occurs before each round, to determine which suit is trumps. "If Clubs are Trump's, our team will make 8 out of the 13 hands". "Okay, well now, if Hearts are Trump's then our team will make 9 of the 13 hands". (The communication between the partners is very limited, which makes the game challenging and fun). And so on, until one team wins the auction. The losing team tries to stop the objective being achieved. The winning team's action is controlled entirely by one player, their partner's card are exposed for the other three players to see. The fourth player, the "Dummy", watches or goes get a beer or whatever. 🤩 The way that Bridge tournaments work is that each table has a pre-built set of hands for each player (often rigged to ensure unusual, challenging situations). The pre-set hands are returned to the little unit which stays on the table, and the teams move from table to table. So it works out to be a pretty useful way of gauging the skill level of each team, and there's incredible depth to the game.

I immediately recognized the bizarre song being played during the Bridge tournament. If you have a minute, go back to the scene and see if you can understand the lyrics.... 😘 Then check out the original 1973 track: https://youtu.be/KvEW3e0BLn8?si=zWs1SAIm7M2M8NIh [Answer: it's all nonsense language intended to sound like American slang! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisencolinensinainciusol ] + The "Nordic" song was actually some Siberian throat-singing (cf the start of the Dune movie). https://youtu.be/Ml8DscySDL0?si=zo8x_ayTuw5Lhz30
