Bette Midler!

Comments

Ben Gilbert

I first became aware of Bette in her concert movie Divine Madness which had a fairly wide theatrical release in 1980. Barry Manilow started out as her piano player and Katie Sagal was a backup singer for a whle.

So glad you guys enjoyed this. You both had huge smiles on your faces the entire time. A few things I can tell you about this. The sets were not specifically added by HBO. I saw this same tour in L.A. and all the sets seen here were there. The opening number in the hospital bed WAS because she had just been recently hospitalized. She got her start in the original Broadway production of "Fiddler on the Roof," as one of the daughters. From there, struggling in NYC, she got an offer to sing one night a week at the Continental Baths, a gay bathhouse in New York. She was literally performing in front of a room of gay men wearing nothing but towels, and periodically slipping into a dark corner to - you know - "do stuff." Word got around New York quickly that something extraordinary was happening here, and suddenly a lot of other people were showing up for her shows, including a lot of A-list celebrities. Her accompanist for these shows was none other than Barry Manilow, who was entirely unknown at the time. A recording contract soon followed, and the real break - an invitation by Johnny Carson to appear on The Tonight Show. Carson adored her, and she made multiple subsequent appearances, including serenading him on his final show. To this day she gives Carson tremendous credit for advancing her career. I'll never forget the night that I saw this show - I was blown away by her. I wanted you guys and your followers to see it because people who know her only from her later films or some of her recordings have no idea as to what an amazing, dynamic performer she was in her prime, or how "blue" she worked. You should check out some of her performances from a few years later, when she replaced the "Vickie Edie" section and character with a new character, Delores Del Lago, who is dressed as a mermaid. Eventually this grew into a whole section where the Harlettes had the mermaid costumes too, and they all got around the stage in motorized wheelchairs, in which they did elaborate choreography.

I remember watching this on HBO as a teenager and finding it too frenetic, like early Robin Williams- suspecting that it was more drug addled then camp. I did a quick Google and she admits to being so high during live performances that she was practically falling down or off the stage. I will admit that Barry Manilow ranks up withg Billy Joel and Elton John as a singer/songwriter pianist despite the "schmaltz".
