I was just thinking of this movie two days ago! This will be fun, I haven't seen it in ages.

Wow what a blast from the past - Apart from this and The Last Starfighter (which is well worth the watch by the way) Nick Castle also co-wrote Escape from New York with John Carpenter

I don't know. I'm a Jay Underwood fan, and if this was Not Quite Human I would be all over it (By the way, it's a whole franchise, and it's amazing). But this one gets hella depressing at times.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it! This is a childhood favorite of mine. I miss the days of complex and emotionally intelligent family movies. Today, Pixar is one of the the only studios we can consistently count on for those. The acting is so natural and believable and the subject matter while heavy is handled with a deft touch. Lucy Deakins was such a wonderful actress. I was always disappointed that she didnt continue on past the early 90s. Bonnie Bedelia and Fred Savage are also excellent. Jay Underwood was a big thing in this era and he doesnt disappoint. It has such a wonderdul message of perseverance and healing. And having a boy with autism being the catalyst of healing for a damaged family and the damaged family being such a strong pillar for him is a wonderful thing to see from a movie from this era especially since Hollywood still doesn't seem to have this down today. P.S. I thought you guys would pop off for the Louise Fletcher cameo. :)

I know this was a regular theatrical movie, but in my little kid brain I always picture it as a movie-of-the-week on tv. I wonder if that must be how I originally saw it. Could have been a VHS rental too, I suppose, but it always made me think ~TV Movie.~

Rain Man was a more complicated case of the real person who inspired the film had momentarily been misdiagnosed as autistic, as the understanding of his condition and autism were still being understood. Kim Peek was a savant who also had FG Syndrome, and the character of Rain Man was inspired by him.

I hadn't seen this movie since probably 1990 or something when I watched it on TV so it was a "first time in a very long time" watch for me. I also remember seeing Not Quite Human around that time as well so it felt like for a second that Jay Underwood was everywhere on my TV., My memoriy of this movie was not great but I remembered Eric sitting on the windowsill a lot and the part with them flying at the end. I had completely forgotten Fred Savage and Colleen Dewhurst were in this Colleen Dewhurst played the teacher in this and she's been in many things, including The Dead Zone and Annie Hall but I knew her from Anne of Green Gables which she did the year before this. She was married to George C Scott (with whom she performed on stage numerous times) and was the mother of Campbell Scott.
