Really hoping for Last of the Mohicans.

Cosmic Slice

Jeremiah Johnson is an incredible movie. You just need to focus in on Redford.

Love that Johnny Guitar made the list in general!

Chemical Em

misfits or bone tomohawk

Isaacblue72

While there are some great movies on this list, I think High Noon (1952) is an absolute must watch

James B.

The obvious choice is "The Man with No Name" trilogy. But I don't know if westerns filmed in Italy count as American.

Brandon

I don't know that Prime Cut is a western at all, but hot darn it's nothing but fun.

Paul T Hewes

Newer revisionist westerns: 3:10 to Yuma, Slow West, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, First Cow...

Arn McConnell

Prime Cut is great, but I don't think it constitutes a "western." I would add: Once Upon a Time in the West For a Few Dollars More Duck, You Sucker Forty Guns Seven Men From Now Any of the Ranown westerns (The Tall T, Decision at Sundown, Buchanan Rides Alone, Ride Lonesome, Comanche Station) Stagecoach The Wild Bunch The Sons of Katie Elder The Searchers

Suzanne Whyte

Since we're recommending American West themed/Westerns I would recommend The English as a miniseries watch at some point in the future.

Luis

You gotta add The Searchers as it is the quintessential western.

Marla Mize

BTW "Mohicans" happens on the East coast before the Western push.

Well, I voted for Shane and The Misfits. I don't love either, but Shane is a great classic Western, and The Misfits is a great modern Western, one of the first. The thing about westerns is that many of the 60s-90s westerns are closely related to knowing much of the classic westerns and are richer watching experiences for having that knowledge. So, if you are really interested in going through a western journey, I highly recommend starting with the older 40s-50s movies first, then moving onto the 60s-70s, and finally the 80s-00s. People don't understand the quantity of westerns made in the 50s. Anyone that complains of too many superhero movies should be reminded that through much of the 1950s, there was a new western movie screened each week.

Aaron

Oooh. You can follow up Westworld with the tv series!

Suzanne Whyte

I'm not sure if it's technically a Western but Ride With the Devil is worth a watch. Also, i assume they've watched it but Young Guns is a fun watch with a great cast.

Jeremiah

The Ox-Bow Incident Any Budd Boetticher movie, but specifically Seven Men From Now and Ride Lonesome Buck and the Preacher My Darling Clementine and El Dorado/Rio Bravo would be a good starter.

Neill Shaughness

I wish Misfits got more love in general. The final movie for two of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood history. Also a really good movie.

Actuarial Lurker

Joe and Kevin- have you seen the trilogy that makes up A Fist Full of Dollars, A Few Dollars More, and The Good the Bad and The Ugly- assume yes- but if not...should consider

Actuarial Lurker

Voted for Shane, Misfits, and Last of the Mohicans...

kosmickrab

A fun, offbeat "Western" to add would be "The Good, The Bad, The Weird" from Korea.

Rob Bob

Don’t forget Lawrence Kasdan’s Silverado. Also, Sam Raimi’s The Quick and the Dead does not get enough love.

Roland

I haven't even heard of half of these, and I've only seen a couple of them. I've read great (if gory) things about Bone Tomahawk, so that's my vote, but you guys should really commit to The Man With No Name trilogy, it's famous for a reason.

Francesca Carey

I've always loved Cat Ballou. It's a quirky comedy western with Nat King Cole and someone I don't know sing the narration of the movie. To a certain degree, the plot is similar to that of Young Guns.

Francesca Carey

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid should be on the list.

Statmanjeff

didn't see this poll till now. The Cowboys has been my favorite for decades.
