YESSSS! lovely surprise. My FAVORITE movie

Lola Lirola

Mine too! This was my Top Favorite Movie of All Time until Everything Everywhere came along! They're still neck and neck, so yeah.

Leah W.

Eternal Sunshine is such a classic. Great pick!

Lola Lirola

So, I watched this movie in theaters, right next to my (now ex) husband of ten years, as we knew our relationship wouldn't survive another month. It was the last movie we saw together. Which I find fitting. It's still one of my favorite movies of all time, because Gondry's analog, low-fi surrealist metaphor is very much how I see the world too.

Neill Shaughness

Montauk is a beachy area of Long Island. Way out east in Suffolk county. Near the Hamptons

Youtalkingtome

Oh man. What a tight autobiographical tie to a movie. I love those.

Cristy

Thank you, Lola! Great choice.

Luis

This is the rare movie where EVERYONE in it is a red flag lol

Lola Lirola

Lol, seriously! All of them such messy people.

Youtalkingtome

Right?? "Get thee to a nunnery. Like, all of you. Men, too."

In the real world, I’m with Kevin on the notion that they should listen to the tapes so they can be cleared-eyed before they jump back into anything. As for the world of this movie, I’m not sure if the ending is supposed to be optimistic or pessimistic. Instead I think it imparts a message that relationships can (and do) sour, but it’s foolhardy to deny ourselves the opportunity for love and connection (the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful) because it all MIGHT crash and burn at some point. If we all lived with the foreknowledge of every outcome of our lives, allowing us to avoid potential pain, we’d never meaningfully do anything that required courage, faith, trust, or vulnerability in the presence other humans. TL;DR: Perhaps human connection is about the journey, not the destination🙂.

Lola Lirola

Wholeheartedly agree with Kevin's take at the end, and Kristi's comment right here, that life is not an outcome, but a journey. I love that the movie ends on a hopeful but unknowable note. This movie ties very well into Arrival, for example, and Everything Everywhere, in that they're all non-linear meditations about knowing things will hurt, but it all being worth doing anyway. Since we're all watching Buffy on the channel as well, I'm reminded of James Masters saying on an interview a long time ago that everyone has "their" story that they get drawn to, on so many variations. Like how Hamlet, Lion King and The Northman are essentially the same story.

Luis

If you want a little more Gondry I recommend Gabrielle Bell’s The Voyeurs it covers a portion of their relationship.

Leah W.

I really like the ending. Maybe it will work out. Maybe it won't, but it's okay. They had good moments with the bad, and that was an experience worth having even if it ended the first time around in an absolute trainwreck.

Youtalkingtome

I agree completely. They don't need to be together forever for their time together to be worthwhile. I love it.

Youtalkingtome

I absolutely loved Everything Everywhere (I haven't seen Arrival yet).

If it was me personally, my instinct would be to listen to all the tapes together, and be like "okay, we know all our little petty bs. Active attempt to not repeat the past." The whole POINT of making mistakes and memories is to learn from them right? You could argue the reason they might fuck up is BECAUSE they don't have mistakes to learn from. Also, small detail I never see people talk about. Joel's friends, the couple. Every single scene between them, they are bickering about something and annoying each other. Never once do we see them have a cute or romantic moment. But never once does that couple ever consider breaking up or erasing each other. They have a normal, adult relationship that is hard and takes work, but they are doing it. Everyone fights. Everyone says shit they don't mean. Of course when you are forced to sit there and record this tape and justify doing something so drastic you can come up with a million reasons why someone annoys you.

Lola Lirola

Oh, shit! Maybe we need to remedy that.

Lola Lirola

Yeah, I love the friend couple. They feel more grounded than all the other messes that surround them.

Love this movie! I saw it in the theater when it came out and I did go in knowing the premise and was super excited as I had loved Being John Malkovich. Fun fact: In the original version of the script, the ending was darker and shows an older Clementine showing up to erase Joel yet again as they've erased, rinsed, repeated many times over the years. The director, Michel .Gondry, is a fantastic music video director. Google the ones he's done and a lot of them utilize some remarkable in-camera practical effects. I highly recommend the videos for Kylie Minogue's "Come Into My World" and Cibo Matto's "Sugar Water." As a side note, I love how Kate Winslet's character is like taking the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope, which was SUPER common in a bunch of movies around this time, but making her an actual, deeply-flawed person instead of just a fantasy. The term wasn't coined until 2007 in an AV Club review of Elizabethtown (ironitically about a character played by Kirsten Dunst) but one of the main problems of the trope is that the MPDG isn't writeen to have any really inner life and only exists to draw the male protaganist out of himself. Here, Clementine is a fully-realized person.

So you've seen this and Being John Malkovich, Adaptation is next. I think it's his best work. Then you can try to watch Synecdoche, New York if you're brave enough. But Charlie went a bit too far for me to follow in that one.

Ben Gilbert

I think both character's experiences have changed them, even though they don't remember why. So the outcome may not be the same.

Glad to see a lot of people in the community also have this as one of their favorite movies. And you highlighted it in your discussion, but I love how the ending is really a Rorschach test for the viewer. Personally, I come away feeling that the future is indeterminate and that they are neither doomed nor guaranteed a “happily ever after”. But even if you have a pessimistic, fatalistic outlook, I think there is still something moving about saying I am going to accept the pain that comes with a relationship that will inevitably end to experience the beautiful moments of connection along the way. I also have a slightly different take than on the tapes. I think a lot of people take them at face value as lessons about the relationship. While I certainly think there are grains of truth about who they are and their flaws, I also think those are the immediate reflections of two hurt people who are lashing out and saying what they need to say to cope. Both on the tape and in their final fight in the relationship, Joel talks about how Clementine sleeps with/uses the prospect of sex to get people to like her. I don’t think that’s even close to the truth. It’s just a narrative he’s using to hurt her while he’s hurting and to justify how he’s better off with the relationship being over. While you certainly want to have foreknowledge of the past, I think there’s also a risk of the scar tissue causing you to see ghosts in the new relationship that aren’t really there.

Lola Lirola

Oh, I don't even know that! Gonna find it and check it out. Thanks for the recommendation!

I saw this movie only once around when it first came out.. maybe within 3-4 years of it coming out when I was between 13-16 ish…I loved this movie and it became an instant favourite and never left that list. But one I could never revisit because I wanted to keep that memory pure. (Or did not want to face it!) Rewatching it 20 odd years later was an interesting experience. I understand the title better and why it is not something to be desired. I don’t want eternal sunshine of a spotless mind. I want a mind marked with memories both good and bad with days of rain and storms along with the sunshine! Life is a journey- not a destination! Love is a journey too. It’s made up of all our experiences combined. Bad relationships are like wrinkles. Might seem unwanted but they are the proof of a life lived and chances taken!

Joe- Montauk is the Easternmost tip of Long Island. it's slightly further out than the Hamptons and forms the east end of the 120 mile island. The NYC boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn are the west end, Nassau County is in the Middle and starts about 14 miles from Manhattan running out to about 40 miles out and Suffolk County forms the East End of Long Island. https://www.discoverlongisland.com/plan-your-trip/thematic-map/

My wife and I have been to the Gurney's Inn in Montauk many times as a 3-4 day romantic weekend getaway...its essentially looks directly out into the Atlantic and accesses a private beach. You can rent a cabin or multi-room apartment with kitchen wrap-around ceiling to floor windows and head out onto the beach at 5am to watch a pristine sunrise, head to the spa and get massages or seaweed wrap exfoliations where you sit under a lamp wrapped up like a burrito, swim in their indoor olympic pool or hit the gym. The Harvest on Fort Pond restaurant is one of the best seafood restaurants in NY State. https://www.gurneysresorts.com/montauk https://www.harvestfortpond.com

That is why Severance such a brutal concept- "you cannot find peace by avoiding life"- Virginia Woolf, The Hours

This is one of Jim Carrey's best performances.. right up there with The Mask.

If you remember when Joel went there, he had to give them everything of Clementine to avoid any memory triggers. But Clementine still had Joel's stuff since Patrick was using it to manipulate her so I think she got some stuff slightly back that way. I think ultimately the film is optimistic. Because it's isn't about whether or not they will get together again. It's that they had the courage to try. They know it may not work out, but that's how life is, and the good memories and the bad memories are important to have so you can learn from them and you can't experience good without risking some bad. They won't have Eternal Sunshine and their minds will not be Spotless. But there will atleast be experiences in it.

two pennies no waiting

I would listen to our own tapes alone first and then decide mutually whether to listen to the other's tape together or not at all. I don't think I could ever try the relationship again without a blueprint understand how I've hurt someone and try to avoid the heartache. I like this movie. I find the concept and the crew too disturbing to get too invested in the love story, but still think it is brilliant. Does the lack of Jim Carrey include not seeing How the Grinch Stole Christmas? If not, maybe pin it for a holiday poll, but I'd still vote for White Christmas even if you did so maybe not...haha

Youtalkingtome

Adaptation is coming up on our schedule, and would love to eventually see Synecdoche, New York.

Tom Rand

I think Synecdoche, New York is one of the best films I've ever seen and also so heartbreaking (and funny!) that it's tough to go back and rewatch. Especially after Philip Seymour Hoffman's passing.
