As much of a huge Disney history fan as I am I have never gotten around to seeing this. This will be a fun first time watch

Tyler Explains It All

Fun fact: when they wanted to make Mary Poppins as a musical in London, Mrs. Travers said that she would agree to it if all people involved were British and no one from the original movie production was involved.

If anyone wants to learn more about Disney check out the podcast One Year season five 1955 episode 2. It covers the Crockett craze but also the opening of Disney Land and their is audio of Walt Disney speaking to a group and you actually hear him curse.

Jonathan

She really did fight Disney till the end never to make a sequel. Don and the Sherman Brothers went on to make Bedknobs and Broomsticks instead.

Jonathan

This movie got a big push towards being made when the Sherman’s released their memoir and Disney made a documentary about them called The Boys in 2009

So cool you reacted to this one right after seeing Mary Poppins! That's great. This really is a beautiful movie. Leaves me weeping every time.

Mitchell Dahlstrom

Love this movie! You missed in the credit sequence you have all the photos, but it is followed by a snippet of actual recordings of Travers. Gives a nice insight and appreciation for Emma Thompson’s portrayal

After this movie came out I researched PL Travers. The depiction of her in this film is not exaggerated. She was a bitter, disappointed woman who could not let go of her past. While the scene of her and Walt in London is made up, the story Dlsney relates about his childhood is real. I've always thought it interesting that Travers internalized her pain and could not escape it and Walt took his, created an empire that brought joy to millions. She did not like the final film and after the premiere, cornered him and told him they had alot of work to do, that the animation had to go. Walt told her, Pamela, that ship has sailed. In a way, I feel Disney sort of misrepresented his intentions to her, but on the other hand, the film set her up for life finanacially and made her creation far more popular, immortal and long lasting that it would have been without the film. I am so thrilled you watched this right after seeing Poppins. And I cry, too, at the end!

My own dad passed in late 2011. The ending got me then and still does to this day. Colin Farrel was tremendous. -by skipping the credits, you missed actual recordings of Mrs. Travers during the actual meetings.

After you've seen Saving Mr. Banks, the end of Mary Poppins never ever hits the same way again.

I saw this when it came out but hadn't watched it since then. It was lovely to revisit this! Man, the Sherman brothers were truly at the top of their game with Mary Poppins. They did great work before and after it but the songs in Mary Poppins are truly something special. I can only imagine how fun it must have been for the Saving Mr Banks actors to play them for this. I would have just had a ball on set! And I'm happy that it focused so much on the writing and pre-production elements. I'm glad I didn't have to watch scenes of "Julie Andrews" and "Dick van Dyke" filming the movie. Their faces are iconic and I'm glad they could use clips from the actual movie instead of having to recreate them with different actors.

the movie is pretty accurate. I think it made the Walt-Pamela relationship nicer than it was like im pretty certain he really hated her in the end and vice versa. However, I think when the movie came out Emma Thompson said she listened to all the tapes. Also Pamela said in the past that she did ask them why Mr Banks had been made to be such a monster and it was reported that she cried during the whole film and then commented on the penguins. So all those sort of these scenes did happen.

shan

she put that in her will!

JustALilTired

Highly recommend you go back and watch through the credits…they play some of the actual recordings from her sessions with the writing team. Emma Thompson did not overplay her stringent, prickly attitude at all.

Tara

I'd had Saving Mr Banks on my list of films to buy for you because I really loved it as a companion piece to Mary Poppins which was a favourite I grew up watching regularly. When I saw someone had bought Mary Poppins for you I jumped to get this one soon after - I agree the impact is a lot more significant if you have seen the source material. Glad it had the intended affect and you oth enjoyed it so much, was a treat to watch along with you.

Clare Manion

Goodness, I forgot just how stacked this cast is! Has Tom Hanks ever been more charming? Just delightful. Good memory, Joe! Katie Nana was indeed one of the nannies at the beginning of Mary Poppins (she’s the one who quits). And in general, you guys remember so many details and tunes - that’s wonderful! As much as I wanted to say 'oh no, please don't cry', I think it's entirely justified. The last third or so of this movie is exceptional. The story of her father and the guilt and self-punishment (denial of joy) that she carried for so long - to see her release some of that at the premiere is both devastating and uplifting. A kind of catharsis. And yes, this really does put the movie - especially its ending - in a whole new light... My brother bought his daughter a kite for Easter (she's three) and this was the first thing I thought of. Also, totally agreed, Ralph the driver is the best. The world could use more Ralphs.

Paul T Hewes

I did the same. She had an adopted child how said something to the effect that he didnt think she had any love in her to give anyone.

Jonathan

Great timing Tara and thanks for buying it. Hopefully I'll be able to introduce them to more live action Disney classics in the not too distant future.

Jonathan

This movie has stuck with me all night

Daren

You missed the credit sequence!

acidnova

You and me both! I'll be purchasing some soon!

Erin

I really enjoyed this film, although it does differ a bit from what actually took place between Walt and P.L. Travers. And since no one has commented on it yet, Ruth Wilson (The Affair, Luther) and Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under, Brothers & Sisters) are very underrated in this movie yet play such integral roles.

Kathy A

I love that they had Whitford say, “Man is in the forest,” when Walt was approaching. That was something the Disney people actually used while Walt was in charge! It’s a line from Bambi.

Kathy A

For THE rock star biopic, you have to see Rocketman, about Elton John. It’s a musical biopic that actually embraces its identity as a musical, with full-blown choreographed numbers and all the heightened emotions that define the genre. It’s a really great film, one of my favorites of the past 20 years. It helps that everyone does their own singing, no lip syncing other voices involved, and Taron Egerton, who plays Elton, does a great job of sounding like him.

This is just one of those movies that really goes tough, and gets me. Maybe because I had an alcoholic parrent, I don't know. But it is a masterpiece, and really made me appreciate Mary Poppins in a different light, too. Thank you very much for the reaction!

Maddy D.

I loved rocket man and it had the same theatrical broadway feel as across the universe to me which made it that much better

Youtalkingtome

It absolutely changed how I view some of the nuance of Marry Poppins for me as well.

Youtalkingtome

I have seen Rocket Man, and it is definitely one of the better biopics.

Youtalkingtome

I was curious about the historical accuracy of the film, although this was a terrific movie regardless.

Youtalkingtome

I really liked the structure of this film, peeling back the layers of Travers's trauma while she struggled with herself through the adaptation process.

Youtalkingtome

Thank you so much for that! I am grateful we were able to watch both so closely together. Saving Mr. Banks had so much more impact as a result.

Youtalkingtome

I just watched through it. WHOOO, she was a tough one.

Youtalkingtome

I think Mr. Banks had such a wonderful redemption arc.

Youtalkingtome

Right?? I am just wrapping up editing our Mary Poppins reaction, and the redemption arc of Mr. Banks is so much more poignant.

Youtalkingtome

If the depiction here is accurate, Walt definitely misrepresented some things to her, particularly the animation. But I do agree, she needed the financial boon the film gave her, so it all worked out well.

Youtalkingtome

I'm okay not having a sequel, but so glad they were able to get Mary Poppins done.

Youtalkingtome

I don't know, that seems like a tough stance to take. She became very wealthy off this movie (she was indeed on the brink of financial ruin before the Disney deal). Like or hate the movie, she was absolutely rescued by Disney, and she never seems to acknowledge that very factual detail.

Andy Schreiber

I've been interested in this movie, but never got a chance to see it. Mary Poppins has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid, but I never read the books and I had no knowledge of Travers' life. I was NOT expecting anything like this. The film was completely engaging from the jump, and then became more emotional than I was even prepared for. Joe, I was crying right along with you! Hanks and Thompson are both incredible actors, as are Farrell, Giamatti, and actually the entire cast. I grew up watching "The Wonderful World of Disney" every Sunday night, and Hanks captures Disney's cadence and style perfectly, without ever cheapening it into a nightclub style impression. Thanks for another really great watch!

kosmickrab

Joe, absolutely get the Mary Poppins Blu-ray. Not only for the fantastic special features, but so you'll have to movie to watch whenever. Especially now, I don't know if you've read, but Disney has shut down their home entertainment department entirely.

"she'll come around by..." Oh dear oh dear oh dear... boys are in for an journey today. From her interviews she came around to it being a decent film, just not an adaptation of her books, by the late 70s.... it is generally understood she cried all through the premier because of how much didn't didn't like it....
