I have been looking forward to this since I saw it on the schedule. I attended the same high school as the writer/director of this film that this movie is based on. I never met him he got expelled for being gay 2 years before I started there. This is a sanitized PG version of what was in reality way darker but I understand making this marketable for 2004. I’ll leave more comments after I watch the reaction.

Jonathan

Biggest difference up front. The real school is nowhere near as nice and normal as the school in Canada where they shot this

Oh man, this is a blast from the past for me. I was 14 when this came out and still remember it very well. Great cast!

The amount of times I’ve wanted to hold up a bible and say “this is not a weapon” is depressing.

that girl

"This is my bible. There are many like it, but this one is mine."

Youtalkingtome

Bibles, flags, and Lee Greenwood songs: the modern day culture war weapons.

Cristy

Thank you, Stephanie! I have been waiting for this one, can't wait to watch with the guys.

Youtalkingtome

What a ridiculous school. I read a little about it after seeing your comment. Sounds like a cult.

Paul Komoroski

Have always liked this movie and was excited to see it on the list! Thanks, Stephanie, for picking it! Am thinking Joe and Kevin will enjoy it.

All of the archetypes are recognizable from the real thing. I was definitely the Roland character. It was either going to this school or the one from season 4 of the wire. This school was more fun than the real one we were more like Footloose no dancing, upbeat music or any sign of women’s liberation. No Halloween (on Oct 31 we had to watch videos about how virgins would die tonight at the hands of satanists because we wanted to dress up and eat candy)

Jonathan

Sadly most people who grew up and bought in to this environment ended up married at 18 so they could have sex, multiple kids by 21 and rehab or worse by 25. The Hillary Faye’s of the world frequently ended up as recruiters at Liberty University or much worse places. They would call and harass you daily to join their institution. My goto line was “I’m glad Jesus loves you so much so I know when I go to hell it will be a little better because you aren’t there”

Jonathan

I feel sorry for anyone who is trapped in one of these situations especially since there are churches with good people who treat people well and have a grip on reality if they have a need in their lives for that type of spiritual environment (even if those kinds of places are harder to find in red states these days)

Courtney

Living through the “Cool Jesus, cool pastor “ era of the 00s was, well, something. This movie is hilarious and gives me stress flashbacks at the same time. My cousin was SUCH a Hilary Faye and is (trying to be) an influencer now. What a surprise.

A random question for you, if you’re willing to answer: were there any relationships between teachers and students there? I grew up in the same state, but a bit further south, and this was DEFINITELY a thing at our local Christian school. I had friends and relatives going there that thought nothing of it, while I, the public school heathen, was horrified. It creeps me out so much to think back on.

Jonathan

Yes, but it wasn’t as creepy as it seems. The only criteria to teach there was you having already graduated from there so there were people who graduated and got jobs there while their boyfriend who was a couple years younger were still a student.

Tyler Explains It All

As an atheist and anti-theist, I found this movie very interesting. Also, Mandy Moore did an amazing job playing Hilary. So infuriating.

Alejandra Buitrago

I went to catholic school all my life, but Saved was always hilarious to me since middle school because it’s SO accurate of Christian megachurch vibe vs Catholic mentality which was more more cultural/ ever so slightly more open minded/ accepting.

Ashley Thomas

so glad you watched this. i love this movie. it has so many good lines and funny parts but also a lot of heart and good messages.

Youtalkingtome

Definitely. It was such a fun blend of frustration seeing an awful person like Hilary use the system to manipulate and hurt other people and glee with seeing her comeuppance.

Youtalkingtome

I thought about guys like Joel Osteen while watching this. There is definitely a mega church vibe to this school.

Stephanie Bedworth

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it! I've always loved this one. It's a simple story with a simple message and it just works. Little fun fact, if you didn't know, Eva Amurri, who plays Cassandra, is Susan Sarandon's daughter. Once you know it, you can't unsee it cause she looks a lot like her.

Well, Joseph raised Mary’s baby without asking questions . . . 😀 (okay, he did ask some questions) Iirc, this was really Macaulay Culkin’s comeback - not in the sense of like huge success, but his first role in a long time and first as a grownup actor and it was nice to see him be doing well. He had a rough patch there as a young person.

Just don't hold it upside down while tear gassing protestors

My publicly funded "magnet" high school (which went from 7th to 12th grades) taught 13 year olds in 8th grade how to properly use condoms in health class AND had a school-funded Gay Rights club (back in 1980) that met on school grounds with a a faculty advisor...we had zero teen pregnancies and no gay bashing...and this was in Reagan Era NYC (1978-1984). As a straight male I didn't appreciate until later how important all of that was until I hit early adulthood in the early 90s and witnessed Newt Gingrich and fundamentalist absorb the GOP

Actuarial Lurker

The GOP courting these fanatics in the 80s is what ruined our country...if we get another MAGA president before they are all prosecuted all the high schools in the US will look like this...

Actuarial Lurker

"That's because your Mom has her missionary position" almost made me spit out the soda I was drinking....

Willow Dalton

I forgot how much I love this movie.

I was waiting for this one, because I knew you guys would have quite a lot to say. Growing up, 2 of my best friends were kids of a Baptist pastor, and I got to see first hand all the dysfunction that came with that level of religiosity. It definitely pushed me away from everything they espoused. I could write an essay, but who has the time? Also, I started watching this last night while eating breakfast, and the Melania joke literally made me laugh loud enough to startle my cat and start my day off right, so thanks for that.
