What a coincidence it is that this episode was about a plagiarized joke & you just watched an episode of Only Murders in the Building where a comedian who was credibly accused of stealing material for her sketch show made an appearance.

A true comedy of errors and it works! I honestly couldn’t care less about the romance but the rest of the show still holds up rather well!

If you're looking for more Merritt Wever, she is great in Edie Falco's show Nurse Jackie. I highly recommend it.

Daniel Lydford

I'm sure the not using the writing room is a self reference for Sorkin.

Michael Bennett

"Of course, we'll never know because he only has conversations when he gets to write what everybody else says, too" is another very well-aimed shot at himself. :)

Michael Bennett

Ah, the broken glass gag! He got me with it again. The plagiarism thing kills me, you HAVE to fire the guy. There's no option, the guy has to go. Yeah you can avoid making a press release, you can even delay his firing to make it not look bad, but he doesn't write for you anymore.

Jonathan

Christine Lahti the reporter is the wife of director/producer Tommy Schlamme. Christine had an underrated drama series in the early 2000s Jack and Bobby that just became available on streaming for the first time. It’s considered one of those cancelled too soon series. However if it had taken off John Slattery who asks I starred in it wouldn’t have been available for Mad Men.

Carl Wilson

The thing that bothers me most about that whole plagiarism storyline is that those jokes were hack jokes Matt should have turned down flat.

It’s wild to me that the show can be genuinely funny when the characters are interacting, but the comedy of the sketch show is so bad.

Youtalkingtome

I agree. You can’t keep a guy who pulls that on your writing staff. Ever.

Youtalkingtome

That’s a really good point. I had forgotten about that.

Roland

Which comedian are you referring to?

Youtalkingtome

No John Slattery on Mad Men would have been a tragedy.

I was talking about Amy Schumer. But, to be fair, joke theft is a pretty common allegation among comics. George Lopez accused Carlos Mencia of stealing nearly 15 minutes of his stand-up routine & rumor has it they actually had a physical fight over it. Damon Wayans Sr. claims Robin Williams stole material but that his manager would pay off comedians to keep them quiet. Robin basically admitted it on Marc Maron's podcast by explaining that comedians hang around comedy clubs so it isn't uncommon to hear a joke & then months or years later unconsciously retell a version of it without remembering where the idea came from. Dane Cook was accused of stealing bits from Louis C.K. & that became a plotline on his show "Louis." One of my favorite comedians, Bill Hicks, went to his grave claiming Denis Leary stole both his jokes & on-stage persona.

As a once obsessed River Phoenix fan, I remember Christine from "Running on Empty" & she was fantastic on "Chicago Hope." I just added "Jack & Bobby" to my Hulu watchlist & I was surprised to see that in addition to John Slattery two other Mad Men alumni were also part of the cast - Matt Long & Jessica Pare.

Jonathan

Running on Empty is a great movie. I was thinking of that when they were watching Ordinary People

Paul T Hewes

We wouldnt know it because Mad Men wouldnt have been Mad Men without him. I dont know it even gets past the pilot.

She was also great on "Evil", a sci-fi/crime series that I liked who got 4 seasons, with Michael Emerson among others. I recommend it.

The joke about ADHD , etc kids is not good, huh? It's very "ok boomer"
