I love several aspects of this episode (Spike mainly), but man am i disappointed in Giles taking the side of the colonizer throughout the episode. It seems so out of character to how thoughtful and open minded he is otherwise. I get that they needed a character to take that view point but Anya, Xander, or even bringing in Joyce would have been more appropriate to voice that arguement

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, Giles was REALLY off-putting in this episode. His dialogue was rough.

A ricer is a hinged handheld tool with small holes that you put the cooked potato in and then squish it out the holes to break it down to make mashed potatoes. A mixer works better but a ricer is good for fast mashed potatoes because it can squish the potato out of the skin so you don’t need to peel them.

Leah W.

Definitely a rocky execution on the themes, but Spike is so funny this episode. He is hilarious, and clearly not adapting well to his new situation lol

James Roberts

Buffy had a throw a way line in the beginning of the episode mentioning Joyce was visiting family out of town. Hence, no Joyce at Thanksgiving. Spike is pure gold throughout the episode. I was wondering if you knew Charisma Carpenter was part of the Angel cast. Looking forward to you seeing Cordelia deal with Angel's broodiness on a full time basis.

James Marsters had an interview where his notes for his return to the scoobies in this episode were to play the Cordy role and state what you are thinking, especially when you are thinking “these guys are being idiots”. I think he does it really well.

nj

ricer: like a garlic press, but bigger.

Youtalkingtome

It's really wild that they had to read instruction on how to make mashed potatoes. Wait, so you boil the potatoes??

Youtalkingtome

That's an apt observation of his role here for sure.

Youtalkingtome

Oh, being able to skip the peeling step sounds fantastic, actually.

BVS giving cozy vibes. Love it. I have to say, this season is the most imaginative and you can see the Scooby Gang growing up and dealing with more adult, complex issues.

ScarlettMi

Hey, you’re the ones who didn’t know what a ricer was. LOL There’s a whole world of mashed potato possibilities out there to discover. I like butter, evaporated milk, and roasted garlic in mine. I never use a ricer though.

I think you’re the first reaction channel I’ve followed that just did Buffy and plans to do Angel later at some point. I’m curious how the experience will play out for you. I know that obviously a lot of people back in the day may have only watched one or the other, but it’ll be interesting actually following that journey. I know this episode has its messy elements to it, but it also has some truly great comedy. Spike’s commentary on the fight, Angel being petulant about people thinking he’s evil, Xander with the syphilis, and topping it all off is that end shot.

- I enjoy this episode for the jokes and the humor -- and at least the *attempt* to have a serious conversation about the unfortunate implications around Thanksgiving. A lot of it hasn't aged well. though, especially the portrayal of the Native American characters, who are basically walking stereotypes. - A BEAR! YOU MADE A BEAR! ... UNDO IT! UNDO IT! Spike is so great in this episode. Except for his comments about "dusty countries." Yikes. - It feels like Angel's role in this episode is a little pointless, as it doesn't seem like Buffy was in any extraordinary danger -- at least no more than she is on a regular basis. “A bear?! You made a bear!! Undo it, undo it!” is maybe the funniest line reading I have ever seen. Spike’s always been a funny character, but now that that’s pretty much all he’s allowed to do, James Marsters’ comedic timing is really getting to shine!

Carl Wilson

I almost always skip this on rewatches, even though there is a lot of cute interaction among the Scoobies (plus Spike). The debate among them about what can be done about historic wrongs is not too bad, really, including that guilt on its own is no actual help. But that's undone by it all happening while we get this crude vengeful-Indigenous-spirit stereotype and no presence whatsoever from contemporary Indigenous people (of which California has plenty).

Daniel Lydford

Spike & Gilles is the buddy sitcom that we needed.

James B.

I forgot that they dropped that Cordy comment in this ep. Ah well. It'll still be a nice reaction.

Mariska Costeris

Monster of the week episode that could have been in season one, but at least there is Spike.

Suzanne Whyte

Chipping the vampires doesn’t really make sense. If you want to stop vampires harming people why not just kill them? As long as they’re alive there’s a risk that something could go wrong with the chip. Plus if they can’t feed they’ll just die slowly and painfully anyway.

Jamie Morgan

Yeah, this is a frustrating episode. It has some of the best jokes interspersed with very clunky debate on colonialism and, uh...white people beating up Native Americans...anyway... I know she's an evil vampire now, but I'm super proud of Harmony for standing up to Spike! And even in his short tenure on his own show, you can see David Boreanaz has become a *much* better actor. It's a shame we won't get to see your surprise at seeing Cordelia show up on Angel, but there's plenty for you to get shocked by that won't be spoiled by this show. I'm still really excited for you to get to it!

Jamie Morgan

I don't know if you've seen the show before, and I'll try not to spoil it too much for the boys regardless, but that will be delved into later on.

Suzanne Whyte

I have seen the show but I occasionally like to imagine what I would be thinking if I was watching it for the first time and I would definitely be wondering about the point of the chips. They’re a lot of extra expense and effort so why bother? Maybe the US military has an innate belief in the sanctity of life and doesn’t want to harm a living creature if they can find another options but somehow I think not.

Roland

Hey, the Spanish were bad too! :D

Youtalkingtome

Me,too! We have a pretty good idea when we will be able to add Angel to the schedule.

Youtalkingtome

For sure, this and "Beer Bad" feel more like S1 monster episodes.

Youtalkingtome

Honestly, I wasn't really surprised; I assume there will be MANY of the characters who we lost to graduation appearing on one of the shows down the road (I also feel like we will probably see Faith again on one of the two series at some point).

Youtalkingtome

That's a really good point. It's tricky, given the time period. I feel like addressing the fact that Columbus / Thanksgiving is really a messed up thing to celebrate given the reality (especially on a mainstream show like this) was probably pretty new for white audiences at the time, so the clunky way they handled it was just a clumsy early step in trying to get people to consider reality.

Youtalkingtome

He really got to carry the comedy of this episode, which was pretty unexpected given the setup of the episode. It worked really well.

Youtalkingtome

I do respect that they made an attempt to address the atrocities of the genocide of Native Americans, but yeah, the murderous walking stereotypes could have been done better.

Youtalkingtome

I use sour cream in mine. I love mashed potatoes. You could never bribe me with sweets. A cake? No, thanks. But a giant vat of mashed potatoes? I'm listening.

Youtalkingtome

"You made a bear" was such a great line, and a perfect delivery.

Lola Lirola

I mean, we already have Harmony over here! And she's so incredibly fun. I love how irritating she is, and how exasperated Spike is any time she's near, and you can tell they both have so much fun as actors with it.

Carl Wilson

That's generous. I do think more of us who were adults in the 90s (I was in my 20s for most of it) were aware of these things than younger people tend to assume now. But I also know I was in particularly politicized circles (and in Canada, where Native issues are more prominent), and certainly the mainstream media were lagging behind on these things until internet feedback came along to push back on them. But BtVS, while feminist in concept and progressive in a lot of ways, was definitely not especially enlightened about race, so fair enough to give it some points for trying here.

Tara

I'm interested to see your reaction to the Angel half of this crossover, might give you more context to his appearance here.

On rewatch I see Anya kind of fills in as what Cordelia was, both have no filter between brain and mouth. She'll tell you directly what she thinks. Both are great for that.

Jontor11

Yay! You will be watching Angel as well! I hope you will try to get up to speed with Angel vs Buffy. There is already a cross-over you've missed. And Angel showing up here has consequences for both shows. Originally, these shows always aired together. Buffy 4x01 then Angel 1x01. So Angel showing up here was pretty much announced in Angel 1x07. Love you guys.
