Some Mysteries Are Better Left Unsolved

I actually think this is the worst episode of the show. But that's good news I guess.

Suzanne Whyte

The voice actor for the female enforcer is Shohreh Aghdashloo. She’s one of the stars of The Expnse but I’m not sure about her other roles.

Divinerights

No season 3, but there’s plans for other stories taking place in the world.

Daniel Andersen

Piltover is the city of progress (technology) and there are other notable cities known for other things. The "world" is called Runeterra. All I can reveal really. When I played the game, some of the characters I played was Jayce and Vi/Violet, but there are certain game modes seperate from the main game, that you play a random character, so you really can try every character. Each character has their own unique playstyle and abilities. The real skill is that theres 150+ characters and you have to know how to play against each character. These characters all come from different cities/parts of Runeterra.

I must have seen this intro 40 or 50 times and I'm not tired of it. It might pay to keep an ear out for Imagine Dragons, the band playing the song, here and there. The style of the show is its strength I think. Musically and artistically, every exchange of dialogue going straight for the heartstrings, every shot composed for maximum drama, every outrageous character design, even the fluffy Professor Heimerdinger who should be at least very out of place. It brings to mind the show Foundation if you want to check out something similarly gorgeous, with Isaac Asimov's writing.

My understanding of what happened is that Vi is giving herself up. Ekko heard the whole conversation between Vander and the enforcer when she gave him the tube, so he told Vi about the tube when he was explaining that Vander had a deal with them. In my opinion the big hint that she gave herself up was that she retrieved the stuffed animal that the childhood bully threw out of her reach - something she apparently hadn't done to this point - and gave it to Powder. It feels like a last goodbye

I love the intro. The music and artistic style are beautiful.

Youtalkingtome

Excellent! So far, this seems like a really fleshed-out, intricate world, and I would love to see more from it.

Youtalkingtome

Thanks for that! I just looked at her iMDB, and I haven't seen The Expanse, but I'm pretty sure I know her from The Punisher.

Suzanne Whyte

Also, I didn’t recognise her voice at all and I was surprised to see that Vi was voiced by Hailee Steinfeld.

I love this show but this episode did throw me for a loop initially with its quirky worldbuilding after the relatively grounded pilot. Even after watching the whole show more than once I don't think I quite understand the geography of Piltover, is the undercity just across a river from the upper city on a hill or is it actually below the upper city somehow? Viktor is voiced by Harry Lloyd, Viserys Targaryen (Daenerys's asshole brother) from Game of Thrones. Jayce is voiced by Kevin Alejandro, who I don't think you've seen on the channel but I know him mainly from True Blood. Mel Medarda is voiced by Toks Olagundoye who is mainly known as a voice actor, I know her voice from the 2017 Ducktales reboot (which was an excellent update of a cartoon I loved as a kid in the 90s).

dys

Shohreh Aghdashloo has SUCH a great voice.

I read Asimov's Foundation books when I was young, and gave the show a chance. Lee Pace is great in it, as well as the always amazing Jared Harris, but I really did not like anything else about it.

Youtalkingtome

Okay, good. Thank you for saying this, because the geography is still throwing me off. In the pilot, it felt like The Lanes was directly below Pilltower, but now it looks like the undercity is across a bridge (and, I suppose, a body of water? They did jump across a drawbridge at one point.)

dys

This is kinda verging on spoilers for the next episode tbh...

Leah W.

Is it? That's what I understood was happening based on my initial watch

Divinerights

If it helps, think of the undercity as being vertical

Zach Hershman

That needs to be rectified. The Expanse is an excellent show.

Amelie W

I can't really comment on the performances, or writing. I've just been spellbound by the visual style.

dys

There's some very cool visuals for sure. It's just that from the chunk of the first season I've seen, Lee Pace's character is kind of in a completely separate story which is pretty interesting in its own right but the main story is that tired old Lost-style mystery box scifi. Asimov was not a great writer of characters, his work was pretty much only worth it for the ideas, so if you want to do a show out of Foundation you have a lot of work to do to elevate it into something that will work for modern audiences. Feels to me like the showrunners did have one great idea to elevate it with Lee Pace's character but otherwise fell back on the tropes of 2000s mystery box TV.

Suzanne Whyte

I’m a huge sci-fi fan and I have friends who loved the Foundation books so I was excited to watch it when the show came out but I didn’t make it to the end of the first season. I could see the potential of it but the show didn’t live up to the potential in my opinion.

Without providing any plot details, the game is mainly about teams of 5 people playing against each other (so 10 total) in matches lasting 30-45 minutes usually. So you are not playing out a 'plot' like in a single player game, or even quest lines like in an MMO, it's just player against player matches, no real plot required. Which means they wanted to give players lots of character options to pick as their character for each match. Every year they release more characters to keep building the "menu" of available choices. So the game design required having a lot of colorful and distinct characters with different strengths/weaknesses, and with all different kinds of backgrounds. The lore and worldbuilding they put into giving these characters backgrounds is what created the "world" of Runeterra with specific locations like Piltover that were detailed enough and popular enough they could do a show like this, and whith so many characters there's so many possible stories. Several characters in this show are very popular ones, but there is no character or group of characters that are the "main characters" of the game. Players pick whoever they like each match. Meaning there are over a hundred characters who could be "main characters" or important characters in an ensemble in a show. They don't have to just follow a few characters like Last of Us, as another game adaptation example. To also add on to another comment/question earlier up, this is why "Arcane" specifically is not the end. It may only have 2 seasons, but they have plans to explore many other locations and many other characters in the game, so there will definitely be more to come. But each area/character group story will have a different show title.

Right, there's a vertical element where you can keep doing down down and its gets worse and worse, but that portion of the city is also across the river from the hill, which gives natural elevation to the rich part of the city without them being directly over top. So I guess technically that makes it somewhat diagonal? They also mentioned being called "fissure folk" so there are fissures that the show (so far) has implied laborers worked in, all in the poor side of town. Really, its just Rich People live High Up and on the Good Side of the river, the Poors live on the Bad Side of the river where there's also a vertical depth that goes Down Below and the lower you get the worse it gets.

D Gyre

Yeah, its subtle, but her final words to Powder, I took the visuals shown as Vi breaking into Benzo's to be in a room there, so it wouldn't be at Vander's bar, and then the look on Vander's face when he realized what the toy means, just all piles up to show that Vi is giving herself up. It's the implication at least. I think everything is there for this, no spoilers.

Think of it as the proverbial shining city on the hill next to a sunken swamp fortress that's literally falling into the earth. The two cities are separated by the river and joined by the bridges, but one is very much still the upper city (both literally and metaphorically), and the other is the lower.
