In 2012 it was discovered by going through records that Loretta Lynn was actually almost 16 when she married. In reality marrying under 15 is illegal in Kentucky.

For some reason Doolittle Lynn wanted to have nothing to do with Tommy Lee Jones. That changed before filming started when Jones rented a jeep got dunk on moonshine and went tearing the through town only to get arrested for drunk driving and beat up for resisting arrest and jailed. Doolittle liked him immediately after that.

If you’ve never seen it check out Walk Hard The Dewey Cox Story. It’s hilarious and does for the biopic what Airplane and Blazing Saddles did for disaster movies and westerns.

Sissy Spacek is such a great actress. This movie seems insane to us now with the under 18 marriages but it was definitely a thing. Look at Elvis & Jerry Lee Lewis & some of my own ancestors even lol. At least my parents met in Officer & A Gentlemen style not Great Balls of Fire style lmao. P. S. Bologna makes Loretta horny ha ha

This movie holds a big sentimental piece of my heart because it is the first movie I can remember watching. I was 4 & saw it at the drive-in with my parents. I still have a 45 record of "Coal Miner's Daughter" with "I'm a Honkey Tonk Girl" as the B side & it says "Featuring Sissy Spacek" so I have always assumed that it is her singing (& not Loretta). Loretta Lynn died in 2022 at the age of 90. I don't think she stopped touring until 2017 when she was in her mid-eighties.

I agree about the complexity of the characters. I don't know if the movie was too generous to Doolittle but, I think it did a good job of showing him as a full character. He's not perfect but he's not a cartoon villain, either. Sissy Spacek was amazing in this. Loretta Lynn died in 2022 at 90.

That is definitely less alarming than 13 to me (still not great, but you know, time and place).

For sure this looks nuts now, but definitely not insane in 1940's Appalachia.

I love that Doolittle, while clearly not great, had genuinely warm moments to make him feel like a real person. Great performance not just by Spacek, but by Jones, too.

Both Sissy Spacek and Beverly D'Angelo did their own singing in this, which I always thought was pretty great.

I was absolutely blown away by Spacek, and her singing was tremendous. Not enough people talk about this movie when discussing all-time great performances by an actress (or actor).

New subscriber here. Love your commentaries! 😊🎬.. I was in my 20's when this movie was released. Loretta and Doolittle's stories were so unique I wished the movie could have gone on another hour.. Sissy Spacek deserved her Oscar win for sure. I wasn't familiar with Loretta Lynn's music but became a fan after seeing the movie and reading the book.. I like Sissy Spacek's voice even more than Loretta Lynn's. Thanks for commenting on this classic! 😊🎬

Thanks for watching! This performance never gets mentioned when people discuss all-time great performances by an actress (probably because of when it was made), but they should. This was a tour de force.

You will have to watch The Glenn Miller Story, Sweet Dreams (Patsy Cline) and La Bamba now...other great bio pics

So happy you did this one even though it wasn’t a poll winner. This is one of my favorite “lazy Sunday “ movies, just curl up with some good music and performances

This is an all-time great performance. People don't talk about it enough!

It's great to see such talented actors play off each other, even in a rocky relationship like this one.

Prime Cut, Badlands, Carrie, 3 Women, this. Man that's an impressive run.
