This episode is so damned funny. I love season four so much.

jimmy2k4o .

ohhh next week guys!!!! its gonna be a good 'un

JC

Anthony Stewart Head was so good in this. That few seconds where he was dealing with being blind & bewildered by Spuffy but then genuinely touched at being asked to give her away was a masterclass in facial acting.

Leah W.

I always end up cackling throughout this entire episode lol. Spike and Buffy are too funny

I love this episode and the comedy so so so much. But again I am a bit disappointed in the gang this episode. Willow absolutely messes up in this episode and makes a very unhealthy decision by using magic to cope… that being said she literally only does it because none of her friends are giving her much support. From the outset of the episode they are ragging on her to “just get over it” when she was literally just cheated on, and none of them offer support for more than a couple minutes before criticizing her again. Yes it’s mostly played for laughs to get to the crux of the episode but it’s still very hypocritical of them. Buffy broke up with Angel multiple times and each time she was a wreck for months, in fact she is arguably still not over him and she has the audacity to tell Willow to get over her first love cheating on her after less than 2 weeks? Xander cursed the entire town to fall in love with him over his break up with Cordelia so he doesn’t have the right to judge her for needing time either. Neither he nor Buffy have the right to tell Willow to just get over it, and both should have been more supportive instead of judgmental. I feel like it’s their actions that gave Willow no real choice but to seek comfort in the only thing she had left: magic.

Don't worry. The big bad is coming.

JC

Oh Hush, let them decide on their own ;)

I love this episode. It's so much fun. Spike is such a great character but what you said at the end is so true. We KNOW these characters now, warts and all. One of the fantastic things about this show is every single character is flawed in some way, even Buffy. They have their foibles and it makes it so much fun to play around with that in wacky ways. Next week is one of the stand out episodes of the ENTIRE show, I can't wait for your reactions. And just as an extra: Your Buffy journey ranks as probably my favourite of every reactor I have seen watch this show. You enjoy it for all the same reasons I do.

Kimba

This was such a funny episode it’s one of my favorites.

Carl Wilson

These are still very young people and they've all been through more than their share of traumas - I don't think it's surprising they don't have consistent emotional perspective. (Plus if they did, nothing interesting would happen!)

Miah

I've always been curious how Elizabeth Ann Allen's (Amy) agent pitched this to her. Like "good news, the Buffy show wants you back. However, you'll only be on screen for three seconds, you'll have no lines, and you'll have to be naked".

Carl Wilson

Great episode. Not just for the comedy (but yes) but also just character dynamics. One thing we can see, for instance, is that Willow still doesn't know her own strength magic-wise, or how to control it.

Lola Lirola

Oh, we're in such an amazing run of episodes right now!! Spike and Buffy's sudden engagement is the most hilarious. "It's just so sudden!" 🤣 And the jealousy over Angel and Drusilla! So fun. And the opening "I really associate passion with pain and suffering" **quickly stake a huge demon** "I wonder why that is?" And the Amy 2-second transformation is one of the best callbacks in the history of television, to my mind. Four years in the making! You're right that the show is now a lot more of a character hangout, and I love that. One of the things I really like about the show is that the central metaphor "highschool/college is hell" is always kept central. And so, all the lore and all the worldbuilding is done to support a metaphoric reading, and not so much an encyclopedic one, if that makes sense. I admit I get irritated by excess lore in the Star Wars/Marvel fashion, where even the cutlery has some sort of intricate backstory to remember, but I love that here it's all idea-based. Like when Willow is called to be a vengeance demon, it makes emotional sense, much more than lore sense, you know what I mean? Anyway, I love this show so much, and we're in such a great part of it, and rewatching it here with everybody is a genuine blast!

FYI- This episode connects with an episode of Angel, that’s why she comments on seeing Angel for 5 minutes.

Lola Lirola

Yes!! They really get it!

Zyrenicus

Yep. I knew for sure when they got every single nuance the writers were doing in The Zeppo. The way the writers were poking fun at their own formula (the overwrought Buffy/Angel scene with OTT dramatics, etc), they picked up on what the show was doing immediately and how they had flipped the usual A/B format.

James Roberts

I appreciate you throwing Anya some props. She's lived in the demon world over 1000 years and is a wealth of demon knowledge. Very helpful to the group.

Erica

Okay, so idk if this makes any sense, or if it's just something that comes with having watched the show a million times, but buffy's hair is often a signifier of her being not quite buffy. There's the obvious instances of her having brown hair in halloween, or unwashed hair in beer bad, but during the spell in this episode, her hair has the great wavy style to it. Less of a hard and fast rule, and more a fun thing to keep track of

Sarah P

I think you guys called out an actual little continuity error — how Buffy’s hair goes back and forth, from wavy to straight, a few times. In case no one’s mentioned it, all of the wavy hair scenes were on campus, so they definitely did SMG’s hair like that for that location’s day.

Erica

Oh, also, ive always felt like the group unfairly had no patience for willow mourning her first love. They tolerated buffy's sadness about parker, who was much less of an important person to her. They're simultaneously saying it takes time to move on but seem to refuse to let her take the time needed. Ive always been disappointed in the grouo for that

dys

James Marsters has had surprisingly few other major roles. He was in that godawful Dragonball movie after this. More recently he was in the TV adaptation of the Marvel series Runaways, I really liked those comics as a teenager (and Joss Whedon wrote an arc in the comics), but the show was a disappointment for me.

Christopher simeon

The Amy gag is the best part of this episode for me. Funny but also shows that Willow self doubt is holding her back magically.

Pam Nail

- I feel pretty comfortable saying this is the funniest episode of the season. - The three-second Amy gag is so amazing, and I love that they give us a shot of her in the cage earlier in the episode, in case anyone forgot about her. - Spike watching Passions and screaming about Timmy down the bloody well is maybe my favorite thing in the episode. - Love seeing Anya be useful to the group. Giles has always been a believable source of knowledge about the demon world, but having someone who was an actual demon for more than a thousand years is pretty handy.

Pam Nail

Same. I know she lashes out a bit unfairly, but I always lean more toward Willow's side -- until she does the spell, that is. Everyone wants her to deal with her pain, as long as they don't have to hear about it.

Erica

I love how many actors on this show are down to reprise their roles for the shortest jokes sometimes. I mean, sure, it's likely for the paycheck, but it's still fun to see

James B.

"Three excellent questions" is one of my favorite jokes and deliveries of the series.

Paul Komoroski

Re: funniest this season, I'd actually go further and say (for me) this is the funniest episode of the whole show. Though Band Candy is right up there. There's a third one in that group as well but Joe and Kevin haven't seen it yet.

James B.

Bringing Amy back for that 3-second scene was genius. I've always respected the actor for being game to do it.

Neill Shaughness

The only other role I remember Marsters in was Braniac in Smallville

Kirsten Stewart

A sassy cat might be the best description of captive Spike 😂 I love this episode, so many funny moments, they really let the cast stretch their comedic muscles. The Amy gag, as many have noted, pure genius!!

Michelle

James Marsters has a band, Ghost of the Robot, if I recall correctly. He was also in Torchwood. Besides Buffy though, I think he's most well known for being the narrator of Jim Butcher's Dresden books, and he is fantastic at it. For fans of the series, he is the voice of Harry Dresden.

Jamie Morgan

This is such a stacked episode that I always forget that it also has the 3-second Amy cameo! What a ridiculous amount of effort to go to for a brief gag, I LOVE IT! I also love how Marc Blucas plays Riley's confusion in the scene by the wedding dress shop. He has no idea where to look or put his hands, and he walks off so awkwardly, it's really endearing. 10/10 episode, no notes!

CobbleAUS

One of the funniest eps of the whole series. Also, an intro to D’Hoffryn, my favourite little side demon 😂 “Oh well, if you change your mind, give us a chant.”

Erica

If you're like me and are always looking for more buffy content to consume, the normies on youtube are another great channel! Their buffy reactions are so fun

Tina

As far as I know, he is very much a theater actor first, and takes a TV paycheck second. He talks about it at length on podcasts like Buffering the Vampire Slayer (spoilers for all of Buffy) and Michael Rosenbaum's one.

Youtalkingtome

Anya has really grown on me. I hope she becomes Cordy's replacement

Neill Shaughness

He was great. Of course it's always a trip hearing his real accent

Gail Hislop

Anya is here to stay to the very end. She became one of my favourite characters 🥰and fun side note start watching for all her different hairstyles and colours and lengths throughout the rest of the series - it became a kind of running inside joke

Lola Lirola

Yep. I somehow watched a couple of tv movies where he is the lead: one where he's a jewel heist thief, and another where he plays astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Surprisingly, he falls short as a lead. I think because he has to be more restrained, and the joy of James Masters is watching him play off of crazyness, and try to top it. On Buffy, they use this quality excellently: with Drusilla, he meets her crazy and goes further in devoted admiration; with Harmony, he meets her other flavor of craziness, and goes way beyond in horny toxicity! And in this episode, he feels the crazy, and goes all the way to planning a wedding! He is so good at no holds barred, and that's better as a supporting act than a lead.

Jontor11

We saw D'Hoffryn first time in season 3x16 when Anya begged to get her powers back. D'Hoffryn refused and Anya went to Willow instead...which resulted in summoning Vampire WIllow to this realm.
