I just realized Dave is basically a modern version of The Prisoner of Zenda. If you haven't seen it check out the 1937 version starring Ronald Coleman and Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

Cristy

Thank you, Seth! I am SO excited to watch this one with the guys.

D Gyre

Yes let's gooooo!!!!!!

Paul T Hewes

this is a great, sweet, big hearted movie. Love Kevin and Sigourney and Ben Kingsley... -One of the rare films were Laura Linney and Bonnie Hunt are in the same movie...

This movie came out the year that Bill Clinton first took office. As I recall he was also a big fan of Dave. Another great comedy along these lines is Dick (1999), a parody of Watergate starring Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams as a pair of 1970's airheaded teens who stumble their way into being Deep Throat. Also stars Will Ferrell and Bruce McCulloch as Woodward and Bernstein.

Never saw this- given the content it seems bipartisan...the sex scandal stuff sound very Bill Clinton, despite the 1993 release date, since his "alleged" infidelities WERE campaign issues in 1992...on the other hand the Savings and Loan crisis stuff happened under HW Bush in the late 1980s-1991 where small local banks made dangerous mortgages that bankrupted them and taxpayers had to bail them out (yes the 2007/2008 financial crisis was another "history rhymes rather than repeats"- in 2008 instead of having individual loans go bad as in the 80s/90s they bundled them together to hide the bad loans among the good ones and packaged them in the 2000s) I remember being a pissed off 25 year old in 1991 since a lot of banks were holding public auctions where you could buy a house that was foreclosed and vacant for half price but you had to come in with all cash to buy the properties- being just out of college I of course didn't have a $100K cashier's check to walk in and snap up a house. So rich yuppies in their 30s (and Wall St firms) went in and bought up dozens of properties that they could "flip" or rent and become slumlords. Now its Private Equity buying up whole neighborhoods and renting them out- so nothing has really changed...

You really should finish watching Midnight Run. It's great!

Jonathan Eaton

I love how they had Helen Thomas in this. She was the reporter that always sat front row center and was there from JFK to Obama.

Jonathan

This was a favorite movie of mine as a kid. I always think of that budget cabinet meeting whenever the federal budget is brought up.

Roland

Just add Midnight Run to your list. It's that good. 🙂

Jonathan

I totally agree current events will make a great movie eventually. For an example of too soon. The Jeff Daniels Jim Comey movie that came out right after it happened.

Actuarial Lurker

at 34:52 was that a prediction of Project 2025 where Congress and The Judiciary report to the President instead of being co-equal branches of government? And a "First Lady" who spends as much time with the "President" as the current "First Family"

Roland

Frank Langella is such an amazing actor that he can chew the scenery without uttering a word. 🤩

Actuarial Lurker

Kevin- the FY2026 defense budget proposal was a hike to $1 Trillion, so $650Million would be less than 1/1000th of that....

Actuarial Lurker

I saw him on Broadway in 1977 at age 11 with my parents when he starred in Dracula.... he stole the show....

Roland

Thanks Seth, this movie never fails to make me happy and (allegedly) manly-teary. 🙂

Actuarial Lurker

Kevin- the multi-year damage that will be done to the WORLD economy from the Hormuz oil crisis and to NATO will make any film about the Orange Clown "too soon"...this second term will still be causing damage in 2050 from the delays to addressing climate change....

I’m pretty sure this current fascist regime has used body doubles for both Melanie and Dementia Don, especially when he’s had his stroke/heart attack episodes but they wanted to look like he was still up and about (when they kept the press at a long distance from him). I know a lot of people that wonder if they’ll try to pull a Dave/Weekend at Bernie’s whenever he does actually kick the bucket.

Youtalkingtome

I think as he gets sicker, we will see him less and less, which means it’s possible.

Cristy

“The anti-Leo” lol, Kevin. Frank Langella always plays a great bad guy for sure. He’s so imposing.

Jenna Woginrich

Genuinely one of my favorite movies! What a piece of medicine in these political times!

Allison O

Okay now you guys really need to see My Fellow Americans at some point! Yes Clinton had just taken office, but a lot of the scandal and notoriety and whatnot really did start during the campaign. But I also suspect there’s a bit of a Reagan hangover especially in terms of the suspicion of aides running the show if the president is incapacitated.

Pam Nail

I've always loved this movie. I saw it the night of my senior prom. My date and I went to a midnight showing after dinner in our fancy duds.

Actuarial Lurker

except in real life they are trying to figure out how to expand the military budget and cut social benefit programs

"Hail to the chief, he's the one we all say hail to! We all say hail 'cause he keeps himself so clean!" is an earworm I think of way too often, hahah... I've watched this far too often as a balm for depressing politics in real life.

Seth Walker

So glad you guys enjoyed it! Another childhood favorite. Yes it's a little naive and Frank Capra-ish but sometimes thats what we need to escape the bitter reality we live in. Screw Trump. Dave Kovack 2028!

Jenna Woginrich

I am so happy Joe loved it that much! It's such a balm.

Jenna Woginrich

Trump doesn't deserve a replacement half as good as Dave.

Kristi Govertsen

I too think a lot about what this time period will look like thirty years from now (I mean, we are living in the absurdist timeline in the multiverse). I think a great model that captures this level of “the dangers posed by a clown-car full of unethical clowns” is White House Plumbers. It’s a limited series (Netflix?), that portrays the stupidly bonkers, yet real-life, events carried out by a stupidly bonkers, yet real-life, cast of characters that were involved in the Watergate scandal. It is equal parts face-palming laughter🤦🏼‍♀️ and horrifically-stunned clutching of the pearls😱.

James B.

I highly recommend Soapdish...if you continue with Klein's oeuvre

Actuarial Lurker

Jenna- America doesn't deserve a 25th A that gives us Vance. I hope Trump persists in a diminished capacity as President through Jan 2029 so he drags down the GOP for 2.75 more years. That will get Dems the Presidency, more than 260 House seats and 55+ Senate seats in 2029. A Vance "reboot" will allow them to pretend all is better....

Actuarial Lurker

Hitler gave us Schindler's List...what will Trump give us "Sharter's List"?

Roland

The Oliver Stone cameo is a thing of beauty. :D

Willow Dalton

If you want more presidential films please do Dick at some point. It’s the best watergate movie… veep but Nixon. I love it.

Youtalkingtome

It was wonderful! Certainly a direct play on the criticisms of his JFK film, right?

Youtalkingtome

Why didn't I think of a movie after senior prom?? Oh, right: my date bailed on my after the dance for a party I didn't want to go to. Thanks a lot, Becky!!

Youtalkingtome

He was able to be hilarious in this movie while also being genuinely menacing. What a performance!

Youtalkingtome

It really is. I am definitely gunna be picking up this DVD

Tim Miller

Glad you guys enjoyed this one, I grew up watching this movie and still love it. You should check out Primary Colors too if you haven't seen it. Less funny and far less optimistic than Dave but another underrated political movie. John Travolta plays a fictionalized version of Bill Clinton.

Roland

For sure. 😀

danzthename

This is such a heartwarming movie, and Kevin and Sigourney are adorable together. I love it, but it does hit different these days. I want to believe we could have a president like this some day.

Ryan Fisher

Wonderful reaction guys. For those interested, Audible has a radio play performed to a live audience by and co-starring Billy Crystal that includes Kevin Klein as the President and Annette Benning as First Lady. It’s wonderful and checks your Dave/My Fellow American boxes.

Ryan Fisher

The name might be useful. It’s called Have a Nice Day.
