What an incredible show.

Neil Writes Things

Unfortunately, stepping through the door is basically the same as suicide for innie Mark. I don't think I could do it either.

Youtalkingtome

Kevin here. I agree. Going through the door was probably the morally correct thing to do, but you are asking a guy to willingly die. It would be tough.

Leah W.

Some thoughts: We've seen moments of it before, but sometimes Mark is a selfish prick. I really adore that we see that in crystal detail during the camera conversation. I like him as a character but sometimes he is rude and dismissive of others. I had a different interpretation to the Cold Harbor room than you did. I don't think it was mind control they tried to achieve but a perfect blank slate. They put her in the most traumatic moment of her life. She was wearing the outfit she "died" in and asked to dismantle a baby crib. She wasn't able to dismantle the crib after the miscarriage - Mark did it. However, Gemma had no emotional response at all beyond apprehension at the strange situation. If it was mind control, I don't think that creepy guy would have tried to convince her the way he did when he spoke to her. He would've just told her. I also felt similar to you two during the ending. I was in shock. Sick to my stomach. I get why he did it, but WHY MARK. What a great season 2.

Erin

The ending of this episode is controversial to say the least 😅 Personally I understood why innie Mark chose to stay. He wasn’t staying just for Helly, but she was the final nail in the coffin, so to speak. Innie Mark knew his existence was over the second he stepped through that door. Outie Mark was always going to back out of his ‘promise’ and innie Mark knew this. He was being impulsive and thinking in the moment to stay behind and if you notice, there are notes to The Graduate in that ending with him running through the hallways with Helly. Neither of them know what’s next. They just wanted a little more time with each other, as Helly said earlier in MDR. As far as Gemma is concerned, Mark got her out and personally I think there was a plan b in case innie Mark decided to stay behind. I am thinking Devon or Cobel is upstairs waiting for her. I typically agree with you guys in your reactions, so I am surprised to see you react opposite to how I would…in any case..a bit of trivia…Adam actually got a concussion during the fight with ‘Drummond’ when he throws him against the wall. Ben Stiller liked it so he kept it in 😅

Some free association: The Chicago Bulls them is the song "Sirius" by Alan Parsons which intros into Eye in the Sky. Alan Parsons was the engineer at Abbey Road Studios where they recorded Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and the "outro" of "Great Gig In the Sky" has a roadie's spoken word recording in the background: "And I am not frightened of dying Any time will do, I don't mind Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime If you can hear this whispering you are dying" add that to the cover of the Abbey Road album in 1969 perpetuating the "Paul is Dead" meme Was this part of the song choice?

Ryan Fisher

The thing that got to me at the beginning was Innie Mark was condescended to by Outie Mark, “oh you have a little girlfriend…” and gets her name wrong, and I need you to do me a solid and die. He still nearly got murdered rescuing Gemma, got her out of the building, and went back for an uncertain future where Innie Mark could get turned off in minutes, but they have life until then.

ScarlettMi

The thing that pushed Outie Mark into pushing forward with reintegration was that moment of condescension and dismissal from Helena Egan in the restaurant when she got Gemma's name wrong. And then Outie Mark echoed that when he couldn't be bothered to get Helly's name right either. It shows how little he cared about Innie Mark and how he was never going to prioritize any of the Innies. After that, there was no way Innie Mark could have trusted Outie Mark to do anything he said he'd do.

Ryan Fisher

I had forgotten that - great point!

ScarlettMi

Yeah, I don't get the sense that it was "mind control" in the way that they're describing. I'm assuming it was more of a complete emptying of personality that would leave the body empty for some rich old asshole to take over so they can "live forever". Clearly it failed though because love broke through.

Erin

Also wanted to add in a separate post that I’ve been watching you guys since The Americans and really value your opinions because you both seem to view what you are watching from all sides. Even though your immediate reaction was annoyance at innie Mark, you could see why he did what he did. Most other reactions I’ve watched are always so against what the innie’s want…they are people too! Also wanted to add that Adam Scott has said multiple times that there was no way his innie was going to go through that door with (essentially) a stranger. His life was in Lumon, with Helly and Dylan. No matter how small that life is, it’s still his life and it’s all he knows.

Actuarial Lurker

Marc S isn't Jesus...it shows how difficult the choice in Garden of Gethsemane was to go through with The Crucifixion...would you die willingly if you thought a new reintegrated portion of yourself would emerge (The Trinity) and that your Death would save many (those yet to be born- severed)

Actuarial Lurker

I agree that have wiped her mind to be occupied by "uploaded" Eagen's like in Get Out. See my Rot13 prediction from a few weeks back

Actuarial Lurker

Don't forget that Marc S is still Mark Scout who is mid-reintegration. Whose to say that in Season 3 he won't have a spell where he becomes his outie and just runs out the door....if they don't kill him first

Actuarial Lurker

Kevin- do you think innie Marc S would value "the entire world" if his only experience was the outdoor excursion where he slept with what he thought was innie Helena?

Benjamin Finkel

A query going into Season 3 - Is Mark S in there with Helly, or Helena? "But I'm her, Mark. I'm her."

Benjamin Finkel

All of Gemma's rooms were tests of the "barrier" between Gemma and the new Innies they created. There are many callbacks this season to her pre-Lumen life like the clothes and the crib. The song. Writing thank you notes. All stuff referenced in flashbacks.

This is such a fantastic finale! The marching band was such a wild, over-the-top choice - I loved it. And yeah, where did they get a band? Why do they have a band? Where do they rehearse? It’s an insane, hilarious choice. Ok, so, the ending… Are you familiar with the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice? Real quick - Orpheus, a musician, descends into the Underworld to rescue his beloved, Eurydice. There, he plays so well that Hades agrees to let her go. She is allowed to follow him out of the Underworld…as long as Orpheus doesn’t look back. But of course he does. And she’s lost. I’m not sure what the next step is, but I feel like that much of a nod to the myth must have been intentional. Also - Did you notice the color of Helly’s sweater? Throughout the show, she’s only ever worn blue and beige. At the end here, she wore a soft green sweater. I’m not entirely sure what it means (I could wax poetic, but I’ll spare you), but again, surely that was an intentional choice. Goodness, do we really have another year to wait? Well, plenty of time to think it over i guess ;)

> The marching band in the Severance season 2 finale features performers affiliated with the Bushwackers alumni and Brooklyn United, featuring a style heavily inspired by HBCU marching bands (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). The scene was created to honor the Sonic Boom of the South and was led by actor Tramell Tillman (Mr. Milchick), who is a Jackson State University alumnus. Band Performers: The ensemble included Bushwackers drum corps alumni (such as Dan Piro and Ember Hesse) and members from Brooklyn United. Style and Inspiration: The performance was a tribute to HBCU bands, particularly Jackson State University's "Sonic Boom of the South," featuring HBCU-style choreography and drum major antics led by Tramell Tillman. Scene Context: The marching band, part of the "Choreography and Merriment" department, was directed by Ben Stiller to perform a routine inspired by the film Drumline. Music: The track featured in the finale is credited to Brooklyn United and composer Theodore Shapiro. <

When (not if) you rewatch the whole show ahead of S3: 1) catch the behind the scenes extras after the credits of each episode, some amazing breakdowns of the technical creativity that has gone into this show. 2) listen to each episode of the official podcast (hosted by Ben Stiller and Adam Scott), every episode of the podcast is brilliant, linked to each episode of the show.

Roland

I wonder why Irving featured in the ORTBO painting...?

Roland

I'm pretty sure Dr Maurer's "You'll kill them all!" refers to the twenty-five innies of Gemma Scout (excluding Ms. Casey)....

Michael Bennett

Yeah, I enjoyed watching them go straight from "ugh, I hate this" to "this was a great ending". Because I think we are kinda meant to hate it, but understanding it requires a bit more.

Michael Bennett

As usual, I remember these finales being good, and they're even better upon rewatching them. Using Drummond's blood to access Cold Harbor was a piece of writing brilliance. Even having a bolt gun be the thing that did him in made it so much more visceral. They built the suspense, making us think oh no, Drummond is going to gain the upper hand when Mark switches personalities and doesn't know what's happening, and then BOOM. I really loved Dylan's letter to himself, and the through line with Mark talking to himself was really cool. It's a satisfying end to Dylan's arc for this season while giving him space to grow in future seasons. And it's perfectly written for his voice, "fuck you" / "I get it". I hope Irving still has a role to play. The MDR team needs his superpower. The ending is obviously gut wrenching for Gemma, but I know Devon will be there for her as she has been for Mark. God I hope Ricken can manage to pull his head out when he sees that she's still alive. The biggest mystery for me right now is what's in store for Milchick? He's had quite an arc this season, and although he didn't have much success managing the severed floor, you can't really say it was his fault. I think he could be a force to be reckoned with if he decides he's had enough of Lumon.

Kimba

I really hope they spend a good amount of time next season exploring the severed floor, including mysteries still to unfold from Petey’s map. They already have an innie army now with an entire marching band on their side. Also I don’t think there are easy access to controls for Lumon to just turn them off. I think Mark S needed to stay there to spend more time with Helly, even if he knows his life will be short, having more time is such a blessing. And he did the right thing for Gemma at great expense to himself.

Anjali Agarwal

It's been confirmed by the creators and actors that it's Helly.

Anjali Agarwal

I hope you both enjoyed this season as much as I did :) I totally understand why innie Mark would stay. He doesn't know Gemma - she is a stranger to him. He's in love with Helly and would do anything to be with her. Plus, him leaving would end their lives. I give innie Mark MAJOR props for helping Gemma escape. He could have let her rot down there but he has a conscience and wanted to do right by her. He did what he promised - he saved her. But that's all he owed her. Re: Gemma, yes, it's kind of like mind control except the person is supposed to feel no pain. Gemma experienced a lot of trauma and pain with the miscarriage so they wanted to see if taking apart a crib (which is what Mark did in Ep7 because it was too painful for Gemma to do) would trigger something in her or not. You guys should listen to the official podcast with Ben Stiller and Adam Scott for S2. Great listen and lots of cool BTS tidbits with guest stars. IMO Adam Scott deserved an Emmy for this season - especially the finale! SO stoked for Season 3!

Roland

That's a great catch!

Daniel Andersen

I just can't see the show having a happy end

Ari

That makes the most sense, but I also wondered if he was referring to all of Gemma's personalities. Maybe he was hoping to save her somehow since he did seem to have a weird obsession with her.

Roland

I think we're saying the same thing? (TLDR: yes!!)

Carl Wilson

Except that he's been told about reintegration, so it's not as simple as he just dies. Yes, he wasn't sure if he believed it, but I think it's more about Helly than about "dying."

Carl Wilson

I think you're a little off about what reintegration would mean. Of course the two sides can come back together - Mark would just remember all his experiences at Lumon, when he didn't before. It's only the lack of all his life memories that makes Mark S. (innie) have a distinct personality. They would just regain the continuity of their lives. Saying it's "killing" Mark S. is kind of like saying that medication "kills" a schizophrenic's delusional self, or someone with MPD's idea that they are inhabited by other personalities. It's only severance that created the sensation of two separate people. I certainly understand the innies' fear of being erased, and their collective hostility to the outies - but reintegration is the solution, and the only one. All that said, I'm confused and a bit frustrated at how little further progress Mark's reintegration made after his operation - extremely rare flashes, and that's it?

Carl Wilson

The problem with Gemma's escape (and I'm assuming she runs away after Mark leaves the door) is what control Lumon has on her on the outside - is there an Overtime Contingency for her? Presumably at least for the Miss Casey part of her.

Carl Wilson

I'd never thought of that parallel! Amazing.

Carl Wilson

The run through the halls is very romantic and also certifiably insane. WTF do they think they're running to? I'm not sure we can rely on the marching band to serve as a defending army against the rest of Lumon security once Milchick is able to call them. And even if they can hold out, what will they live on - how many waffles are leftover on the floor? Are they going to kill and eat the goats? A certain someone is going to stand in the way of that. I like that it's a very adolescent kind of romantic runaway fantasy, but I also worry that the show has just run and then jumped in dreamy slow motion over the shark.

Roland

I'm not on board with the [spoiler warning for the movie Get Out] theory that Cold Harbor is proof that the victim's memories can be erased to the point that they are now am empty vessel for a Get Out style hostile takeover by an aging Eagan. To my mind it empties the victim's memories enough that they can be re-programmed with true Keir values. After all, there are billions of Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists that can be saved from damnation....

Toc

Really liked the first season; really DIDN'T like the second season, other than the first couple of episodes and the 7th one. Way, way too many unanswered questions and loose ends going back to the very first episode of season 1. The character that got the most screen time was this boring cliche of a security head who looked like he'd stepped right out of a David Lynch movie. They killed Grainer for him? (and what about Grainer? No cops showed up? No one could put Mark on the scene? He had his key card! He threw up right at the crime scene! And then what about...........ah, I won't even bother! Very frustrating! I LOVE that you started this second season laughing about how long we had to wait!!!! And now we're waiting again! I saw Adam Scott promoting a new movie the other day; I'm like.....whaaaat?!!! Get back to work! Chop chop! :P

Toc

I don't think that's Helly R, I think that's Helena.

SirEdge

This turned Outie Mark into an antagonist for me. I feel terrible for Gemma, but also for Innie Mark and Helly.

Youtalkingtome

The more I think about it, the more I do like it. It's incredibly dark, sad, and insane. It feels like madness and on rewatch it was really affective giving yourself over to it

Youtalkingtome

I really do have my karma for laughing about how long you guys had to wait. This is gunna be a tough one

Youtalkingtome

Getting Gemma out was the right thing and I'm glad he was able to do that

Youtalkingtome

I was wondering if Milchick was reaching a breaking point. That must be something we save for Season 3

Youtalkingtome

I'm gunna be going down so many reddit rabbit holes it's not even funny

Ryan Fisher

Very organically. It felt real.

Just Lily

Regarding Grainer, Lumon knows he is dead. They showed Cobel getting the news. Lumon either cleaned up or they talked to some friendly cops to hush it all up. Either they know who did it or not doesn't change anything really

Toc

No offense, but that's the silliest, flimsiest thing I've ever heard. I don't even know what you're talking about. Why would they want it hushed up? Are you saying all of society is indifferent to a murder? Are you saying they didn't put two and two together that somehow they got Grainer's key card? And I just listed that one thing. There are TEN THOUSAND dopey loose ends. It's totally sloppy. Stiller - who is from the MOVIES - obviously lost interest. He didn't direct much in the second season, and he's not going to be directing at all in the third season. The scripts for this idiotic second season were beyond sloppy; this did not have to be a ten-episode season. Way too much fat. I'm not going to itemize the ten thousand loose ends and plot holes, et al. Where's RIcken and his weird friends? Why are they so weird? Was it just a tonal choice? What happened to the politics? The senator and his pregnant wife? What happened to the kids protesting Severance? Instead.....the leaned into the lamest (and easiest to write) part of Severance: the pseudo-religious aspect of it. Way too many cooks now (two show runners that hate each other).....it was just a huge letdown after years of waiting. I don't know if you've written anything in your life, but I have and I think Season 2 is really lame. I'm allowed!
