That ridiculous Stars Hollow Hippie Ren Faire Wedding is one of my absolute favorite parts of the series, and the dance with Luke and Lorelei rates along such peak romcom cinematic scenes as the Leaning scene in "While You Were Sleeping" or the over the garden wall scene between Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant in "Nottingham Hill." Buzzy! (Plus yes, v. proud of Luke and Jess!)

Ari

I love this whole episode, but esp. Luke and Lorelai dancing, and Jess and Luke's conversation at the end. Jess still has some growing up to do (as we see in his last scene with Rory), but I feel like he's on his way now, on a good path. He's finally grown to appreciate Luke and he's said so, and that takes a lot for someone like him.

This isn't connected with this episode, but on a personal note, I'm traveling in New England right now and spent yesterday in Hartford, Connecticut. I think there are a couple of other patrons who live in this area, but for me, I was geekily excited to drive around the Prospect Ave. area of Hartford, where Richard and Emily would probably live. The palatial and historical homes there are amazing, but they did lead me to wonder about all the Gilmorish drama and comedy going on behind their closed doors.

This is an absolutely perfect iconic episode of the show and everything is so great except for Liz’s medieval Maid Marian style dress that is the completely wrong period, in this essay I will

Youtalkingtome

You just know they are living it up in Greenwich right now.

Youtalkingtome

The closeness and respect between Luke and Jess was absolutely my favorite part of this episode!

Rory’s bad blind date was them doing a favor. That guy had been cast in the pilot for Veronica Mars (great show) and the network complained that he had no acting credits and wasn’t believable as a rich kid so the Veronica mars creator called some friends and now the guy could say he was on Gilmore Girlswhile doing press interviews. Originally Rory’s car broke down in the script.

I do think it's worth pointing out that A) Luke has been just as jealous of the men that Lorelai's dated as Lorelai has been of the women that Luke's dated and B) Luke has just as much of a history of blowing up relationships and having one foot out the door as Lorelai does. I just don't think it's fair to frame this as a situation where one person is flighty and bad at relationships and one person is solid and has a good track record, because that's just not what we've seen up to that point. I mean Luke agreed to move in with Nicole and then simply did not move in with her. And the entire time he was seeing Nicole he was flirting with Lorelai.

I'm so glad you guys still remember Alex. Billy Burke is one of my favorite actors and he's always guest starring as the one who got away (Fringe S01E07). He's like David Boreanaz and is constantly working. I highly recommend his 2014 TV show Revolution. It was weird and only lasted two seasons but it was... Interesting...

Carl Wilson

I don't think Luke and Lorelai ever entirely recognized what they were doing as flirting - I think they just each thought of the other as part of the local cast of characters for a long time, albeit the most likeable and mostly-sane of the cast, and so even as they got closer and closer they were each kind of in denial.

Carl Wilson

Turning a close friendship into a relationship is a really risky and scary thing to do. It's not just that you risk losing the friend - it's also that it's kind of 0 to 60 in one step. There's no cute get-to-know-you period - it has to be a serious thing, right away, and are you ready for that? In the words of Liz Phair, "It's harder to be friends than lovers/ And you shouldn't try to mix the two/ 'Cause if you do it and you're still unhappy/ Then you know that the problem is you." That said, I support what Luke is doing a thousand percent.

Carl Wilson

It's really unfortunate that Jess can't approach that conversation with Rory with the calm and openness he brought to the talk with Luke. She probably would still say no, but it could have been healing for both of them instead of him pushing and her having to shut him down.

Yasemin

Luke & Jess - one of my favorite dynamics of the show.

Yasemin

It was only mentioned once, but T.J. is "Gary". :)

Yasemin

The dance....is everything. :)

The Lane and Mrs Kim thing has been so corrosive, glad to see both of them trying to repair that bridge. I always had a modicum of sympathy for Mrs Kim. It's one thing for your child give up a career in medicine to run a kebab shop*. It's quite another to have them reject the faith and associated Korean community that they were brought up in. That's a total rejection of her mother and her whole upbringing, plus the risk of spiritual damnation and whatnot. It's no small deal. *Ted Lasso reference, you're welcome. 😉

Youtalkingtome

I'm here for it. Yeah it's super risky but I think what they have is real

Youtalkingtome

That's funny. Sounds like things really worked out for that guy

Dil

Luke has never been as smooth and suave as he was in this episode! And Lorelai just looked positively giddy!

Carl Wilson

lol - kind of, in that he had a few years on Veronica Mars (esp the two great first seasons) - but he was always the weakest cast member and after he left the show he quit acting

"Reflecting Light" by Sam Phillips was a beautiful song choice for Luke and Lorelai's first dance. I love it so much! I also really love the Luke/Jess moment! I have always thought it was interesting to see how each character reacted to going through the self-help book. Luke is grown and more mature so the process helped him in very immediately positive ways. It seems that Jess's actions afterward shows the immaturity he still has, since he is young. Luke's actions cause him to very smoothly take Lorelai to the wedding with a possible second (and more real) date. Jess decides to act rashly and demand that Rory move away with him. It's like the self-help book made him assume he understands everything about love now which is a natural way for someone immature to handle it.

I🖤Kraken

Thank you so much for reminding me about Reflecting Light. I can definitely use that beautiful song today. Slight spoiler, it's actually used twice in the show...🥰

I grew up about an hour's drive directly north of Hartford in Massachusetts so to me it's mostly been a place to pass through on my way to visit my MA hometown now that I live in New York, or to see shows at The Webster back when I lived in MA. So I've never really seen those ritzier parts of it. I still find it curious that they rag on all the urban decay of New Haven in relation to Rory going to Yale but never mention that Hartford has pretty much the same struggles, we only ever see the mansions and country club parts that Emily and Richard exist in.

Jeff

I was thinking the same thing! Hartford clearly has a wide variety of social classes, but the show would have you believe it's the equivalent of Newport or Palm Springs.

Zach Hershman

I wanted to like his character on Veronica Mars, but he's just not a very good actor. The network getting its way and getting someone else cast could have helped that show. I also wonder if his character would have stuck around.

Zach Hershman

I don't get the hate for Rory's blind date. I don't think he did anything wrong (outside of the dumb drunk driving stuff at the end). He asked Rory if she'd like to come hang out at a bar with him and a bunch of other guys. He didn't ask her out on a solo date. It just happens that the two of them aren't compatible. If he and his friends were into books instead of sports, she'd probably have had a good time.

AudeAudor

He completly left her on her own, disguarded her! And when he came back he said "I'll stay if it's suddenly getting interesting here!". 1. Getting drunk with strangers (all boys) for a girl: I don't know a lot of girls who would be comfortable. 2. "getting interesting" means "I hope she'll chill so maybe still get the chance to sleep wither her afterwards." And 3. he was considering get in a car with a drunk driver. So yes, he was doing a lot of things wrong.
