Tyler Explains It All

Fun fact: The convivence store clerk who says, "hey, didn't I see you on Cops?" is Annaleigh Ashford. She is a musical theater star who is from my hometown of Denver and was recently Mrs. Lovett, starring with Josh Groban as Sweeney in the 2023 revival of Sweeney Todd.

This got me just as much this time, if not more. My late wife came from a great, together family, while mine was more the Buchmans sans all the money. Hathaway and her sister fantastic. And Debra Winger so reminded me of my late mother, professional, not very emotionally available, obviously still scarred. Really surprised me. Bill Irwin is such a treasure. If you don't know about his entire career, it's pretty astounding. Started off in clown and circus work, is so physically gifted on stage. Virtuoso. To watch him in a one man clown show is truly something. Very Chaplinish, vaudevillian. Great in regular stage work, too. The older Irish musician with his crew is Robyn Hitchcock, had quite the pop career back in the day. And the rehab stuff, well, I won't go all Kym here, but it was very evocative for me this time. Thanks again. ☮️

Jonathan Demme lived another 9 years after this, but mainly worked in music videos and tv episodes. The last thing I saw of his was a limited series called Shots Fired that followed the aftermath of a police shooting in real time. It starred the actor who played Michael in the wire

absolutely ♥ this movie! Criminally under viewed! As I recall Anne's big scene in the group meeting was done in one take after she sat thru like 40 minutes of other people talking. Such great writing, acting & directing! A sublime albeit hard watch. IMO Hathaway deserved all the praise for this performance

Carl Wilson

Robyn Hitchcock - English, not Irish, and more of an indie career than a pop one. And still going! Catch him if he comes to your town, he gives an incredible live show - one of the funniest storytellers in the biz.

Carl Wilson

He made some TV episodes after this, yes, but he'd stopped making music videos some years before. He did make two more feature films, and a bunch of documentaries. Some of those were about music, but others weren't - and since Demme made several of what are seen as the best music docs/concert films ever, distinguishing them from just "music videos" is worth doing.

Heather Armantrout

I always imagine Emma would have been Rachel’s sounding board and safe friend when Kym took up all the family’s energy. It makes sense that she would resent Kym and feel protective of Rachel.

Brian Harris

Kym is right about Rachel dropping the pregnancy bomb. It was an incredibly subtle, covert undermining of Kym's position. She didn't want to address Kym's very legitimate and longstanding feelings of resentment, and she knew she had the ultimate escape hatch, and she used it. I acknowledge that Kym is awful, but she at least knows she's awful and is trying to get better. Rachel behaves all kinds of troubling ways in this movie, and she largely gets away with it. (I love this movie and have strong feelings about it.)

Dil

I could never get past the “Indian theme” wedding..such a bizarre choice that felt very performative and very ‘oh look at me I’m so eclectic’.

David Adler

Ack. Wasn't his band back then Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians?

David Adler

Okay, I bought this reel, might as well get a good story in. After my wife of three decades exited this life 2.5 years ago, I basically lived out the lyrics from the old bluegrass song: "If the ocean was whiskey and I was a duck, I'd dive to the bottom, Lord, and never come up." Went to rehab for 40 days, very Jesus-like, at a place in Northern California called "Serenity Knolls." Same place Jerry Garcia died. The End. ☮️💟

Youtalkingtome

That does make a lot of sense. I'm sure Rachel has vented to her a lot about Kym

Youtalkingtome

I would say this is underrated. More people should be talking about this film

Youtalkingtome

That sounds interesting. I would love to check that out

David Adler

And btw, Kym's tattoo of the rose reads "Ethan," if hard to see.
