Captain Redbeard Rum is played by "my" Doctor Who, Tom Baker. Although I am just old enough to have seen a bit of Jon Pertwee's Doctor. (He's the father of Sean Pertwee, whom you'll probably know from all sorts of stuff).

Patrick

Tom Baker is fantastic.

that girl

Miranda Richardson played the Queen of Hearts in an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.

Newt's mum was played by the actress that played Lady Farrow. I was just surprised to not have seen her in more stuff, I thought she was great in "Head". (Great double entendre indeed!)

Ciarán Carr

Don't think either of yous have watched Doctor Who, but Rum Redbeard was played by the 4th Doctor, Tom Baker! If you have seen him in anything, you'd recognise his voice anywhere

Mithroch

YAY! Tom Baker! I've been waiting for this episode.

Actuarial Lurker

Yes!....I watched the 1970s Tom Baker Dr. Who as a kid and lo and behold he shows up as Red Beard

Actuarial Lurker

They played the Tom Baker Dr. Who in the 1970s on NYC local TV so he was mine as well! The theme music to that is VERY reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "One of These Days" from the album Meddle

I’m not a big fan of Mr Bean, Rowan Atkinson has always been Blackadder to me. I prefer his talkative comedy to the slapstick, I suppose. I think in this season, and later ones, we really get to see how great his comedic timing is. His delivery of ‘So some kind of hat is probably in order?’ will never not crack me up. The way he delivers punchlines is just perfect.

I was actually more of a Pertwee fan... though his era was long past by the time I started watching. It was Davison's show then. Our local PBS didn't carry Dr. Who until the mid 80s, so I had to rely on VHS from the local library.

A lot of comments about Captain Rum being Tom Baker, but what about Simon Jones (The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy) as Sir Walter Raleigh!

Roland

Delightfully, the Wikipedia entry for this episode has a link not to Sir Walter Raleigh, but rather to Sir Walter "Oooh what a big ship I've got" Raleigh..... :D
