Neill Shaughness

What a brilliant episode. Every moment is cleverly written and skillfully directed. You can really see how they've hit their stride at this point. Can't wait to watch later tonight

Kirsten Stewart

I’ve never clicked on a video quicker! This is a masterclass in storytelling. It came about due to critics critiquing the show about how heavily it relies on witty dialogue. This was Joss Whedon’s response and is, quite rightly, heralded as one of the finest episodes of tv storytelling.

ScarlettMi

Imagine that being the big criticism… your dialog is too consistently witty. LOL

Neill Shaughness

Casting trivia: the lead Gentleman is played by the legendary Doug Jones, a once in a generation mask actor. Of you've seen Pan's Labyrinth he was both Pan and The Pale Man. He has tons of credits and often goes unremembered by most of the audience because he is so good at acting with masks and prosthetics on.

Lola Lirola

I've been refreshing the page all night waiting for this! Yayyy!

I🖤Kraken

Well, ya did it. You've reached the #1 BTVS episode of all time. Congratulations, boys! What are ya gonna do next?

Neil Writes Things

When Buffy does everything right, you get things like this. There are a few more in the next few seasons, but this is consistently a top 3 episode for most people. Certainly one of mine. Glad you enjoyed!

Danse Macabre, the piece that plays during the presentation about the Gentlemen, was also the theme music of the show Anthony Head left to make Buffy.

Leah W.

I love this episode! I really have to applaud the whole cast for such excellent acting. You can really tell what they are trying to say with no words.

aleidascope

Doug Jones is incredible, and he’s had a lot of work in the last 30-odd years. Almost everyone will have seen him in something without knowing it, and he seems lovely and humble to boot. Highly recommend checking out more of his stuff.

Daniel Lydford

An absolute legend of a TV episode that has inspired many shows after to film a show without dialogue.

Jontor11

Yes, as someone said. This episode is the answer to the critique that Buffy is all just dialogue but no real storytelling. The actress who plays the other witch, Tara, is Amber Benson.

Lola Lirola

Omg, I love Doug Jones! I didn't know that was him!

Jontor11

Yes, but no one does it just as good. Buffy was a first for a lot of stuff. Which will become clearer later on.

JC

I’ll admit that when I realized you were doing Only Murders I did the math to see if you’d get the two best “no dialogue” episodes around the same time.

Lola Lirola

One of the best episodes of the show! And one of the best villains of the show! How terrifying were they!?? How cool is it that all the characters have things they're finding difficult to talk about, and they only reach an understanding when they *can't* talk about it?? It's "show don't tell" at its best: Xander being able to show Anya how much she means to him even though he can't say the word "girlfriend" when she's trying to have "the talk". Willow only reaching bigger powers when she can't do verbal spells but finds a mystical connection with someone like her. Buffy and Riley finding out about each other in the coolest way possible... And the ending of the episode is "We need to talk". Genius. Just genius. I love that, if/when they're going to do a gimmick episode like this, they always, always, make sure it means something.

Lola Lirola

Oh, I think there's at least a couple contenders for "best episode of all time" that they haven't reached yet, so we still have even more peaks to look forward to! But definitely this episode is in the Top 5 of all time. Incredible (non)writing!

Lola Lirola

True! So funny. Yeah, the silent OMITB one is also incredible.

Youtalkingtome

I loved it. Great writing, and truly terrifying villains.

Youtalkingtome

I thought she looked familiar, but I couldn't place her when I looked her up.

Youtalkingtome

The whole cast was having a ball when they couldn't talk. Such captivating storytelling!

Lola Lirola

Wait, what do you know her from? I only know her from Buffy. Has he done something else I should be checking out?

Daniel Lydford

They started getting there in season 2, but this is probably the peak of monster of the week, but also moving the plot along at the same time.

Gail Hislop

Tara will become very familiar 😉

TalynOne

Loved the reaction, some trivia for the episode: Yes, the leader of The Gentlemen is played by Doug Jones (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, The Shape of Water). The scene where Buffy objects to Giles' drawing of her with wide hips, was apparently improvised by Sarah Michelle Gellar. Joss Whedon claimed he wrote this as a challenge to himself. Critics had hailed him for his deft use of banter and witty wordplay, so he decided to see if he was a good enough writer to craft a script which was largely lacking any dialog at all.

danzthename

We made it to Hush y'all!

Pam Nail

- This is one of three episodes of the show that has a 9.7 rating on IMDB (the highest rated episodes of the show). The other two are still to come. This is also the episode that got the show its single Emmy nomination for writing. - Welcome to the show, Tara! I love our introduction to her, and I always feel kind of bad for her when she tries to speak up in the wicca group. It might be just me, but there's something passive-aggressive and "hmmmm? we're all listening!" about how the other girls are encouraging her to talk. - [rot13 for Angel spoilers] Oyvax naq lbh'yy zvff uvz, ohg gung'f Naql Unyyrgg gjb ebjf oruvaq Ohssl va ure cflpu pynff qernz.

she and eliza dushku were in a movie together when they were younger. bye bye love. with randy quaid, paul reiser, matthew modine, rob reiner, janeane garofalo . . .

nj

i was counting down as we got closer.

Erin

The whole “can’t even shout, can’t even cry” song/nursery rhyme is still amazing and creepy 25+ years later. I still remember every word and it sometimes just comes to me randomly. Suggesting they call Cordelia while no one can talk made me chuckle! They couldn’t go get somebody/call them to come, because the news report said the town was quarantined.

Surviving Ragnarok

Amber Benson has also written some books and worked as a producer/director.

Carl Wilson

Classic episode! Btw they can't get anyone with a voice to come in from outside because Sunnydale is under quarantine (presumably enforced by state police or something like that). I assume that was the whole point of showing us that news report. Also: Crossbows! Basically never helpful close up!

danzthename

Definitely a fan favorite for many reasons, some that will be made clear later. But just the complete silence for most of it while still progressing the story beautifully, and especially the music. The scores in Buffy are really impressive when you pay attention to them. Hush has its own unique score that isn't used anywhere else. There are a number of episodes like that. Christophe Beck was the composer and he knocked it out of the park from start to finish. Oh, and Anya is the absolute best. I love her so much.

Carl Wilson

Joe noticed his name in the credits but didn't know which one it was.

Carl Wilson

Sarah Michelle Gellar had been in Scream 2 not too long before this, so I can't help but think having her end the fight with a scream was a joke about her "scream queen" status.

Chris

I love that they continue the worldbuilding of a slayer power being prophetic dreams. Like she has this bottomless unconscious well of experience of the other slayers to draw on. Also Riley giving peak golden retriever breaking the wrong thing. Straight guys.

Laura Dawson

She was in an episode of Supernatural too. A few Buffy alumni have been guest actors on that show.

Laura Dawson

Jonathan Creek? He was only in the pilot episode of that show, and didn’t it first air in the mid-90s? Or was there another show with that song? Genuinely interested as I love that song and the actor.

Laura Dawson

Have you guys seen the show ‘What we do in the Shadows’? Doug Jones plays a wonderful character on that show. The show (and the movie) are both great.

Erica

I will say - doug jones is a great monster actor, but super underrated as a regular comedic actor. Ive seen him play a few regular human characters with no prosthetics or makeup, and he is genuinely so hilarious and charming. I wish he was utilized more in that way! It took me forever to find this but this is what comes to mind 😂 https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTkbQr81x/

Jamie Morgan

Yeah, this is quintessential Buffy. Creepy villains, great sets, great music, gimmicky idea turned into genuine psychological horror, amazing performances all round, and they threw in some great comedic moments for good measure! If there were any episode of Buffy I'd want to wipe from my mind so I could experience it for the first time again, it's this one.

Jiiinx1753

My all time favorite episode! I love silent movies so this was so much fun. The FX make up for the Gentlemen is so good! 😊 I’m glad y’all enjoyed it. 😏

Kat

I love this episode. There are others that are technically better, but this is my number 1. It's just so well done, fun and genuinely scary. My daughter has a t-shirt with the 'Buffy will patrol tonight' slide on it, it's awesome 🤣

camata42

I have to agree. Whilst this is a great episode there are several more contenders. Two in particular that are streets ahead and go down as some of the best in television, let alone in Buffy.

Paul Komoroski

OMitB is my first watch along with Joe and Kevin. When their silent episode came, it made me think of Hush, which I knew would be coming soon on here. (I had to, well, hush so as not to spoil anything.) And I figured that Hush had to've influenced it.

Paul Komoroski

Had seen this episode a bunch before seeing Shape of Water and the Star Trek: Discovery series, but it was long time before I made the connection that Jones was in Hush.

Youtalkingtome

I can totally see why. This was an excellent piece of television

Laura Dawson

Oh, I see some has already requested the movie - looking forward to that!

Carl Wilson

I think the Wicca-wannabes are being patronizingly "nice" to Tara because of her stammer.

Carl Wilson

*That is a great T-shirt idea.

Jontor11

I know Amber from the movie 'Latter days'. I think that was later than Buffy.

Jamie Morgan

I'm getting that as a tattoo soon! ^_^

Brad Bunch

The events of Hush really introduce a number of themes and plots moving forward in Buffy. It's at least a spiritual predecessor along with the final episode of this season. Season 4 is probably my least favorite overall, but it does have a handful of key episodes.

Christopher simeon

I assume this was the mid-season finale when those things existed in TV land. Communication between the Scooby gang has been way less compared to previous seasons so I think thematically having a villain that takes away their communication completely is fitting. They all have had their own separate storylines. Xander and his life. Giles and his role as watcher. Buffy and Riley storyline. Willow and her magic progress plus break up with Oz.

kosmickrab

That felt so much like a Doctor Who episode to me in ways. Those were some of the best designed monsters I've seen.

Carl Wilson

I went back to rewatch for fun and it's occurring to me now how different this episode would be today - almost not worth making. Everyone would just be texting, immediately, and probably working from home online. Yes, they come up with the idea of the handwritten signs here, but only slowly, and that's way more charming anyway. To get the same effect they'd have to add some other plot element to jam electronic communications.

NyzoiB

I just read your comment, and you're absolutely right. This episode would be completely ruined in today's world.
