Oh wow! My dad loves this movie. I haven't seen it since I was a kid!

Speaking of William Friedkin if you get the chance check out the Brinks Job (1978) starring Peter Falk, Peter Boyle, Warren Oates, and Gena Rowland among others. A comedy based on the true story of the 1953 Brinks robbery in Boston, Massachusetts at the time the biggest robbery in U.S. history.

Since Peter Falk’s character is in the CIA his being in Guatemala means he was probably part of the 1954 CIA backed coup.

Serpentine, Shelly! Serpentine! Alan Arkin is so good in this. He can do about anything. Have you seen Wait Until Dark with Audrey Hepburn? Hepburn is great and Arkin is terrifying as the villain. The 2003 sequel with Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks is disappointing. The whole thing falls flat and it makes you realize how much the original depends on the chemistry between Falk and Arkin.

I loved this movie when I was young. I think it was the first time I learned that comedy can be based on delivery and timing, as epitomized by Alan Arkin's performance. By the way, Peter Falk's son is played by Michael Lembeck who was not only an actor, but went on to become an Emmy-winning television director of sitcoms over the past three decades.

This was delightful!

This is a movie where the performance of the leads was so good, it was a mistake from the get-go to remake it. A copycat was never going to be as good as the original.

Alan Arkin was so all-over-the-map funny here. This would have been an easy role to chew the scenery and play to the camera, but he was so weirdly restrained and deadly serious that it was hysterical.

Youtalkingtome

That was great! He should have gotten opportunities to sing in film more (he certainly had a strong Broadway background).

Seconding the Wait Until Dark love!

NYC had the first bike lanes in the US in Brooklyn in 1894-had to look that up... They put in bike lanes in Manhattan during the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo when there were lines 2 hours long with odd/even license plate number gas rationing

A six back of Budweiser will cost $1200. That would be awful NO, that would be the US in 2026 after the GOP is done ruining our economy with tariffs and oil price shocks....

When Alan Arkin opened the safe there seemed to be a UFO and Loch Ness Monster on one of the Pater Falk awards/certificates

I remember seeing this in the summer of '79, when I was still 12 years old. At the first "multi-plex" theatre in my life, six lousy little screens with not nearly enough rise between rows. Always the back of an adult's head.

Serpentine is the best! Still remember cracking up at it as a kid 47 years ago. Nuts.

Youtalkingtome

Every mall theater I have ever been in has almost no rise between rows. It's crazy it took so long to figure it out.

Ben Gilbert

As good as Albert Brooks can be, he isn't a good replacement for Alan Arkin.
