Nevada Day: Part 1

I think this is one of the better pair of episodes, have always really loved this storyline. One thing to remember is that Harriet is largely based on Kristen Chenoweth and it seems a lot of this was Sorkin trying to have arguments "with" Kristen through Harriet (since he was broken up with Kristen at the time). From what I can remember, Kristen did make some gay comments around this time -- as you point out, there was the huge debate on gay marriage at the time. Of course, as you point out, once the Supreme Court decided it settled down within a year or so (for the most part). The 700 Club was also apparently a real story and could also be what broke up Sorkin and Chenoweth (like Matt and Harriett). Chenoweth has apparently had some issues in Hollywood, again, for both being Christian and, at the same time, for being to "liberal" of a Christian -- since she wouldn't do things like condemn gays. It seems Sorkin wanted someone on the show to represent Christians (since he wanted to make fun of religion, apparently), and so Harriet, based on real life experiences of Kristen's, became that character. You also have to remember that while he has Matt make fun of her (and likely Sorkin has given Chenoweth a similar hard time), but he also shows respect for her and even (sometimes) gives her "powers" (how the lights in the one episode turned on her command and off when people "doubted" her). Sorkin has his moments where he lets the Christianity shine (or at least Harriett). I think you need to wait until next weeks episode to really appreciate John Goodman's character. It is important to realize that everything so far with Goodman has been off the record, since the prosecutor isn't there, and it appears Goodman's character likes baiting the people from Hollywood -- and race has been one of the things Sorkin has been talking about in this show (last week with Simon talking about how he can see his old neighborhood from his house). I'm really looking forward to next week's episode.

The scene between Bradley Whitford and Steven Webber on the plane was SO good..

Kevin, you hit the nail on the head in regards to Harriet's character. Sorkin is using her as a device to bring up religious debate, but she never comes across as believable or sympathetic. It's one of the main problems I had with this series. I enjoyed most of the writing and the characters in the show, but not her, and not the idea that we're supposed to think their sketch show is funny when it's clearly not.

Multiple press people during the run of the show were comparing Harriet stories to articles about Kristen and it followed her for awhile, at one point she was blaming the bad press for Pushing Daisies cancellation and then called Disney cowards for being too skittish to air her Good Christian Bitches show during the good ratings months (as much as I was looking forward to the show it wasn't that good)

Michael Bennett

I completely agree about the joint, it drives me nuts they're treating it like a real problem when Nevada doesn't have jurisdiction over it. I liked the way they wrote and shot the "fight" where Tom pushed the guy. I was 100% expecting actual blows to be thrown, but this played out pretty realistically -- three guys trying to act tough, but none of them wanted to actually be in a fight.

I love 'Jack fuming' scenes. He is so incredibly good at it! Also, Goodman is so good as authority characters. When I was a kid, I saw him more in funny-funny, fat-guy roles, but being the step-in President in West Wing (technically, literally the very last Sorkin scene: the Speaker walking in to the west wing, showing his shoes first), or Judge Bebe here (an eerily similar scene), I love him.

I assumed calling Simon "Sammy" was referring to Sammy Davis Jr., but I could absolutely be wrong; it could be based on the Sambo slur as you alluded to

In case you didn't know, Tom Jeter is played by Nate Corddry who is the brother of Rob Corddry.

Weed wasn't legal in California either till 2016, so does it make a big difference for the Nevada cops in that case which state it was caught in? I'm Canadian and don't know how the jurisdictional issues work. (Drug laws in Canada are all federal, and weed is legal nationally since 2018.)

(1) This is maybe the best episode since the first one or two. (2) The exception is that I totally feel like Harriet is getting railroaded in Sorkin's writing for the personal reasons other commenters have explained. I doubt her character would have handled it that way at all. That *was similar to how some Democratic politicians handled it (the Clintons, e.g.) but not sketch comedians (even if they had issues, they would have been too smart to say so). Thanks for saying what you said, Kevin. (3) What Jack said on the airplane deserved a punch in the face.

However, don't be so sure that the extreme right will not revisit gay marriage if they get the chance, even now. Once they finish removing all trans rights, that's next.

Carl Wilson

Even if they themselves find it on the prisoner, as they did here, they don't have jurisdiction over it?

Michael Bennett

I'm not a lawyer, but no, because they brought him there. They have jurisdiction over the speeding that he did in NV, not the joint he was carrying in CA.

Two of my fave episodes of the series. That whole culture wars quote might've been overly simplified, but IMO still pretty accurate. ;) John Goodman was great as the judge. ♥ basset hounds. So cute! Like all the different ongoing conversations in this episode(s).

Youtalkingtome

This was a really fun one. Felt a lot like The West Wing

Youtalkingtome

It seemed like it was legalized so long ago. God it's been a long 10 years

Youtalkingtome

I loved him on The West Wing. He commanded every scene

Youtalkingtome

I think Sarah Paulson is very good but she's not the strongest of all the Sorkin characters

Ashley Thomas

this two parter is funny. i tink its not that harriet is in hollywood, but that shes in late night comedy. and yeah weed wasnt legal. neither was gay marraige. this was back when that was being debated, and almost a decade before it happened.

This episode was really good! I love that thanks to you guys I am watching shows I otherwise never would have even heard about (I'm in Germany and I'd never even heard the title before, which makes sense since this show gets so deep into US American (pop) culture, I don't think it would be appealing for most Europeans). I'm enjoying it immensely and I'm glad I'm not missing out on this!
