In response to "he could let it go" Matt didn't want to have that conversation. Harriet pushed him for an answer and eventually got one she didn't like.

This is such a strong Jack episode. Weber saying "oh Get away from me, man" always cracks me up

Just an update that the Harriett-Kristen comparison, Kristen Chenoweth made very similar comments to what Harriett said. And, just like the show, Kristen got hit from both sides -- she had the album of Christian music that had just come out and was asked not to perform by a Christian group for not being bigoted enough. If you talked to Christians about gay marriage in those days, this was the standard argument from more "liberal" Christians. Also, since I don't recall hearing you mention it, it is worth noting that this episode was directed by Timothy Busfield.

A 1977 Anita Bryant reference is kind of strange for women their age. They would have been toddlers, no? I would be surprised if many people knew about her, she was a singer, but I grew up in Florida and only knew her as spokesperson for the citrus industry.

The Jordan ex-husband storyline is loosely based off of actress Jeri Ryan and ex-husband, Illinois US senate candidate Jack Ryan, sex club controversy from 2003. The British female writer is actress Lucy Davis. She was in Wonder Woman and Shaun of the Dead. It most known for portraying Dawn Tinsley, the original Pam, on the British version of the Office. Goodman won the guest actor Emmy for his performance these two episodes.

I watched Wings occasionally but I'm much more used to Steven Weber playing the heavy on dramas.

Sadly the gay marriage debate hasn't changed as much as you'd think. I've had more arguments with people over the last 10 years then the previous 10. Unfortunately some of the people who were saying I don't know now are being way less diplomatic.

Definitely. I had to look it up myself. I had seen the video of her getting hit in the face with the pie before (without knowing it was she they were talking about), but it was definitely an older reference. Guys like Hank Williams Jr. and David Allen Coe would have been more contemporary and worked as well.

I honestly don't know if I've seen Weber outside of Wings and this. I'd have to look at his iMDB.

Out of the shows he’s been on one that you all would like where he has a recurring role eventually is Brothers and Sisters. An underrated drama he joined the cast of right after Studio 60. The creator of that show got started on tv selling a story to Sorkin for West Wing.

Such a great episode… Steven Weber is a national treasure. He also seems to be a deeply decent man which just adds to his good looks and charm!!

As a gay woman, even a non-American one, I'm very aware of Anita Bryant's homophobic activism.

Goodman was great in this episode. You might recognize Julia Ling (Kim/billionaire's daughter) from her stints on Chuck & ER.

Steven Weber crushed it in this episode and Jack definitely became one my favourite characters because of it. He is currently one of the leads on Chicago Med and has been for the last 4 season, playing the head of the emergency department and the Attending trauma surgeon, who had previously been in war zones as a naval surgeon. He is a very complex and intense personality, with storylines heavy on the drama. He also had a long running arc on NCIS New Orleans as a the corrupt Mayor and 8 episodes on drama Brothers and Sisters post Studio 60, along with guest appearance in multiple tv and film projects.

There's a view in leftist circles that racist vs non-racist is an inherently flawed distinction. White supremacy is structural more than it is a personal failing, and the mere absence of racial animosity in your heart does nothing to dismantle those structures. Thus, if you're not anti-racist, you're doing the work of racism simply by upholding the status quo. Harriet does the work of homophobia, and she benefits from heteronormative structures of power. She may not have any personal enmity towards gay people, but she's definitely not anti-heteronormativity. We can also analyse her from a Schmittian perspective. She is personally friendly with gay people, but they are still her political enemies. When her fellow Christians enact violence on gay people, she'll wring her hands and try to speak around it, but at no point does she actually break ranks. When push comes to shove, she'll let gay people be sacrificed.

Well-said. I was definitely on a "Harriet is wrong-headed but ultimately harmless because she just avoids a side," but the conversations later in the episode (with Jordan and later Matt) demonstrate how malignant she really is, siding with a homophobic fundamentalist Christian group and defending it with "I don't agree with everything they do." It's really not hard to take even a tiny stand.

Anita Bryant's anti-gay campaign was *incredibly notorious, constantly referenced by activists, comedians and gossip mags well into the 90s. Her name was basically shorthand for homophobia. Anyone socially aware in their 30s in the mid-2000s would remember it. Harriet's the only one who might not, more because of where she comes from culturally than her age, although her preachers might well have used Bryant's name in a positive light.

It was the bit about those heartland people who "care about their marriages" that really lost me all sympathy with her. Mostly the obvious part Matt said about how gay marriage doesn't hurt their marriages, but you know who else cares about their marriages? Gay people who want to GET MARRIED, like everyone else can, and who don't want your "civil union" consolation prize. Plus, people in big cities also care about their damn marriages, Harriet. Maybe a lot of young hot celebrities don't, but they actually aren't the majority of the population of New York or Los Angeles. Grrrr.

I'm from Las Vegas. Pahrump is a real place, as is Clark County, and the Nellis Air Force base, which isn't too far from where I live. I appreciate your correct pronunciation of the state. It always irks me when TV and movies say, "Nah-vah-da." Also, Steven Webber is pretty great in Mel Brooks' Dracula: Dead and Loving It if you ever get a chance to see that.

Ashley Thomas

steven weber is great in dramas. hes been on chicago med for a few years and he was on ncis new orleans for years too. i watched wings back in the day but i think i like him better in more serious roles.

Michael Bennett

I really wish I had seen this 20 years ago. Good on Sorkin for swinging for the fence (or for getting off it) in the mid 2000s. Jack's honor speech was epic, reminded me of PSH's speech about loyalty from Charlie Wilson's War.

Nannette

As someone born in 1998 I am well aware of who Anita Bryant was, so I don't know that I agree with this opinion. I think it's less of a generational question and more of a topical one. If you know anything about queer history, you'll likely know about that vile woman.
