My all-time favorite Shakespeare adaptation! Ken Branagh got the vibe of the play exactly right, even when he took liberties with the story. Keanu wasn't great but it's a pretty thankless role. Being the humorless villain in a bawdy comedy is a challenge, to say the least. Could another actor have done it better? Sure. But he was fine. A one-note portrayal of Don John isn't going to kill this movie. Denzel Washington was the surprise for me when I first saw it. I knew he was a great actor but that doesn't always translate to being a great Shakespearean actor. He surpassed most of the cast (and certainly all of the other Americans) at making the dialogue sound very natural and conversational. Did you recognize Imelda Staunton as Margaret? I don't think I heard you mention it so maybe not. Hard to believe that cheery, lusty lady went on to play Dolores Umbridge and the Queen of England. I agree that the direction and camera work were outstanding. This movie has one of my favorite opening credits of all time with the joyous music and everyone rushing to bathe and change and meet in the courtyard just as "Directed by Kenneth Branagh" flashes on the screen. And that finale was INSANE. A one-shot from the not-wedding, through the house, into the gardens, and up into the air (it was a crane shot) without a break. I'm so glad you reacted to this one.

I remember watching this on a rainy day at Boarding School and just loving it. I was 12 or 13 at the time and I think it was the first time I realized that Shakespeare could be accessible. I didn't understand everything that was said, but I got the gist, and suddenly Shakespeare seemed a little less scary. It was one of those Eureka moments I'll always remember.

I LOVE this movie! In my senior year of high school (over 20 years ago) I wrote an essay about Shakespearean humor and showed the clip of Dogberry examining the criminals at the jail, during my presentation. I agree, the filming location is absolutely gorgeous!
