two pennies no waiting

The "home movie" is a movie adaptation of the novel "A Room with a View" the entire story starts off not too dissimilar to Emily's reaction to the ancient ruins viewed from their room in Rome. In the clip you saw the "Emily" was Maggie Smith and the "Rory" was Helena Bonham Carter I am not team Dean in any capacity. I would be team Tristan before I'm team Dean, but I see it as Dean directing his anger at Rory without actually blaming her. His words are more around "what is wrong with me" and his anger toward Rory is about the limbo created by her ghosting him for 7 weeks. At least it's all out in the open and Lindsay can move on from her loser ex husband. Very excited for the rest of this season. It's one of my favs once the Rory/Dean drama clears the air!

Youtalkingtome

That's a really fair observation. Maybe Dean wasn't really blaming Rory, but his outward frustration seemed directed at her. Maybe this will be a turnaround point for him as well as Rory. And you're right, at least Lindsey can move on.

LB Mac

I think Rory deserved all the smoke. Remember, she was saying very ugly judgemental shish about Lindsay in Doose's. How would any wife feel hearing her husband's ex gossiping about private things her husband is sharing with another woman? Then she tells Dean she doesn't want them to be friends and it's obvious that didn't happen. I' m sure Lindsey told her mama all of that and Teresa went off because of course Rory was doing shady stuff. It was bad that it was in the street but Teresa had an opportunity, I would've taken it too.

Dean handles every situation in the absolute worst way and I honestly can’t blame Lindsey’s mom for reacting the way she did, they literally found out that same day and are in the absolute height of their emotions. Rory’s letter also says that she doesn’t regret sleeping with Dean so she does not come off like she has any remorse. Dean should get the brunt of their anger and even though she didn’t intend to hurt anyone, intent is not the main factor when you cause harm. The movie they start at the end of the episode is A Room with a View from 1985 with Helena Bonham Carter and Maggie Smith.

Carl Wilson

Lindsey's mom was a little over the top but it's pretty understandable. Lorelai very likely would have done the same thing in that position. Neither Rory nor Lindsey were saying anything, so it was like the moms were having a proxy war on their behalf. I agree you don't do that in the middle of the public street like that, but this all just happened that day, so people are going to act unreasonable. The smart move for Rory would have been staying out of sight after hearing what happened with Dean and Lindsey.

If Dean [and Lynsey] "already knew it was over," then why is he upset... that it's over? Why is that new information?

Carl Wilson

I think if you look at the actual words Dean said, you can tell that he's more upset with himself than with Rory - though he does feel hurt by her, unjustifiably. But he's never (or at least not since the Sherman-Palladinos chose to make him worse and dumber when Jess came along) had any ability to control his emotions or his temper. It's still important to remember that these kids are all 19 years old. I think there's lots of reason to hope that Dean's going to sort himself out as he grows up more, but I'm not saying it's going to happen anytime soon.

LB Mac

Lorelai did kinda sorta pull a Teresa when she gave Luke hell after Jess and Rory's car accident.

Another great reaction, guys! I was hoping to hear more at the end about Luke and Lorelai! Also, Rory apologizing to Lorelai. The Lane and Zack development, too... I know the biggest issue in this episode was Dean and Rory. Dean had no right to say those things to Rory and blame her for his situation. I'm surprised he didn't directly blame Rory for his breakup with Lindsay, because SHE sent him the letter! He was repeating to Rory that he was married, and that she should've been the one to stop it, when Rory actually brought up Lindsay and suggested they go away on a trip, or go see a therapist, before anything happened! Yes, Rory shouldn't have done it, but it's not her fault that Dean cheated on his wife! That was HIS choice. He went after Rory to her house, when he didn't get the kiss he wanted from her at the Dragonfly. He was trying to kiss her in a building that had half of the town in it! He wasn't even trying to hide it! Dean even said to Rory that he threw away his marriage for her, and then she took off on him! So, if she hadn't gone on that trip with Emily, everything would be fine?!?!? He is RIDICULOUS!!! If he was really blaming Rory, he wouldn't have asked Lorelai all of those questions about her, and he would've refused to take the letter. Such a jackass!!! Dean is definitely my least favorite character on the show... up to this point, anyway... even worse than Tristan or Christopher!

Maggie also played Mother Superior in the Sister Act movies! My Aunt Ruth is a Catholic Nun. She loves those movies! lol!

Very glad that you guys confirmed you've come around on Liz :) I remember listening to you talk about her before the show really introduced her and hoping that they would successfully flip your expectations -- Liz and TJ are so much fun every time they're on screen

Gail Hislop

At this point Lorelai and Luke aren't dating yet. They had the kisses at the Inn on the trial weekend and then he got the call from Liz to come and help them, which was only supposed to be a week, but turned into 7. So, whilst there have obviously been phone calls whilst he was gone they haven't really officially been dating. I think at this point we all wished Rory and Dean were over, but I wont spoil what is to come in the next few episodes....

The Inedible Mattman

What I love about the last few episodes is that it shows how messy relationships really are. And how Rory is NOT ready to be an adult making her own choices. Buuuuuuut ... Dean is absolutely the worst. He was a punk early on, with his anger always being a problem. And he only got worse as the show has gone on. As of this moment, I remember HATING Dean's character for how he treated this whole situation. But the chemistry between Luke and Lorelai ... omg it's so palatable haha

This might be a hot take, but I don’t think people are being too hard on Dean. I don’t hate him, and I’m not saying Rory is innocent, but I do think Dean carries more responsibility for the failed marriage than Rory does. At the end of the day, Dean was the one who took vows. He chose to marry Lindsay. He chose that commitment and the responsibilities that came with it. Rory was already living her own life and not really thinking about him until he slowly reinserted himself into her world. He talked to her often, called her, gave her his number, and kept that connection alive. That doesn’t excuse Rory’s actions at all. I especially disagree with her sense of entitlement toward him, like he still somehow belonged to her. That mentality was wrong. But I also think context matters. Rory was vulnerable at the time — struggling at school, feeling lonely, disconnected, and emotionally overwhelmed. On top of that, the people around her didn’t exactly discourage the situation either (especially during the spring break episode with the two high school friends). So while Rory absolutely shares blame, I think Dean carries more of it because he was the married person and he helped initiate and encourage the emotional situation that led to everything else. At the same time, I still feel bad for Dean as a human being. I can recognize that he made mistakes, regretted them, and was clearly unhappy. But feeling empathy for him doesn’t mean removing accountability. I don’t see him as a victim in the situation, and I don’t think people are unfair for criticizing his role in it.

Jiiinx1753

Yeah, Lindsay was definitely more innocent when she married Dean. But I don’t necessarily think young marriage itself is the problem. Plenty of people married young in the past and stayed together because they were genuinely prepared for the responsibilities that came with marriage. I think nowadays a lot of people are less emotionally prepared and don’t always have strong role models for what marriage actually takes. That said, I think Dean and Lindsay were doomed from the start because the marriage was never fully about them. It felt more like Dean trying to move on from Rory by committing to someone else. I don’t think Lindsay knew that, and I don’t even think most of the adults around them realized it either because Dean seemed genuinely invested at first. To me, the real issue wasn’t their age — it was the unresolved emotional connection between Dean and Rory that never fully went away.

Jiiinx1753

I also think the argument between Lindsay’s mom and Rory’s mom makes sense from both sides, even if it was uncomfortable. Honestly, it probably would’ve been smarter for Rory to lay low for a while out of consideration for the people hurt by the situation. Not because she should hide forever, but because emotions were still fresh. At the same time, Lindsay and her mom were just out living their lives. They weren’t looking for Rory, so when they unexpectedly saw her after everything that happened, it makes sense that they reacted emotionally. From their perspective, Rory had already shown very little remorse, and now she was casually walking around town like nothing happened. I also think Rory and Lorelai sometimes carry a certain entitlement, partly because of how they were raised and how they approach situations. There’s often this mindset of “take what’s yours” or walking into spaces with confidence no matter what. Confidence itself isn’t bad, but situations like this require balance and awareness of how your actions affect the people around you. It’s not about being ashamed forever or hiding from the world. It’s more about recognizing that when your actions have deeply hurt other people, there’s a level of sensitivity and consideration that should come with that.

AlecSinWonderland

I’m with Theresa on this one. Sure, a little loud but her daughter is hurt and they just happened to run into the cause of that hurt. Completely understandable reaction. They’re lucky it wasn’t physical because with cases like these it’s not unheard of to be so.

Carl Wilson

Let's not idealize the past. People married young because it was expected, and it was also the only way (for the women) to have sex and not be shunned. I'm not sure people were any more prepared for what marriage really entails, they just accepted that it was what they were supposed to do. An awful lot of those marriages were *not good, especially for the women, and divorce was extremely stigmatized and not considered an option for a lot of people. This was the main (though far from only) trap that produced modern feminism to liberate women from it. And even the best early marriages usually go through very rough times as the couple struggles to stay compatible as they mature, even if they make it through. (Have seen this in my own family.) But Dean and Lindsey didn't live in those times. The worst thing about Lindsey's mom imho is not the way she acts in this episode but that she didn't *strongly encourage her daughter to wait at least a year or two and see if Dean was really right for her.

Carl Wilson

We're all (myself included) still talking about Dean when we should be talking about Luke! So many great moments for him & Lorelai in this episode.

Youtalkingtome

Oh okay, I've heard of it! Was that Helena Bonham Carter in the shot? If so, she looks a lot like Rory

Youtalkingtome

I really should have brought up Lane and Zack. So much was thrown at us this week! God this was such a good episode

Youtalkingtome

They are a lot of fun. I still like Liz more than TJ

Gail Hislop

I will give you boys a little game and a sneaky hint at 3 things to look out for in the next episode - a meeting by a coffee cart, a small surprise guest appearance of someone you know from another favourite show of yours and a line from Luke that is Gilmore Girls lore .

fire12wife

They love to throw everything into a season finale, and then it takes until Christmas to get it all untangled! lol! Gotta love it!

So ends the stupid Dean marriage storyline. I'm not going to miss it. I have no problem with what Lindsay's mother did. Yeah, I get that making a public scene is not necessarily right, but it was deserved, especially because the whole town has been glazing this girl her whole life. Someone needed to do some yelling at Rory for what she did, particularly someone she hurt, and Lorelai's lecture didn't cut it. The big problem with Lorelai's parenting is that she has so much invested in her friendship with Rory that it affects her decisions and approach as a mother. "I feel bad that my daughter is angry with me for disciplining because I depend on her friendship" is not something I'm concerned about with my daughter whatsoever. And it shouldn't be.

Nana

I actually loved Lindsey's mom coming at her like that. The town sees Rory as this perfect innocent kid but she's really not. She knew what she was doing.
