I love this movie! You guys are constantly putting out reactions to fantastic films that no one else is watching. Thanks for the continued great content.

Ben Gilbert

It was based on a short story by Isak Dinesen aka Karen Blixen, whose story was told in the movie Out of Africa.

Fabulous! This is another I’ve been meaning to see for years. I’m not too far in, but the various men falling for the sisters at the church reminded me of a story you might like: Once upon a time, my grandfather went to a service near his home in rural Wisconsin, near-ish Green Bay. It was the kind of small Protestant church where the choir sits at the front of the sanctuary, facing the congregation. My grandfather was looking through the singers - apparently one of his friends had just starting dating this girl, and he was trying to figure out which one she was. But he found Ruth. Smitten immediately. My grandfather tried to get Ruth’s attention as subtly as possible. Making eyes, shifting in his seat. Eventually he dropped his hat on the floor to make a sound so maybe she’d look — at which point he got an elbow from his father: “Milton, cut it out. You’re at a funeral.” At this point in the story we all laugh. My grandfather, Milton, and my grandmother, Ruth, were married in the spring of 1944. They had six children - five boys, and my mother. They had been married 72 years when he passed. I love that story. And bits of this reminded me so much of that….Anyway, back to the movie…

That's a really sweet story! Congrats to Milton and Ruth!

I adore this film! I saw this on TCM for the first time many years ago. I remember Anthony Bourdain saying this is one of the most beautiful depictions of creating a meal on film. He also loved Ratatouille.

Toc

Adorable!!! (and isn't this a great movie?!!)

What a delightful story!!

Ok, so I finished the movie now and… OMG, I loved it. This is going on my regular rotation of comfort movies, language barrier be damned :) Once they got into the ‘feast’ part of the movie, oh man, Babette is a character after my own heart. I know if I ever came into an absurd amount of money, my first thought would be “cool, how many friends and family can I fit into this house for a fancy meal?” Food — “We can’t get anything close where we’re at.” … Perhaps, but you might be surprised what you can make at home for relatively cheap. Here are few beginner-friendly options: — Dinner in French, by Melissa Clark — Big Heart Little Stove, by Erin French — Today’s Gourmet with Jaques Pepin — https://www.youtube.com/show/VLPL_PgxS3FkP7ABRQAQCkJp81soRHsfCP3v?sbp=Kgs2NzF2clZDTHlSY0AB — Mastering the Art of French Cooking (Vol. I and II), Julia Child… not really for the casual cook, but if you want to do a deep dive.

Thank you! And yes, absolutely!

Ben Gilbert

It’s one of my favorite movies. It makes me warm and happy when I watch it.

I saw this when it was first released, but haven't remembered much of it. I think I was too young and impatient to understand and appreciate what was going on. So thank you, Ben, for giving us all the opportunity to see this with our friends! It's such a beautiful film. You guys might recognize the actor who played the older General from "Fanny and Alexander"; he was the philandering Uncle Gustav, who similarly made speeches at celebratory dinners.

Ben Gilbert

Another of Bergman's actresses, Bibi Andersson, was one of the courtiers when the general meets the queen.

Youtalkingtome

Seriously, if I'm ever short on time. I might start the film during the feast portion. It was absolutely lovely

Youtalkingtome

Wow! That's blowing my mind. Fanny and Alexander was incredible

JENNIFER E

This was my late aunt's favorite movie and I have not watched it years. So excited to see it again.

OMG that is such a great movie! Can't wait to watch your reaction.
