Leah W.

I'm glad you love season 4. There are so many standout standalone episodes and character arcs that I also love about this season. Though the fandom doesn't particularly like the season overall lol

Leaning into the Spider-Man metaphor, and I'm not a comic book fan but based on the movies, they never let Peter Parker grow up. As soon as Buffy got to college, most of her childhood totems were smashed to pieces, including her adorable parasol. And I love the transition of her professor turning into Frankenstein with her own army. It's not often that we get to see a superhero completely grow up. It's going to be an amazing arc...

Nicholas Reed

The vignette that made you think they were being watched was just an artifact of moving from 4:3 to 16:9. I'm not sure why the footage had it, but it wouldn't have been visible in the original broadcast format.

Nicholas Reed

Yeah, season 4 isn't as cohesive as some of the other seasons, but I think it has the highest average quality of episode.

danzthename

Forrest is 100% in love with Riley imo

- The Mayor was mentioned in season 2 but we never actually saw him until season 3. - I will never not giggle at Adam's little floppy drive. I know they're doing a nod to Frankenstein here (especially in his encounter with the little boy, which echoes the scene with the little girl in the '31 film). But we don't know anything about this character except what he monologues at us at the end of the episode. One of the reasons the Mayor is so effective is that he feels like a person and, however evil his intentions, we care about what he's doing and why. I mean, we just met Adam, but he's such a blank slate right now and that's hard to make interesting. - "Lbh pna'g gbc gur Znlbe." Tybevsvphf unf ragrerq gur pung.

The one-offs are the best part of this season. The arc stuff is ... less awesome.

I believe in some syndication markets, tv stations started running season 4 onwards in 16:9. I remember Joss Whedon being very much against it for reasons like this. The latter seasons in widescreen are littered with "mistakes" that would have normally not been visible in 4:3 format.

jimmy2k4o .

"its gonna be hard to follow up the mayor" Oh the future is gonna be glorious haha

Youtalkingtome

I agree with all here: exceptional stand-alone episodes this season (some of my favorite so far on the show), but there definitely aren't the same strong narrative through-lines we saw in S2 and S3.

Youtalkingtome

I agree, the character arc of Buffy has really shone this season. Though the story arcs aren't as defined as before, we see Buffy with more confidence in what she is doing and self-assuredness that she knows the right path for herself. We really do get to see her grow up on the show.

Youtalkingtome

Thank you! We were really confused by some of the odd framing marks here.

Youtalkingtome

All good points. If Adam does become the Big Bad for the season, I really hope we get to learn more about him as a character; the show works best when the villains are as well-developed as the heroes.

Neill Shaughness

As crazy as it sounds the mayor didn't appear till s3 e5

Michael Barrett

"Hello, I am 3-14, human demon relations."

Carl Wilson

When you said Adam would be dead by the end of this episode, I thought, "Ohh, sweet summer child, from your lips to Joss's ears, if only." Also I was sad you talked over the "yummy sushi pajamas" line.

Michael Barrett

One of the things that really makes the Big Bads sing is hamming it up to the max, and Adam suffers a lot from, as you say, being a bit of a blank slate. Mayor Wilkins, The Master, Angelus/Dru/Spike are all scene-chewingly fantastic on screen, and, no spoilers, but the best moments from future villains are hella OTT (emphasis on Hell) as well. Adam, whether from direction or the actor, doesn't have the same panache, and it makes S4 very much its own thing compared to the rest of the show.

Carl Wilson

You've still got a bit more than a third of the season to go, btw.

dys

Agree with Pam here, not sure I quite agree with Nicholas about the average quality of episode being the highest but it does have some of the individual best episodes but is dragged down by a few stinker episodes and a less compelling arc.

Joseph Irizarry

Riley is such a dumbass. No, you wouldn't know anything. You wouldn't even be the last to know. That is your role in this system. You are a pawn, nothing more. Welcome to the military. Dumbass

Joseph Irizarry

Forrest's line about Buffy being a "supernatural freak" is (I think) the only acknowledgment through The Initiative that Buffy is "magic" for lack of a better term, which explains why he is threatened. Also, Forrest is a jealous queen who wants Riley all to himself

Youtalkingtome

Wow! I could have sworn it was S2. Just goes to show how epic S3 was

Christopher simeon

I always try and understand why villains are introduced to a story. Adam is a mix of human, machine, and supernatural unnaturally sown together. He is basically an living example of human beings (more specifically the government) desire to understand and control things they don't understand (the supernatural world) for their own desires. He seemed so curious about human nature and his own purpose. He didn't kill the kid because he was hungry or evil. He killed him to understand how he worked.

Michelle

I have no comments about this episode in particular because, ya know, spoilers. I just wanted to say that I love how much you gentlemen are enjoying this show. It was so much a part of my youth that I rewatch semi-regularly and have gotten grief from guys who think it's just a teen girl show. It simultaneously is, and yet isn't in so many ways. I'm glad you are appreciating it for what it is.

Roland

Thruple Time!

Lyla

So agree. Their reactions and thoughts are such a delight. I love how they see and talk about the show

Carl Wilson

There were *references to the mayor several times before we met him.

Carl Wilson

I mostly agree with you but I don't think we can say he's not evil. Why did he kill Maggie, after all? As he says, he has a design flaw.

Christopher simeon

The demon part of him wanted to kill Maggie perhaps?

Sarah P

Wow! Even as a queer person watching this show multiple times, I never caught on to that angle of their relationship, but it makes a LOT of sense.

Sarah P

1) Thank you for recognizing juuuuust how homoerotic the scene between Willow and Tara was. 💜 2) It’s nice that this show takes place during this age range for the protagonists. We get to see the younger characters go through an incredibly formative time in their lives, and their lives are **this**!

Erica

Oh hey, did you guys purposely skip the recap? The reason i ask is because it's a good idea for 4x15-4x19 specifically, definitely skip those intros. They give too much away lol

Youtalkingtome

Yes, we skip them going into the episode to avoid potential plot spoilers

Erica

Yesss. Sometimes a recap is useful but sometimes it's just too much

Erica

I see what you did there 😜
