The corner the car drives up to the archbishop's mansion at the beginning, then another car speeds down from at the end is Glenbrook and St. Germain in Clarendon Heights. A minute up the street from our old house. You can literally coast from that corner for five or six blocks to the corner of Haight and Ashbury. The archbishop's mansion itself is not in SF.

That's really cool! We live in flyover country, so we rarely have the fun of seeing familiar local places show up in film and television like that.

I saw this first run at age 12...it WAS one the biggest grossing films of that year, I just googled it and it was 11th at the box office just behind the original Halloween at number 10 and The Deer Hunter at number 9...but very far behind Grease, Superman and Animal House which came in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd... this WAS hid debut post SNL prior to Caddyshack

Big Steely Dan fan here...Chevy Chase indeed WAS in a college band with Becker and Fagan...

I just looked myself as a curiosity: $45 million gross against a $5 million budget (huge hit for the time). That budget was relatively high for a comedy, but you can definitely see where it went in the production.

At 35:45 that lamp consisting of silver globes- my parents had one of those in our living room in the 70s and the parents of all my 6th grade classmates took disco/hustle lessons at the local community college....oh Lord!

Saw this in a theatre with my late mother. Woke up the next morning so crushed on Goldie Hawn I could hardly stand it. Shampoo was the first crush, but I was way younger. Also, his houseboat was in Sausalito, across the Golden Gate in Marin county. The county government would love to get rid of all of them, as I recall. Occupying prime yacht space. I think they are grandfathered in legally. They seem idyllic to own and live in, but they're maintenance nightmares. Had a buddy who bought one. Regretted it quickly.

The sad trumpet as Dudley Moore's bed folds away kills me.

Seems Like Old Times is their other movie team up. Goldie makes everything better. She won best supporting actress for Cactus Flower. I liked an early sappy movie called Butterflies Are Free.🦋

Always wondered how you could keep a house boat secure...seems easy to break into... I know people with small boats and they are expensive as hell to maintain...to have an entire house like that is insane...

Ben Gilbert

This was Chase's first real movie. He had earlier played himself in Tunnel Vision. Goldie won an Oscar for her first movie Cactus Flower, which also starred Walter Matthau and Ingrid Bergman.

Ben Gilbert

I've thought about buying all of those movies. Cactus Flower is currently a free movie over at YouTube.

In the 70s, it is somewhat believable that a Detective could be living in a houseboat. It was the mid-80s and 90s, when Silicone Valley started up, that housing prices started to skyrocket.

The Roast of Chevy Chase is considered one of the most infamously brutal and uncomfortable events in comedy history. It aired just once on Comedy Central because the jokes were overwhelmingly mean-spirited, and Chase visibly suffered on stage. Because of his reputation, producers struggled to book close friends and peers.

They have Goldie's movie Private Benjamin coming up on the list. I can't wait.

His movie debut was in 1974's The Groove Tube, a pastiche of sketches lampooning television programs and commercials. It was also the big screen debut of Richard Belzer.

It was Sir John Gielgud who won an Oscar for his role as the butler in Arthur, not Dudley Moore. Moore was nominated though. Have either of you seen Arthur?

This would have been such a fun film to have watched in a theater. Must be a really special memory. Glad you shared this with us. I bet the maintenance on those houses are wild. They just look so cool

Youtalkingtome

She's so charming. She really does have a presence like non other

Youtalkingtome

I wish he would have taken more roles like this. I can see shades of Fletch in this though

Youtalkingtome

There's very few roasts that I enjoy watching. I would be cringing hard if I saw that one

Youtalkingtome

I have not! I remember when the remake came out and that made me aware of the original film and it's awards recognition

I loved that you knew the words to the Manilow songs…good stuff 😀

Roland

I saw this movie when I was still a kid, in a cinema in Egypt(!), and I haven't seen it since. Nonetheless the scene of the two old ladies playing Scrabble has stuck with me for decades...though I had forgotten she misspelled "mother" 🤣

Roland

Goldie Hawn just lights up the screen doesn't she? 🥰🥰🥰

I've never seen The Mikado, though I'm familiar with some of the highlight songs. Is it problematic...well, yeah, but we can avoid throwing the baby out with the bathwater: http://blog.jichikawa.net/2016/11/the-mikado-in-21st-century.html?m=1 Gemini tells me that there have been multiple productions that have re-imagined the show to remove the racist tropes.

If you’re in the mood for more Dudley Moore awesomeness, Bedazzled (1967) cannot be beat. It was co-written by Dudley Moore and Peter Cook and co-starred the pair as well. It’s definitely one to consider for Insomnia Cinema if you’re in the mood for a middle-of-the-night comedic romp with a 60s British mod vibe. Even if you’ve seen the 2000 remake with Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley, it’s quite different than the 1967 version. Also, the remake doesn’t hold a candle to the wit and charm of the original💙.
