Actuarial Lurker

And you thought some of my movie choices were "heavy"....

Actuarial Lurker

My first Steve McQueen films were "The Towering Inferno" disaster film from 1973 first run at age 7 and the cult film "The Blob" from 1958 which starred an enormous blob of "killer gelatin"

Kevin here. True story: those were my first 2 McQueen movies, too. The Blob in junior high on TV, The Towering Inferno in college.

A rectum probably holds a lot of $250 bills...

Ben Gilbert

I saw several of McQueen's movies on TV in the sixties and seventies. I saw The Great Escape, Papillon, The Sand Pebbles, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Magnificent Seven, Nevada Smith, and his TV series Wanted: Dead or Alive. All on network TV. He was a great actor.

co-written by blacklisted Trumbo, who was portrayed by Bryan Cranston in the 2015 film of that name

Child actor Billy Mumy is in this movie. He's the young prisoner near the beginning who walks off the dock into the water and is shot.

Suzanne Whyte

I would rather be guillotined than shot. It’s fairly instant and there’s less room for error.

David Adler

And we still hold people in Guuantanamo, a prison camp in a foreign country we still occupy part of. Nuts.

Ben Gilbert

It was intended to be a more merciful execution. We usually don't think of the guillotine as a modern method but the last person guillotined in France was in 1977. France then abolished capitol punishment in 1981.

Clare Manion

I had never heard of this movie before, but it was fascinating! As soon as it was done, I looked up the book right away & very much looking forward to reading it. I particularly loved the dream sequences. Most of the movie is done in gritty realism, but then to shift into such cinematic surrealism is shocking - but in the best way. And agreed, this is the most nuanced, vulnerable performance I’ve ever seen from McQueen. Joe, you mentioned the spiritual nature of the film, and I think that’s spot on. It’s an incredible character study and examination of the human spirit in some of the worst possible conditions. Absolutely brilliant film.

Youtalkingtome

Wow. I know he was blacklisted. Did he remain uncredited or did I just miss his name in the credits?

Youtalkingtome

There's something so terrifying about the guillotine.

Youtalkingtome

It is a bummer in some ways but it's absolutely about perseverance and going on. The will to live.
