this is a good one. i like the part with the musicians. and the santa predator sketch i thought was actually funny.

Youtalkingtome

Me too! They showed just little enough of the sketches to make them plausibly workable, and the character arcs this episode were fantastic.

Wow. I never finished the series and I'm so sad I didn't support it to a season 2. So far, this is definitely my absolutely favorite episode. And God bless New Orleans...

One of my favourite episodes! Joe- The reindeer known as Donner was originally named Dunder (Dutch for Thunder) in the 1823 poem A Visit from St Nicholas. I loved all the myth busting going on about Christmas and how quickly the writers room had fallen down the internet rabbit hole on it. That trumpet player is Grammy winning musician , band leader and cultural ambassador for New Orleans Troy Andrews, known as 'Trombone Shorty' who began playing music as a toddler. The other band members were all well know New Orleans jazz musicians displaced at the time by Hurrricane Katrina . This performance always brings me to tears with it's beauty and emotion.

Yes, this was after Katrina and, watching it when it originally aired, my eyes got quite "sweaty" with the playing of "O Holy Night." I still have those feelings come over me now, remembering what things were like after Katrina. I don't know when Sorkin was told the season wasn't being renewed, but I assume this episode was after. I suspect, as you theorized, that the original plan would have been that Nations would have ended up saving Jordan's job but it seems the botched interview seems to have caused people to like/feel sorry for Jordan and has saved her job (notice there was no discussion of it this episode). I suspect that much of what happens in the next few episodes were supposed to be season 2 story lines.

As far as timeline goes, it has been roughly 12 weeks since Matt and Danny took the show. Jordan’s pregnancy is related to her knowing about Danny’s test. The other factor is Sorkin never let continuity get in the way of a good story.

As someone who watched this as it was airing, I DO think that — as you were saying — Sorkin knew the show’s days were probably numbered fairly early on in the season. What makes me think that the introduction of Jordan’s pregnancy was the definite sign of him one-seasoning the story, is that it’s the type of storyline that typically gets introduced towards the end of a series, because involving babies in a story makes it a LOT more complicated and expensive.l

Sometimes I really wonder, how a mind like Sorkin's could feel like from the inside. Do you just sit down, and think, 'let's write something emotional and gut-wrenching for a christmass episode, hmmm, let me think...' On the other hand, based on what you hear, and based on some NOT-TO-BE-SPOILERED storylines from the second half of the season, that mind must be a tough place, anyway.

This was just a year and a bit after Katrina, when huge parts of the New Orleans population were still displaced (some never to return) including many musicians. The players are from the Tipitina's Foundation, named for a classic by Professor Longhair and a longstanding New Orleans nightclub, including Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews playing trumpet (altho as his name indicates he's usually a trombonist), and an ensemble of top NOLA brass players.

If this show was going to last longer I would think this is very early to be giving both Matt and Danny big romance moments, so maybe Sorkin already knew the writing was on the wall?

This is EASILY my favorite episode of the whole series. -The trumpet player, Trombone Shorty actually released their rendition of “Holy Night” back when this show was aired. I have it and it is a Christmas staple. -Sorkin had to talk the New Orleans players into the somber version that made the show. I read that they were very upbeat and made the tune too “happy” for the idea that Sorkin had.

Beautiful episode! I loved just how quickly Jack softens!

Youtalkingtome

That seems wild that it has been such a short timeframe. The continuity (with the WGA awards) is definitely off.

Paul T Hewes

not that he softened, just showed again, he has morals and while he is a hollywood exec, he always has been a decent guy in a rough job.

The thing about the reindeer names is true

AudeAudor

And Dunder even has a last name : Mifflin.

O Holy Night on Studio 60 is one of my stand out memories of any TV show. It just hits the feels.

Daniel Lydford

When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts is a Spike Lee documentary on the events in New Orleans surrounding Hurricane Katerina, and would be worth reacting to if you haven't seen it.

And is why Dunder ( Donder) is always paired with Blitzen because thunder always goes with lightning. Plus, what else would you expect a world class trumpet player to be called but Trombone 😉
