!!!!! Underrated film in the US. Phenomenal performances all around

acidnova

Yay! I haven't watched the reaction yet but I wanted to jump in and share a link to Matt Baume's excellent video about this movie. He's a youtuber who does lots of deep dives into LGBTQ+ representation and history in media and does a lot of great research. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEOMAIu-3mU

Lola Lirola

This was the first time I ever saw Hugo Weaving and Guy Pierce! Back in the day, of course. Imagine my surprise when they turned out to be very serious straight actors! 😅

Cristy

Day officially made! This movie just made me love Guy Pearce even more and still today he's one of my fave actors (please tell me you've seen Memento).

Chemical Em

yay definitely watch some john waters in the future!!! my faves are hairspray (original), serial mom, cecil b demented, crybaby and polyester

Cristy

I forgot he was in Crybaby!

Cristy

I remember this movie and Muriel's Wedding came out in the same year, it was a huge time for Australian cinema and Bill Hunter was in both movies.

Elizabeth Schnitzer

This soundtrack was my go to road trip cd since I watched the movie the first time.

Ben Gilbert

Serial Mom and Polyester are on the schedule.

Such fun! It’s been a while since I watched this…probably last year’s Pride month. I had a great time watching it with you. I love this film! The characters are so well-developed and filled with personality plus! Adam/Felicia is a hoot and a half! Guy Pearce did a terrific job. Terrance Stamp and Hugo Weaving were fantastic too. Nothing like seeing Agent Smith in drag! And the cinematography is top notch. It’s an all-around well-done film. The music, the outrageousness, the humor, the ping-pong balls!!!!! Never a dull moment. And I love Tick’s son. By the way, the performer of the song during the credits is a real Sydney drag queen. Also, there’s a special little surprise at the end of the credits. You should go back and watch it. I’ve always had a bit of a bad taste in my mouth with respect to To Wong Foo. After the critical acclaim for Priscilla and its success in U.S. markets where it played, Hollywood decided to make their own version. They set out to find unlikely Hollywood actors that straight people would love to see in drag (Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes) and hype that aspect in trailers. Then they downplayed the sexuality (and sex lives) of our main characters and focused a lot of the drama on straight characters. It was a decent movie (John Leguizamo was the highlight), but it felt like such a second-rate knock off because of the way it came about and the way they played it safe. Ultimately, as you said, Priscilla has more heart. It’s also got more realism and LGBTQ+ awareness/positivity. And the costumes are fabulous!!!!!

Juley

Thanks for sharing this video. It’s great to see the lasting cultural impact of the film!

There's a sequel on the way! > Priscilla Queen of the Desert 2 is officially in development with the original cast returning, including Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, and the late Terence Stamp. Original writer-director Stephan Elliott returns to helm the project, which will take the characters on a new journey across the Australian outback. Before his passing in 2025, the legendary Terence Stamp agreed to return for the sequel. To avoid a digital clone portraying Bernadette, he spent his final months pre-filming all of his character's scenes using a rigorous multi-camera setup. In production, a stand-in will perform the role, and Stamp’s pre-recorded face will be integrated during post-production. Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce are also on board to reprise their iconic drag queen roles. <

This didn't just get an Oscar nomination, it won the Oscar for best costume design.

As a queer person, I can’t recommend Matt Baume’s videos enough. I already liked this movie, while understanding *some of* the context in which it was placed— but the additional information made me appreciate everyone in it more.

Claire Eyles

Acidnova has already shared Matt Baume's excellent video on this film; although he mentions Les Girls as a drag show, it wasn't it was a female impersonator act (one was acceptable to straight people back then, the other wasn't). Anyway, some trivia on the film: The Imperial Hotel in Sydney, where the film starts, is now Heritage Listed as being culturally important to the LGBTQI+ community. The film itself is preserved in the Australian National Film and Sound Archives as one of the most culturally important films in Australian cinema history The costumes are all designed around Australian themes, landscapes and wildlife. Guy Pearce in 1994 was mostly known for his role in neighbours, and for being a heterosexual heart throb, who was considered almost the pinnacle of masculinity. It shocked the hell out of a lot of people when he decided to take the role of Adam, but it was also his lead into Hollywood. Within 10 years of this film being released both Broken Hill (first town they stop in) and Alice Springs have their own Priscilla Pride and Drag parades. Coober Pedy (where Adam is assaulted) is too remote for anything regular, but even they now welcome Drag and other Queer performance shows.

Everyone in this is absolutely on their A game. Only saw it for the first time recently when it popped up on telly one night but I loved it.

Great movie. Australian movies have such a distinct feel to them. They really seem to capture a sense of place. Watching this made me miss the Outback. It has a special feel to it that really appealed to me. I spent two years backpacking Australia in my youth and I think I was in Sydney for about a week and in the Outback for more than six months. I would love to go back.

Michelle Taylor

The song you mentioned in that movie is "Hopelessly Devoted to You" by Olivia Newton-John. This movie did win the best Oscar in 1995 for best costume design.

Claire Eyles

Do you mean the one right at the beginning? Because if so that's I've never been to me by Charlene from 1977. Olivia Newton John isn't listed on the soundtrack or song list for the film (now I need to rewatch it to see if there's something I missed :D)

Lola Lirola

His channel is truly a gem.

Lola Lirola

Oh, thank god they're not doing a digital zombiefication. And how sweet that Stamp's last performance will be as Bernadette.

Lola Lirola

Yeah, I felt the same way about To Wong Foo! It really felt back then that they copied Priscilla. By now, I can see Wong Foo's charms, and it's a sweet movie. But Priscilla deserves more recognition than it has!!

Lola Lirola

With good reason!! Those costumes are **iconic**.

Anndra

This is a really great film and, oddly enough, far better known in the UK than To Wong Foo... is. I only saw the latter film for the first time last year and thought it was fine but kind of a pale shadow of this one (though has some great performances by the leads). This is just a delight though, and has a kind of earthiness to it that I really appreciate and makes the drag performance sequences stand out even more.

Okay here is the low down from a native Sydneysider - Sydney started as a harsh British penal colony, so it has always had a bit of a seedy dark underbelly, and like most global cities it has dangerous areas, which are best avoided. That being said, for the most part, Sydney is now very safe and welcoming to everyone, irrespective of a person’s culture, ethnicity or sexuality.  I can assure you that if you get the chance to visit, regardless of who you are and what your into, you will love it. This movie really captures how Sydney (and really most of Oz) has always embraced the absurd, the alternate, the weird as absolutely normal (very similar feel to Muriel’s Wedding). Now the serious warning - please don’t try eating Vegemite without first consulting with an experienced Australian practitioner!  There is a way to eat Vegemite on toast. You need to get the butter to spread ratio just right.  It is very easy to overdose if you don’t know what you doing - most countries don’t have the type of tolerance to the “Black Death” that all Aussies are born with…please be careful…

Kristi Govertsen

One of my favs! It’s endlessly quotable, danceable, sing-along-able, and rewatchable.💕

Michelle Taylor

Thanks for the correction you are right. It sounds so much like Olivia Newton-John. Because both singers had a similar vocal style and were popular around the same era, their songs are frequently confused.

AdamPacio.art

There is a sequel which is under production currently for Priscilla 2. I'm unsure of the details but I've seen some trailer or teaser announcing the film. They got the bus back.

Youtalkingtome

Ben beat me to it: we have a few of those coming up!

Youtalkingtome

I obviously saw them in later roles, to these were definitely different roles than I am used to seeing them play!

Youtalkingtome

Agree! I've never seen Terence Stamp stretch himself like this.

Youtalkingtome

I love that Bernadette will be Stamp's swan song. Such a wonderful role.

Neill Shaughness

If you're looking for another great Terrance Stamp performance, check out The Hit (1984) also staring John Hurt and a super young Tim Roth

Lola Lirola

Isn't it funny how that first impression lasts? Because this movie was the first thing I ever saw Guy Pierce in, back in the 90s, it felt so odd to me when I saw him act all serious on L.A. Confidential! 😅 Hugo Weaving in Matrix, though, managed to erase my impression of Mitzy immediately, he was so menacing!

Youtalkingtome

I feel like Australia is decades ahead the US in terms of basic humanity, despite any reputation to the contrary.

Youtalkingtome

Such distinctly different roles for Bill Hunter, too! For decades, Australia was known artistically in the US for Paul Hogan, and not much else. We were missing some truly remarkable films here.

Youtalkingtome

This movie had some of the best costuming I have ever seen. Well-deserved award.

Youtalkingtome

Completely delightful. What a beautiful show of humanity through wonderful performances.

Youtalkingtome

We have both indeed seen Memento. Guy Pearce is always on his A game in movies, and he should be a much bigger star in the US than he is.

Youtalkingtome

I will absolutely visit Sydney one day. It's a bucket list dream.

Youtalkingtome

I enjoyed To Wong Foo for its obvious charms, but there is no denying that it really felt insecure about being honest about the sexuality of the characters.

Youtalkingtome

Agreed! There are so many things to love about this movie.

Youtalkingtome

I swear, halfway through watching, I fought off the urge to say "kneel before Bernadette!"

Roland

The Hit is so good, but almost no-one's heard of it!

seth e.

you guys would love The Castle (1997), absolute Aussie classic, incredibly quotable, the most wholesome vibes

seth e.

also, not sure if you figured it out, but the person running by periodically is the distance runner that was being seen off when they first left town (bit of a long-running joke 😂😂)

seth e.

not sure if it's an unpopular opinion, but Mamma Mia 2 is fully the superior one and you can skip 1 altogether honestly

Gail Hislop

Prisicilla is such an iconic film on our Australian cinema history and culturally still iconic. The costumes won an Oscar for Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner and were mostly low budget creations. There are a lot of them on display at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia and they go out on loan to other museums around the country. AND forty six drag performers wore gowns and costumes and performed on a bus styled exactly like Priscilla as part of the Sydney Olympics closing ceremony in 2000. Hugo Weaving up to this point was well known here for his dramatic roles and this was a break out role for Guy Pearce who at the time was most well known in Australia as a beloved star and teen heartthrob character on long running nightly drama Neighbours. So this role was a big shock to his fans!! Also, yes Sydney's Kings Cross in the '90's where the film starts was a very rough place!!

vala p

The costumes for this film are fabulous and a lot of people are probably more familiar with the costumer than you realize. If you've ever seen a picture of a lady wearing a gold credit card dress, that was Lizzie Gardiner at the Oscars accepting for this movie

Youtalkingtome

I have never heard of it! Turns out we are big fans of Aussie cinema

Youtalkingtome

Really? I have never heard that take. I do know that both are beloved

Ashley Thomas

this is a great movie. and im glad that all the actors seem to be really proud of it. its a classic. yes they brought so much stuff with them. but they had to bring everything for a full show for four weeks. thats a lot of shows with many costumes. they would need all that. i get why hugos character was so nervous. this was the 90s. opinions on drag, gay people, gay people around children...it wasnt what it is today. i mean, we seem to be backtracking fast, but you know what i mean. glad you had a good time with this.

Nick Stark

This is such a feel good movie. The music just adds so much character. You both seemed to enjoy it just as much.
