I'm glad you've managed to be spoiler free on GG so far! I know there have been several times when I started to make a comment that didn't countain a direct spoiler, but could've kind of hinted at how things would go, and I ended up not posting b/c I didn't want to ruin it for ya'll!

Lindsey Swift

For some reason the elementary school I attended, played us Pippi Long Stocking lol

Abby T W

I’m just watching the intro right now, but I will say re: the Dean apologists in your comments, there is no clear cut consensus on Dean in the GG community, so you’ll just get to see how it goes and weigh in on the argument in the community!

Carl Wilson

On the timeline: I assume that Luke knew that Dean and Lindsay had broken up. The whole town knew that. He *might even know about Rory's original part in it, as I think Lorelai might have shared that with him in private. There was probably a couple of weeks, maybe more, between Rory getting back from Europe (and Lindsay finding her letter etc) and Rory going to Dean's house to see if they were together, after Marty asked if she had a boyfriend. And maybe it's been a few weeks to a month of them dating since then. So that's what Luke has just found out.

Carl Wilson

Speaking for myself, I wasn't trying to make a big defense of Dean. I'm on Luke's side that he's not right for Pippi, um, I mean Rory. I was just reiterating the general point about how young they are, and that we have years of evidence that Dean's interest in Rory is not just for sex. But you were right that he was pissy about the sex thing last week.

Youtalkingtome

I've never seen it, but it looks absolutely deranged!

Youtalkingtome

All completely reasonable! The beauty of this show is how complex the characters are, making most of the characters worthy of varying parts criticism and praise. Except Christopher. I loathe that guy.

Yasemin

I grew up in Europe, and I love Pippi Longstocking! In fact, as a 5-year old, I must have been singing that tune constantly on a train and annoyed other passengers LOL

Yasemin

Same here! It's not a big defense or being a "Dean apologist" to point out some nuance. :)

Yasemin

What is a "Dean apologist"? :) Things are not black and white. Just pointing out some nuance, ie, that Dean did never seem like "wanting just sex" with Rory, or as if that was his main motivation. That's all I was trying to say last week.

Yasemin

I love Luke, but he kinda acted out here a bit. Yes, he just found out about them being back together, and I get the "dad mode" part, yet at the same time, it's none of his business. Especially since Lorelai was trying so hard to make the evening work. And also, Luke had more context in the sense that he directly witnessed Dean still being in love with Rory just before he got married...

Yasemin

Oh it would be lovely to rewatch with you guys!

Onno Smits

Luke was pining for Lorelei when he married that lawyer. I think his issue with Dean is partly him having to face his own failures. Here in The Netherlands Pippi Longstocking was definitely a staple children's movie when I was a kid in the '90s.

Lindsey Swift

lol, it is, but in a good way!!! And @Yasemin, same!!!! 😆

Roland

You mean the whole town doesn't already know about Homewrecker Gilmore? Sounds unlikely to me.

Carl Wilson

Oh, they might! But it seems like Dean and Rory have been keeping on the down low since they started actually dating again, so fewer people know that.

Carl Wilson

Luke's got a dickish side that we see regularly - he's really impatient and can be very intolerant. He's usually right, whether about cellphones or Taylor or Dean, but nobody ever told him you catch more flies with honey apparently. Good thing he can be such a prince at other times.

The theater in this episode does remind me of the now defunct Pleasant Street Theater in my hometown, not as amateur as Kirk just having a screen in a basement but it was just a basement that could fit like 30 people in the downtown of a small artsy town in Massachusetts, a little bigger than Stars Hollow of about 30,000 people, not that far from where Stars Hollow is supposed to be. I saw movies like 28 Days Later or The Good Shepard for the first time there when they weren't showing in wide release at the big 12-screen Cinemark in the smaller farming town that had a big mall across the river.

dys

I also grew up on the Pippi Longstocking movies.

I grew up on the Pippi Longstocking movies as a 90s kid in the US, though I think just the English-language ones from the 80s and 90s. Looks like this is a 60s version they're watching here that never got an English translation or made it across to the US but I wonder if it's because Joe and Kevin are respectively a little after and before being 90s kids that they don't know Pippi Longstocking, or is it just unusual that I grew up with those movies as an American 90s kid.

Koko

I was surprised to hear that you've never seen Pippi Longstocking. Here in Germany that's a staple kids movie (or movies) for at least the last 40 years. In German it's called Pippi Langstrumpf. Originally it's Swedish, the book was written by Astrid Lindgren, who has written a lot of other famous children books, too. Astrid Lindgren is so connected to chidlhood here that I can't imagine growing up without her stories. Maybelike Disney in the US? Sorry for the off-topic. To make at least one comment to this episode: The moment at the end with Rory in the car and Dean outside feels always bitter sweet to me. They want everything to be like before, saying it was like in the old days. But you can see in their faces that they know, it will never be the same. AND I love the scene with Zack and Lane at Lukes.

Fun Fact: The actor who played Kyle is Squints from The Sandlot!!
