The neighbor that uncle Abe is yelling at is Larry David.

The ventriloquist on the radio they mention is Edgar Bergen (father of Candice Bergen) and his dummy Charlie McCarthy. He was actually not a great one either in film footage you can very obliviously see his lips move.

This is actually one of my favorite Woody Allen films. I love his "sentimental" movies, and this one is as sentimental as they come.

Ah! I adore this movie! I love the music from this period, and this movie features a lot of really wonderful artists. It's been a long day, so I'll have to catch up watching over the weekend, but I'm super excited to hear what you guys think! Post-watch update: I had a good feeling you’d like this one and I’m so glad you did! BTW, “They’re Either Too Young or Too Old” was indeed a real song, and it’s hilarious. 😆

As crazy as the baseball story is Jimmy Stewart starred in The Stratton Story (1949) about the baseball player Monty Stratton whose career ended when following a hunting accident his right leg was amputated. Wearing a prosthetic leg he returned to the minors following the accident playing for 7 years.

What a treat that was. I’d never heard of this film either. Such great performances and period piece. Once again, it was great watching this alongside your reactions.

Saw this in college on dollar night at the theatres near campus. Hadn't seen it since then. Interestingly, Allen's parents lived long lives. Mother died at 95, father at 100. He talked about his mother being awful to him. Found this quote online: “I remember you would hit me every day when I was a child,” Woody Allen is recorded saying to his mother in a documentary interview that is excerpted in Eric Lax’s 1991 biography of Allen. Nettie Konigsberg replies to her son, in part, “I was very strict, which I regret. Because if I hadn’t been that strict, you might have been a more, a not so impatient. . . you might have been a—what should I say? Not better. You’re a good person. But, uh, maybe softer, maybe warmer.”

In 1975 ABC released a tv movie about the War of The Worlds broadcast entitled The Night That America Panicked which you can find online at internet archive and is quite a fun watch.

It was fun to see you realize it was Woody Allen. Never saw this one just heard it was good. Even in NY suburbs, if you live in a "purple area" rather in NYC itself they stick Fox News on in the gym...that's why I would wear headphones....

All these years, I never caught W.H. Macy in that scene! Yet another! I'm telling you, Woody Allen movies are the kings of spotting pre-fame talent.....as you've already seen! Congratulations! You've now seen an unbroken chain of three Woody films: 1985, 1986, 1987. You know what it was like for us! Every year, a new movie! So one year, it's Purple Rose Of Cairo. Next year, it's Hannah And Her Sisters. The next year it's Radio Days. I think you can see why we all got addicted! This is the only Woody movie that has both Mia AND Diane in it! Mia is fantastic in this movie. She gets to do stuff in this and also Broadway Danny Rose (1984) that she never got to do in other movies. Who knew she could do accents? Who knew she could do comedy like this?

This was the first time I ever noticed that! :D

I've always wondered how people swallowed the idea of a ventriloquist on the radio.. SMH

I love the end when he talks about will we be remembered. When the movie first came out my parents remembered all of the real people and references with fondness. Today the end of the movie is ironic because we don't remember. There were so many very famous performers you didn't recognize. Singing a song he wasn't famous for, you heard what Sinatra sounded like in his radio days. You might have recognized the radio announcer in the burglary scene as Don Pardo, the original and long time announcer on SNL.

Ben Gilbert

It was a comedy show featuring his puppet characters. They also had their own comic strip. On the radio it's about the story and the comedy. People already knew the characters.

I've seen this movie dozens of times, it is my favorite of his "middle period" (late-80s early 90s) films, along with Bullets Over Broadway. I sort of fell in love with Diane Keaton while listening to her sing You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To. After all these years this was the first time I realized that Seth Green was not playing playing young Woody -- I mean he was, but it was the first time I noticed that the character in the movie was named Joe. It's easy to miss since his name is rarely used...

Fun fact Lorne Greene aka Pa on the tv show Bonanza got his start during WW2 as a newsreader for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and acquired the nickname "The Voice of Doom" due to his deep voice and the amount distressing war news he had to report.

Ben Gilbert

I misheard them and was looking for Bill Macy from Maude. 😊

I find this one of Allen's gentlest pictures... and I mean that in a good way! I enjoyed it when it first came out, but it took a few years and a couple of more viewings before I really appreciated it.
