Erin Mileur

A great movie to pair with this is Big Night (1996).

Erin Mileur

Having Oliver Platt in this movie is even better casting since him being on the Bear.

acidnova

Yay, I've been looking forward to this! Now I just wish I could watch this while eating a cubano and a beignet! Why can't movies come in Taste-O-Vision?

acidnova

Agreed! I could watch Stanley Tucci cook all day.

Stephanie Bedworth

This is a movie that I knew absolutely nothing about and didn't expect much from it but was very pleasantly surprised by it. Another chef movie I wound up loving was Today's Special, starring Aasif Mandvi.

acidnova

I love Today's Special! It's an underrated gem and I don't know anyone else who has seen it!

Seth Walker

I adore this movie. It was so clearly a therapeutic movie for Favreau after the mess that was Iron Man 2 for him. He was tired of studio interference and critical backlash so he went and made this movie and got it out of his system. What could have just been a vanity project ended being one of the sweetest movies of the year it came out. Thanks guys for watching it!

dys

One of my chef grandfather’s favorite movies.

Dannielle

This is a comfort movie for me. I always feel good after watching it

Youtalkingtome

Many people mentioned Big Night when we recently watched Babette's Feast. I would love to check it out!

Youtalkingtome

Absolutely! This is a wonderful comfort film with likeable characters you really root for.

Youtalkingtome

SO glad I ate before we watched this! It would have been brutal on an empty stomach.

I always had to have decent food with the Bear reactions too. I always get this confused with the Bradley Cooper movie Burnt that came out at the same time. I remember seeing the actual cooking show Jon made for Netflix after this.

acidnova

You guys should absolutely do a poll for movies about food!

Jonathan

The boy who played the son on this is unfortunately a n example of what actors face. He worked a lot at this age, ended up leaving acting due to lack of work during high school and then has booked good shows that all get cancelled.

That scene in Swingers is unbearable. I was begging for him to just stop. But it should be a great reaction video.

To your point...that was VERY meticulous for a grilled cheese sandwich. Now I know how Actuarial Lurker felt when Working Girl was selected. My dad was a chef, and he wasn't going to bend over if he didn't have to. Plus, there's a thing that most cooking movies get wrong, and it's that cooks eat like crap in their off hours. They don't want to cook. My dad would make anything I asked for, but if it was up to him, every dinner would be a pound of buttered noodles with 2 Top Ramen seasoning packets mixed in (that was actually pretty good).

James B.

There is an exception, in that cooks do like to show off. So the Scarlett scene makes sense. I had a friend from college over, and my dad made us baked stuffed lobster...the maniac. Haha.

The coolest thing about Cafe Du Monde was that it was like walking into a cloud of powdered sugar. The ground was powdered sugar, the tables and chairs were powdered sugar. It was unreal. This movie makes me nostalgic for the best aspects of Twitter. I loved Twitter in the before times. I'm so angry how shitty it became until it wasn't usable anymore. It's sad.

"Chef" is very much like the Cubano sandwiches in the movie: Simple yet great. The plot is not complicated, but its executed so well that you dont even notice. The music great, the acting is mostly great, the visuals are great. Its not fine dining, and its components are not overly ambitious, but it is satisfying and something you can enjoy over and over again.

Oliver Platt can never be the wrong choice for anything!

I love this movie, and I love how it's not structured like other movies. Like you guys, I kept waiting for the end of Act 2 horrible thing to happen and it was just ... nice. Also LOVE the Franklin BBQ cameo -- one of my favorite spots in Austin. And yes, those two guys were the founder and the general manager.

Skinny_Obelix

I always wondered if this movie was the metaphor of Favreau and all these star actors making a movie just because they love their craft.

Paul T Hewes

or they had some time and a good script between Marvel movies...

Stephanie Bedworth

It’s one of those movies I ran across on Prime one day and thought I’d give it a shot since I like him so much. Now it’s one of my comfort films that I’ll rewatch from time to time.

Youtalkingtome

All the way through, the food looked absolutely incredible.

Youtalkingtome

Honestly, that was my takeaway, too. It was really nice to see social media used for positive human connection here, when we all know what would eventually come of it when tech billionaires run the world.

I missed this movie when it came out, but suddenly cuban sandwiches showed up at all my favorite restaurants. One in particular made a *killer* one and I was hooked. Then I saw this movie a couple years ago and realized what had happened. :) Sometimes it's also the simplest dishes that are the most satisfying. That pasta he's making for ScarJo is Aglio e Olio, looks like he added some mushrooms as well. Delicious dish and very easy to make for yourself and a date. Also I totally agree Joe, Leguizamo is legendary! It seemed like he was in every action movie the 90s. Find a 90s action movie that didn't have Leguizamo or a character named Kowalski.

The Austin BBQ place is Franklin's. It is a Michelin star rated bbq restaurant that had lines out the door before the pandemic. Aaron Franklin is considered one of the best BBQ cooks in the world.
