Actuarial Lurker

The Scottish Play? "Oh....You mean MacBeth!"

Youtalkingtome

One of the many reasons this show is brilliant: they knew exactly the right number of times to use that joke for peak comedy.

One of my absolute favourite episodes of Blackadder. The actors are played by Kenneth Horn and Hugh Paddick, two beloved stars of British stage, radio, film and television. The taller actor is played by Hugh Paddick, who played Julian opposite Kenneth Willian's 'Sandy' in a popular radio play 'Round the Horne'. He and Kenneth Williams are largely responsible for introducing the language of Polari (used by Queer and other marginalised communities to communicate safely without fear of arrest) to the wider public. And if you understood Polari it also allowed Hugh Paddick and Kenneth Williams to slip some very crude jokes past the censors. You can hear one of the Round the Horne sketches with Julian (Hugh Paddick) and Sandy (Kennneth Williams) here: https://youtu.be/ek0C-RTh9lE?si=9RzTUa1XP-L9kYgs

The anarchist bomber was played by Ben Elton, one of the main writers. I went to one of his stand-up shows one time, at the height of his fame....and walked out midway, it was awful. Apparently a better writer in a team, than as a solo act. Or just as likely his humour just wasn't mine.

12, by my count? (Although the first 3 is just between Blackadder and Baldric, before the actors arrive.)

I saw Ben Elton and Rik Mayall in 1986, and Ben Elton was the best of the show. Rik Mayall was fantastic, but Ben Elton was just a cut above when I saw them.

You can see the joke coming and yet it is still funny every time.

I was aware of Around The Horne, but I had never heard an episode. I'd never heard of Polari, although "naff" is certainly in my toolbox! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polari Thanks for the education! I'm glad you enjoyed Ben Elton live; I remember being shocked and disappointed, I'd paid good money for the ticket.

You're very welcome. Polari is a fascinating language, it's sort of a mix of back slang, rhyming slang, Romani and Yiddish. I grew up with Australian rhyming slang (pretty much just Cockney rhyming slang with a few variations), which sadly hardly anyone here speaks anymore. Same principal around being able to talk openly and not have other people know what you're saying, unless they speak the language/dialect themselves. Maybe I struck Ben Elton on a good night. I would've been pretty unhappy if I'd spent good money and gotten a crap show as well.
