Tyler Explains It All

So, this was the very first movie I ever saw Christina Ricci in, so when she lost the pig nose in the movie as an 8-year-old child I was like, "I liked the pig nose better". Children literally have no filter lol

Honestly, I think the story is better if her nose doesn't change.

Hey, thanks for reacting to another one of my picks! I do agree with a lot of your criticisms but this movie hits a strange kind of sweet spot for me somehow, so I don't mind some of the stuff you brought up. I'm a sucker for the modern fairytale aesthetic (also why I love Pushing Daisies!). I am always conflicted about whether or not the story should have had her keep the nose or not. Mainly because, without that happening, we wouldn't have the scene with her mother afterwards actually taking a moment and reflecting on how she was also part of the problem. And then, of course, undercutting it by still suggesting plastic surgery! Although, I also choose to read it another way, in that she suggests a "turn up" so perhaps she kind of wants her daughter to sort have her old nose, again! Regardless, I think an essay could be written about Catherine O'Hara's portrayal here. Also, "rich people stink!" is always a worthwhile takeaway from a story, lol

Tyler, that's so funny! I grew up with Christina Ricci movies (she and I are close in age) so even though I was super familiar with her face, it is still jarring to see it again after spending the whole movie seeing her with a prosthetic. It's funny how that happens.

Agreed! I still haven't watched all of the show, but I do love it. The opening credits is the absolute best retro-mid-90s style credits I've ever seen. And the cast is fantastic! I won't name them in case Joe and Kevin ever get around to watching it, but there are definitely people they like on the show.

One of my all time favorites. I definitely remember it in theaters, I was hard core stalking James McAvoy’s career at this point, and I saw this multiple times in theaters. Grew up with Christina. Shout out to Peter Dinklage, Catherine O’Hara, Burn Gorman, Richard E Grant, Simon Woods, and quite a few great actors in this.

I think for the clear simplicity of the reveal to a young audience, her nose needs to change. The story is her perceived beauty standard doesn’t matter more than who she is. If her nose doesn’t change, that’s suggesting looks do matter because it would stay a part of who she is. She’s learned to look beyond all that. I don’t see Mom as learning, she’s too entrenched in beauty standards. I think it’s reminiscent of Cyrano and that his nose is actually fake. The audience is meant to be in on it. Her nose isn’t that bad to emphasize how strange it is to make such a thing of it.

Pushing Daisies is a great comp! This is a charming movie with a great cast and a script that mostly works (except for the changing of her face, IMO; if she's happy with herself, what's the point?). In fact, Barry Sonnenfeld (eho directed the PD pilot) would have been a PERFECT director for this movie, and I think it could have been an all-time banger with him at the helm. This movie is really good, but could have been great!

It's a really stellar cast. McAvoy should be a bigger star than he is today.

Did you all recognize Simon Woods? You’ve watched The 05 Pride and Prejudice right? He’s Bingley. He’s so different here of course. I don’t watch GOT so I later knew Burn Gorman as one of the (Doctor Who) Torchwood Crew. He does a lot of character parts though.

acidnova

Yeah, I also know Burn Gorman from Torchwood so it's interesting to not hear him speaking with his Welsh accent. There is definitely a range in quality of American accents from the British actors here. In my opinion, James McAvoy has the best, most natural sounding American accent with Burn Gorman and Nick Frost tied for weirdest sounding American accents.

Add-Reese is a producer on this film, that’s why she’s a small role. I always think the aesthetic is a mix of old school and contemporary society with an aristocracy. Princes William and Harry are in their early 20s at this point and popular. Yea I think Russell was just starting to be popular at this point. But agreed, ick.

I think they’re highlighting Peter’s height only as something that doesn’t define who he is. Like Johnny and his not being a blue blood. We all have our “unique” qualities.

I think the thing that makes me ok with the curse being broken is that we don't get the idea of her or her parents having the power to break the curse the whole time unless that happens. And it's significant to me that they chose to have James McAvoy kiss her while she's wearing the mask before he even knows that the curse was broken. So they drove home the idea that he loved her for who she was. If they hadn't done it like that, I would have been upset.
