The Great Red Dragon

Season 4 should've been Red Dragon, but they put it into season 3 to try and convince people to renew the show and to get a chance to tell the story, if they were cancelled. Also can't stand the movie either, to think a Ralph Fiennes, Edward Norton and Anthony Hopkins movie could be so underwhelming

The thing I appreciate the most about the way Bryan Fuller approaches adapting something like this is that he remixes the source material in such an interesting way. He pieces together something incredibly original, but by using every element of inspiration from everything that came before. All the books and all the movies contribute a shot here or a line there. Sometimes The Silence of the Lambs gets used even though it couldn't technically be used. It's something that rewards fans of the preceding versions without ever locking into strictly remaking what came before.

- I love this take on Red Dragon, especially as we've already gone through so much with these characters. We know exactly what Jack is asking Will to step back into. - That's Richard Armitage playing Francis. He's probably best known for playing Thorin in the Hobbitt movies. He was also Heinz Kruger in the first Captain America movie and the villain in Ocean's 8. He's also done a buuuuunch of British TV and is fairly well known for being the romantic lead in North and South. - The kid who plays Walter is the son of Canadian figure skater Kurt Browning. - The novel doesn't mention a knife specifically as the weapon that kills Mr. Leeds, but it does say that the mirrors were smashed *after* all of the family were dead.

Not quite halfway through, but I have two little notes I think you’d enjoy: — I always thought it would be incredibly glamorous to serve a custard out of an orange peel like Hannibal does here. Closest I ever got was with a simple Sicilian almond milk custard. It took me the longest time to place what the flavor reminded me of. Then all of the sudden it hit me - it tasted decidedly…of Froot Loop. The glamour dissipated rather quickly, lol. — Ok, so this is a minor note, but I’ve been hanging on to it for a while - As much as I like Alana, and I really do, what on earth are they doing with her style? In the first couple of seasons she made sense within the world of the show, but now she kind of looks like a hyper stylized Batman girlfriend (glam 1940’s through the lens of 90’s cartoon Batman, my favorite). I mean, it’s a fabulous look, but kind of out of place. She’s the only one doing that, and I can’t quite figure out why.

Oh wow, I’m going to have to go back and re-watch Manhunter this weekend! I definitely enjoyed it, but I feel like I don’t remember nearly enough detail at the moment. Should probably brush up on my William Blake too while I’m at it (not that I was ever an expert, but still). And you’re right (I forget the name) red-dragon-guy looks familiar from something but I can’t place him either. BTW - I was at a used bookstore a couple weeks ago and what’s the first book that I see? Red Dragon. I’m not kidding - first shelf in front of me, directly eye level. So I figure, in for a penny… I’m looking forward to seeing the original iteration of these characters… Or would it be better to start with Silence of the Lambs? I dunno, you’re the expert here, not I :)

Bonus foodie note (not that anyone wants that on this show, but stay with me a moment) - when Will opened the fridge. First, yes, the little Babybel cheeses are excellent and addictive. Second, I think the jar full of red just behind that was strawberry top vinegar — I made some literally last weekend; there’s a gallon of it in my basement right now! (Put the discarded top parts of the strawberries into a jar of vinegar for a few days, then strain. The flavored vinegar is great for salad dressings, or hell, just drizzle over vanilla ice cream - it tastes like electrified strawberry.)

Molly is played by Nina Arianda, whom I know from the excellent Goliath (starring Billy Bob Thornton)

I thought you would enjoy this episode. As much as I enjoy the Italy escapade, this was supposed to be two different seasons. There are some amazing conversations about to happen, especially when a character is reintroduced, and I can quote their words from a memory.

Like most of the viewing audience, I have the hots for Caroline Dhavernas, but that gets seriously tested by her weird wardrobe in Season 3. I wonder if maybe that was a deliberate choice, considering Alana's actual audience....

That's Throin?? No way. I didn't realize he had been in so much

That's a really good point. It does make her seem like a bit of a grandma
