LET"S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Mathilde

I get your disbelief that this would be "the best show" because it's Star Wars. I distinctly remember saying the same thing after every episode on my first watch: "This has no right to be this good, it's Star Wars!" We'd never been fed this level of quality, depth or intelligence in this universe before!

Neill Shaughness

This is the episode I realized without a shadow of a doubt I was watching a masterpiece. In a show full of brilliant monologues, one of the most powerful moments is a simple "Never more than 12" This show celebrates the smallest of victories, in this case simply getting another person, someone you need help from to shift their perspective into one of resistance feels as big as the Aldani raid. Brilliant writing

Bix knows who Luthen is, but they did not address themselves with names when they met on Ferrix in Episode 3. But if they talked at least 6 times before, she must know at least a name for "Axis". The awful torture she goes through notwithstanding, the visual cut with the door closing down is a direct pull from the movies (Episode IV: A New Hope) when Leia is going to be tortured by Vader with a needle in her cell!

Suzanne Whyte

Cyril meets Dedre once while she interrogates him and he thinks he knows her and imagines some deep connection between the two off them based off their two minute meeting. He then lies in wait for her to force a meeting and convince her of this imaginary connection. He is such a creepy stalker and he has no restraint when he is convinced of something. His behaviour is definitely going to escalate.

someone may have told you this but there is an easily missed after credits scene on the last episode of the season.

The trustee doctor is such a direct link to concentration camps during WWII. Nurses (and even some doctors) in Auschwitz were also trustees. If a woman was giving birth, both infant and mother were sent to the gas chamber, unless it was stillborn. They actually managed to "fake" the children's death sometimes, and some of them got out that way. Book source: Five Chimneys, by Olga Lengyel. Same thing with Kino Loy (Andy Serkis' character). The foremen were also trustees in Auschwitz, and they were instrumental in the uprising by having knowledge about the structure and guards deployment in the camp. The "Never more than 12..." is exactly that.

Lola Lirola

Same!! I got chills at "Never more than 12" and knew this was different. The prison trilogy of episodes is my favorite of the show. Such an incredibly thrilling note to end the episode. These people have nothing to lose.

Neill Shaughness

It's definitely my favorite arcof S1 (the third arc of S2 beat it for me). I don't think the ending of this episode gets talked about enough. It's such an important small victory that sets the foundation for the next episode

Lola Lirola

Cyril is honestly my favorite prissy b*tch psycho character in ages. I think since Joffrey in GoT. I mean, different flavors, but I love it when a well-written villain lands on the hands of a great actor having fun with it.

Lola Lirola

I'm gonna be super blasphemous and say Last Jedi tried to approach this and the powers that be didn't let it land the message, but absolutely agree with you that this is absolutely the best Star Wars, no doubt.

Lola Lirola

Absolutely! I haven't gotten round to watch Season 2 yet, because life got messy when it was airing, so it will be a new watch for me along them here, and I really can't wait!! You're right. The changing of a mind. That's such an important goal to achieve, and I think honestly the entire show is built around that idea. Making Cassian go from petty street rat to who he is in Rogue One. And this was like a small-scale version of it, and it's so exhilarating! Truly my favorite ending of an episode (again, season 1 only, at least).

Neill Shaughness

Axis is the designation the Imperials gave Luthen, she only refers to him as "the buyer" to Andor and given how cautious Luthen is, I doubt he ever gave her a name that would lead back to him.

dys

Seems like you guys always saw Dedra for what she really is. Yes she was always fully on board with the Empire, but for me it was easier to be somewhat sympathetic to her as the competent voice of (a kind of) reason within an incompetent bureaucracy. Until this episode when we're forcibly reminded just what her being so on board means she'll do, she cares about the Empire being *effective*, not it being *good*.

Paul T Hewes

Syril, at this point, is a simp. A simp for order. A simp for power. A simp for strict structure. He sees all that in Dedra, or at least he thinks he does. He's simp for these things has easily mingled with his repressed desires.

Paul T Hewes

-Dedra, has what my wife has designated "Resting Imperial Face" -Dr. Gorsts Child Genocide Torture device is among the sickest thing I have ever come across. -How easily the ISB just says "Kill them" is very evil. -The med-tech in prison was in Chernobyl and played Harry Potter's dad in the films...

Paul T Hewes

the whole of the sequels was a mess. no plan, no one to enforce a story. wasted several good actors.

John Marnell

1) Season 1 has a post-credits scene, so be ready for that after episode 12 2) If either of you are gamers, check out Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Serkis is among the voice cast which is universally marvelous top to bottom. The whole game is a marvel in every regard.

james repka

Denise Gough has said in interviews that she had spent much of her career trying to maintain a smile for casting directors, producers, etc. on the advice of her mother, who would always remind her of her "resting b***h face." She was happy to finally be able tell her mother to lay off, her RBF got her a great part in a great series.

james repka

Agreement here. The Last Jedi tried to pull off two things that had never been dealt with in the SW Universe except in Rogue One (released the year before The Last Jedi): 1. It was a story that acknowledged the plight of everyday citizens of the Republic/Empire that are totally lost in the main "trilogy of trilogies." 2. It suggested, following up on R1, that there were heroes behind the heroes. Secret force users who weren't directly related to the Skywalkers (Rey was one, until the fan-based uproar caused JJ Abrams to spackle over her origin story to make Palpatine her grandfather/great-grandfather?

james repka

Can't remember whether anyone's said this here so I will. The end of episode 12, the end of season 1, has a post-credit scene. You may have heard this already, I just wanted to make sure you won't miss it.

Michael Bennett

Episode trivia: The actor playing the prison doc, Adrian Rawlins, also played James Potter (Harry's dad). Check out the shot of the door closing on Bix being interrogated, it's a perfect match to Leia being interrogated by the floating droid in A New Hope. :) The escalation really is the downfall of the Empire. Everything they do recruits more allies for the Rebellion, even in the smallest ways. Cassian himself wasn't even fully on board for the heist, he just wanted enough money to pay his debts and get out of Ferrix, then a random stormtrooper sent him to prison for 6 years for walking on the beach. Now they've managed to recruit Kino by frying an entire floor to cover up their screwup.

Shawn Looney

I hate myself for routing for Dedre's character somehow.

Roland

Luthen admitted that he screwed up by revealing more of his identity to Cassian than he intended. He would definitely have been careful with Bix.

GDF

With all of the deaths in Star Wars from blasters, and lightsabres and planet destroying lasers, this one part of Star Wars where an old man dies of something real like a stroke after being worked to death in some sick torture prison hits very hard. I love Jedi and Sith and that kind of Star Wars and want more stuff with them but I also enjoy that we have this one show that peels all the mystical whimsy layer back and goes, "You've seen Vadar and the Empire and their stuff and maybe it looks cool. But for ordinary people here's what actual Fascism is like to live under. It is evil and horrifying."

GDF

We're so far removed from Palpatine and Darth Vader you kind of forget that it's a evil magical Sith Lord who is the dictator. Because it kind of doesn't matter at all that he is. He doesn't need to use his powers because he has this whole Fascist Apparatus to do his bidding for him and that's the only thing our characters who aren't heroes interact with. Humans have never need Dark Side powers to oppress other humans which is kind of the social commentary of the show. Dedra is just an ordinary woman with police goons going around torturing people. It happens in our world, not just in some sci fi with evil Wizards. And that's what makes this accessible to non-Star Wars fan too, and why it's an amazing show, not just an amazing Star Wars show.

Youtalkingtome

We will definitely hold E12 for the post-credit scene. Thanks!

Youtalkingtome

Competence is a quality to root for, so I kind of get it. But she is the devil.

Youtalkingtome

Great observations. I love how this show leans into the politics more than the heavily used Jedi / Sith lore.

Youtalkingtome

Well said. It's such a cool moment. I cannot wait to see next weeks episode
