Omg I don’t have time now but I will be back to watch. Such a movie!

Days late and I am aware this is annoying, but I am constitutionally incapable of not responding to comments about the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. (That and complaints of the use of the word "like". Both immediately propel me onto my linguistic anthropology soap box.) Not a criticism of anyone in the comments who suggested otherwise because pretty much no one is aware of this unless they've read a bunch of Whorf's writing (which most don't because it isn't very accessible), but just want to point out that the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis hasn't been so much discredited as it is a strawman position that never really existed in the first place. Whorf was one of Sapir's students, but they never wrote together and certainly never staked out any sort of hypotheses. In his work on Hopi grammatical structures, Whorf does make some decently strong claims about links between Hopi grammatical structures and how time is conceptualized, but the idea that "Hopi have no idea of time", which is the claim that has been largely disproven (and then used to subsequently disprove the broader idea of linguistic relativity), was never what Whorf argued in the first place--and also his actual argument was still not as strongly deterministic as people make linguistic relativity out to be. While it's not my specific research area, what people call the "weak" version of the hypothesis (that language--particularly grammatical structures--can influence how people understand and experience their world) is still widely engaged with by linguistic anthropologists, cognitive linguistics, and others. Okay, sorry for the mini-lecture! Fantastic movie, fantastic reaction, and so fun to see linguistic relativity pushed to a fantastical sci-fi extreme. Ted Chiang is brilliant.

Love this film. It's just as good on repeat watching I think even knowing the reveal.
