Read Hollywood, Bukowski's novelization of the making of this film. Sean Penn desperately wanted to play Hank, but he insisted that Dennis Hopper direct it. But Bukowski promised Barbet Schroeder that he could direct it.

David Adler

It's west central Los Angeles.

The last guy at the Kenmore that Hank passes on his first walk toward Wanda is none other than Charles Bukowski himself.

A coworker of my former roommate who wanted to be a writer idolized Charles Bukowski. He was a troubled young man who drank too much and I hope he got his life straightened up. I lost touch after I moved from Atlanta 30 years ago.

Oh my god!!!! A movie I've always wanted to see a reaction to! Movies like this is why I'm subscribed! Cannot believe it! I just woke up, and already you've changed my plans for the next two hours! :P LOVE YOU GUYS! Great channel you got here!

Hilarious book!

Yeah, Bukowski is kinda the Keith Richards, or Charlie Parker of writers. His followers don't just imitate his talent, they imitate his lifestyle.

Youtalkingtome

I hope so too. I don't see idolizing this lifestyle at all. I think the writing is beautiful and moving but this is not my world.

Youtalkingtome

Thank you and thanks again to David for picking such a great movie

Youtalkingtome

I would love to. I can see Sean Penn in this role but Rourke really did something special here

Also check out his novel Post Office, about his years at the USPS.

One thing I've noticed - but especially in this movie: these subtitles, they're always wrong! And with this Barfly......it was particularly bad! Sometimes they had question marks when they couldn't make out what the dialog was. Even though the dialog was clear to the ear - when you take into account "ums" and "uhs". Very weird! Do you guys use the subtitles or are they for the reactions? It's fine with me if you choose NOT to use the subtitles! /// Great reaction, loved revisiting this! My favorite Mickey Rourke performance, bar none. And I put this right after Bonnie And Clyde, Chinatown, and Network for Faye Dunaway. Probably her most understated and unglamorous performance.

So my father, who would now be a century old, acted in a spiritual predessisor to this film. Called ON THE NICKEL, original title song by a very young Tom Waits. My pops is the drunk at the 34 second mark, telling off Donald Moffat. I was on set for a few days, wandering around Skidrow for hours. ☮️💟👊https://youtu.be/wdCkM-b4r2c?si=ejZsuNlAAT226IUW
