Suzanne Whyte

I see Willow is getting over her fears of the basement. Nice of her to visit.

This episode felt like a transition episode. It seems like they’re setting up some new story lines.

I think the grey is toxic but as long as you don't have continued exposure you are fine. Kind of like worse version of riot gas. Can also think back to Silko using a form of it, talking about how it was before. Presumably before Caitlyn's mother had the ducts built to make the air better. Silko uses it to prove a point and asset control. Caitlyn uses it for crowd control and cover when they do their raids. These are great episodes, but this is where I feel we start seeing plot needs override character development. I also think this season was mostly written under a writers strike?

The ending with Caitlyn (pre-Singed) always gives me chill, goddamn. The build-up with the music, the artistic direction. It's incredible.

Yeah, for me, this episode is where this season starts to really diverge from the first in terms of what I found so special about the first season - its incredible economy of storytelling. The first season is a miracle because it packs an unbelievable amount of character, plot, and themes into nine episodes without ever once feeling confusing. Every character's motivations are perfectly clear at all times (someone once pointed out that almost nobody in Arcane Season 1 actually lies outright - the tension comes from the viewer not being certain which story is true). The writers just did an immaculate job of having every plot thread pull on two or three or four or ten different character arcs, and constructed character dualities that made every interaction feel like story progression even if it was, on its surface, a light joke or a bit of exposition. This first third of Season 2, IMO, has many of the elements that made Season 1 great. The characters are still complex, well-motivated, and fleshed out. The themes are very much there. The art design and music are still gorgeous - arguably even more so. But the perfectly constructed narrative web that was the first season, here instead feels... overstuffed. There's just SO MUCH they're trying to do here, all at once, that you get a lot more telling rather than showing, and quick cutting between scenes that feel disconnected from each other. If Season 1 was a perfectly calibrated Swiss watch, Season 2 feels like a Formula 1 race car - powerful, dynamic, but seemingly ready to fly itself apart at any moment. I think it's clearest here with all the stuff around the Grey, which Kevin understandably found somewhat confusing. They basically tuck all the exposition around what the Grey is into the opening musical montage (plus a bit of dialogue from the previous episode), but there's not enough connective tissue to make it 100% plain that Caitlin's entire plan here was to weaponize the Grey as a space/crowd control tool against the Zaunites. Nor is it clear enough during the big climax that Jinx's scheme was to essentially reverse that - to turn Caitlin's new chemical weapon against her own citizens as a means of equalizing the odds. Same problem, IMO, with the Jayce/Ekko stuff around the Hexgate and the wild rune. Very cool ideas, and the idea of Piltover diverting all the danger of the Hexgates to the Undercity is perfectly illustrative of why Piltover is (or at least should be seen as) ultimately the bad guy in all of this. But the actual scenes end up feeling very stilted and expository, in a way that the first season never did. I do think, as in the last episode, that the Jinx/Vi stuff still works beautifully here. And the Vi/Caitlyn relationship (and implosion thereof) is handled better here than in the first episode of the season. As I said, the strengths of the series are very much still present in this second season. They just got overambitious and couldn't figure out how to stuff everything they wanted to do in the limited time and space they were given.
