Holy shit, I've been refreshing the page all week for this. I thought you guys were gonna wait for the weekend!

Michelle Taylor

I think you guys are both stand-up guys, but in this case, you’re very naïve. First off, this movie took place in 1991, and even today women do not get justice. Thelma was seen drinking and dancing with this idiot. She willingly walked out with this guy. They’re not from this town, and the good old boys aren’t going to blame the man. What do they say? Men don’t need any proof to believe a woman’s a slut, but there’s no proof to make them believe she was raped. You should watch the movie "Promising Young Woman" from 2020.

Lola Lirola

Man, Brad Pitt built his entire career upon the foundation of that one pan up his torso in this movie. The belly button that launched a thousand film reels. Pity he turned out to be a bad dude.

Courtney

I’ve seen this movie probably 10 times, and I should have something more profound to say about my pick, but I’ll just say my mom rented this for us when I was 8 or 9. The minute Brad showed up at that hotel, she sent me to the kitchen for popcorn. And soda. And make a charcuterie board please. No, you can’t come out of the kitchen yet! She knew leading man sex appeal when she saw it, lol. And I was very confused.

Pam Nail

We also hear enough about the Texas incident to more than understand why Louise wouldn't trust the system.

Michelle Taylor

It is interesting to note that Gina Davis initially selected Brad Pitt, only to later realize she had chosen him over George Clooney.

JENNIFER E

Brad Pitt's debut in this film rewired everyone's brain chemistry in the 90s.

Michelle Taylor

Proof they couldn’t turn themselves in. Chrystul Kizer was sentenced to 11 years in prison for the reckless homicide of her trafficker.A similar high-profile case is Cyntoia Brown, who was sentenced to life in prison at 16 for killing a man who bought her for sex, though her sentence was later commuted and she was freed in 2019. How many men have been prosecuted from the Epstein files?

san

tbf I think Pitt suits this specific character way more

Hi! I haven't had a chance to watch yet and I may not get to it for a few days but I wanted to add some interesting info. So if anyone is familiar with the music of Tori Amos, there is a connection to this movie. She had been assaulted when she was young and starting her career in LA. Years later, she saw Thelma and Louise and it acted as a trigger for her to finally start opening up about what happened to her. This led to her writing the song "Me and a Gun" based on that experience and it was included in her debut album "Little Earthquakes." She started getting letters from fans as well as speaking with them about their own experiences and this eventually led to her participation with RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network) which works as a hotline to help people be directed to local resources. She raised money for the organization and did a lot to bring attention to their work and to the issues. So, in an indirect way, this movie has led to more awareness and more resources for those who need it.

Cristy

Courtney, thank you! I can't wait to watch this with the guys, can't believe they've never seen it.

Courtney

I remember not long after this came out (‘93) my mom took me out to lunch and bought me a necklace after getting my first period. Yeah, it wasn’t just a necklace, it had a hidden whistle and alarm in it. We had a whole conversation about how things were probably going to change for me and I couldn’t necessarily count on the police. Culturally I feel like it was just understood. I wish Joe and Kevin were right that self defense could have worked, but I look at some of the high profile cases this century (Brock Turner, Audrie Pott) and I think very little has changed at all since this movie came out .

Pam Nail

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I love the ending. People have complained about it for years, but it's a classic western/outlaw movie ending. The women make a lot of bad decisions in this movie, but I think they're mostly understandable ones. Thelma got married at 18 and has never been anywhere without her husband, so she doesn't have the same danger detectors Louise does. Louise has a huge trauma in her past she seems to have a good reason (at least in her own mind) not to trust law enforcement. Callie Khouri won an Oscar for this screenplay -- her first produced screenplay. It was also nominated for Director, Cinematography, and Editing, and Sarandon and Davis were both nominated for Best Actress.

ScarlettMi

They were in Arkansas when the film started. Considering how many women are punished to this day for defending themselves in an immediate life-or-death situation, I don't think Louise was wrong to not have faith that the justice system would suddenly work for her. It didn't work for her in Texas. That a bunch of cops were going to suddenly overlook that she shot Harlan from several feet away after they'd gotten away from him was bad odds. That people wouldn't blame Thelma for drinking and "leading him on" was bad odds. Louise's reaction might not have been the text book "good" response but I think it made a lot of sense for her character. I may hate JD for stealing from them, but I do appreciate him for rubbing it in Darryl's face that he slept with Thelma. That and giving Thelma a bunch of orgasms are his redeeming qualities.

Nick Stark

What a treat. I was hoping this was gunna be downloaded on my birthday. And it was. I’ve been looking forward to watching this reaction. Thanks guys.

ScarlettMi

That ending you read about was not real and was not filmed. This was always the original ending that was written. There is a slightly extended bit of 20-30 seconds of footage where Keitel's character is looking over the edge of the cliff and picks up the Polaroid picture that blew out of their car. It was never used in a release of the film and appeared with some deleted footage in DVD extras.

danzthename

Tori Amos is an amazing woman! What a talent

ScarlettMi

Clooney is certainly charming, and he actually plays a really sexy and charismatic robber at times, but this particular character really feels like Brad was the right casting.

Chemical Em

there is no justice for the rape of women if anything it is worse rarely is there a conviction and even when there is the perpetrator never sees any jail time or consequences- (a few examples: the recent French case for a decade a wife was drugged and raped by her husband and 51 strange men and many other men saw what was happening online and didn't contact police, they had to surgically remove her tampon after connor macgregor was finished, Armie hammer is recently in new movie . . . and so on . . . ) driving off the cliff seems like a very reasonable response to a world that doesn't care about women

Jonathan

Brad Pitt made the rounds playing teenage boyfriends on various tv shows in the 80s. His most visible role before this was a 4 episode stint on Dallas. His next movie was his first critical acclaim role in Redford’s A River Runs Through it.

Jonathan

Sadly Ridley Scott hasn’t had a good movie in 10 years but I blame a lot of that on who he chooses as a writer. When Tony passed away he and Ridley were producing The Good Wife one of the last top quality dramas to air on network tv.

Nick Stark

Great reaction to this iconic film. The end scene that I saw that was originally planned was an extension of their car falling in the canyon. It was quite graphic. The car was basically upside down in the air just before crashing. It was later decided to be way too depressing. (Clip below) https://youtube.com/shorts/hGOrSqj1q7Y?is=rMQpbGstw8USksGT

the disgusting comments from the truck driver are significant as they demonstrate rape culture that women are expected to deal with as 'jokes' through the normalisation (it happens all the time) and casual remarks (captain muff diver) it erodes the humanisation of women which allows the perpetration of violence. Rude comments like these from men are about domination, intimidation and control

Gail Hislop

At least 16 Sheriff’s with high powered rifles to bring in 2 women with hand guns - ‘this is standard’ says FBI dude played by Stephen Tobolowsky !!! How many times are these woman gonna be fucked over 😢 I would have chosen to drive off the cliff too. As Butch Cassidy said ‘The falls gonna kill you.’

Suzanne Whyte

The Netflix miniseries Unbelievable would also be a good watch. It’s a tough watch but it’s worth watching. It also has a very strong cast.

Ashley Thomas

i love this movie. i watched it a lot in middle school (stunning parental supervision in the 90s) in thelmas defense i would have slept with brad pitt too. but i would not have left him in the room alone, left him around the money, or told him where i was going. but she had been with her husband since she was 14 and never been anywhere. she had no street smarts or life skills really beyond being a housewife. as far as if they should have gone to the cops...no. louise would have gone to jail. she wasnt even the one being raped. and rape is rarely prosecuted. and this was the early 90s (you can tell by all that stunning demin everywhere haha) when i was 12, a couple years after this came out, i took a self defense class. the first thing they told us was yell fire, if you yell help or rape no one will care, no one will come. i went to the cops once. the DA told me that the guy took a picture of me and i was smiling, that he said i said yes, so they werent going to pursue the case. i may have loudly informed him in a public lobby that men who cant get hard till the girl starts crying and screaming dont just do it once. but im a subtle little lady like that. my 16 year old daughter has been grabbed off the sidewalk twice in the last year by men. you are lucky you dont know what its like out there. i have never felt safe out alone in my life. anyways, the cast in this movie is great. they all did their roles so well. im a huge susan sarandon fan always. but everyone killed it. and i love madsen as jimmy, but still, when i see him i think of him dancing around in reservoir dogs. and no, brad pitt did a few movies between this and vampire, including cool world, true romance, and most notably a river runs through it, which is so beautifully done.

Ashley Thomas

you have to watch 12 monkeys! its so good! sound slike you havent seen a lot of brad pitt movies, hes really a vary good actor. maybe you should do a pitt poll.

trenton gragg

The first two actresses cast in the leads were Michelle Pfeiffer and Jodie Foster. They both had to dropout due to scheduling conflicts, Pfeiffer with Love Field (Oscar nominated role) and Foster with Silence of the Lambs. Foster won her Oscar up against Davis and Sarandon nominated for Thelma and Louise. The next casting was Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn, but they had scheduling conflicts and salary disputes had them dropout. They would later costar in Death Becomes Her in 1992.

Lola Lirola

This movie always felt so *~American~* to me. On the level of exotic cinema, seen from here. The landscapes in this movie are so incredible. And the colors, the people... Even the diners and dives bars and signage. Just quintessential Americana. It reminds me of the first time I ever visited the US and everything had an almost surreal tint of being "just like the movies".

Lola Lirola

It's quite fascinating how you guys experienced the movie as a sort of "tragedy of errors", where you kept wanting to support them as traditional heroes and kept being disappointed that their decisions weren't completely logical. That journey is one of frustration and despair. But I think for most women, this is a Liberation movie. It's a movie that lays bare how the system is rigged against women, and when any rational outcome is horrible, then might as well blow it all up and go wild. That journey is exhilarating. Think about it, none of the men, and I mean absolutely none, offer a good life to these women: Darryl (hilarious, I love it when an actor can play insufferable with gusto) offers Thelma a life of neglect, isolation, control, cheating and boredom. Jimmy, who seems not that bad, only has grand gestures because he sees he's gonna lose Louise. Otherwise, he's not sure if he actually loves her, and he has a violent streak when he gets frustrated. He's been stringing Louise around, not wanting to commit, and only buys a ring when she asserts her independence. Harlan... Well, he's the worst of them, and deserved what he got. JD, the Brad Pitt character, at least helps Thelma connect to her wild side, but they can't even trust a good time. Every man has taken things away from them. The policeman wanted to abuse them, even before he was going to find out they were wanted fugitives, he was getting off on being all authoritarian and aggressive. And the trucker was such a gross dude. Catcalling is never about trying to see if it works! It's always done to make you uneasy, to remind you that they have power. It's done to remind women of their place as objects. And then the detective played by Harvey Keitel... Well, he seems like the best dude. And he probably is. But the best he can offer them is a life of imprisonment. Every single male character in the movie is trying to rob some part of women's freedom. So the movie is a fantasy of liberation. Of just doing away with all of it. It's a "fuck it" movie! And of course, it cannot be realized, so it ends in tragedy. But seriously, for most women, after the harrowing parking lot scene, this movie tends to be more exhilarating than frustrating. So it was very interesting to see how you experienced it!

Lola Lirola

Yeah, I think the same. So interesting that it could have been Clooney!! I think he has too much gravitas to play a petty thief asshole like that, so Pitt was the better casting indeed.

Lola Lirola

Yeah, I remember when he was crowned Redford's successor because of River Runs... I think by the time he did Interview with the Vampire, he was already a well established heartthrob, no? Was Legends of the Fall (his Fabioest movie! my sister and I always laugh that his mane does half the acting in that movie) before or after Interview?

Lola Lirola

Those would have been tremendous pairings as well. Can you imagine? But I'm glad we got this one, because it just means more iconic ladies, not always Meryl for everything! 😅

Courtney

I love that you mentioned the Americana aspect of this film . I grew up in rural 80s/90s going on a lot of car trips, and there’s a lot of nostalgia mixed in here for me (hit me up for line dancing lessons anytime, Joe and Kevin! 😂) And yes the landscapes are so gorgeous. The part where they’re quietly driving at night with the Ballad of Lucy Jordan in the background is just beautiful and makes me a little emotional-the song definitely brings some themes out.

Youtalkingtome

None of what anybody is saying is wrong to me. I blame myself for not communicating well, especially throughout the movie. I was expressing how much I wanted the pair to get away with the shooting, which sounded like frustration with the characters. The movie did a great job of showing varying parasitic roles men play in women's lives, which had me expressing my desire for them to break their connections to all of these men. I feel like we touched a little bit on that in the wrap-up, but cleanly not enough. This was a wonderful movie that explores the roles women are forced to play for men in America, and I look forward to checking it out again on rewatch this week.

Lola Lirola

That makes sense! I don't think you were wrong, especially in the wrap-up, I did see you both "got it" a lot more than it seemed. I was writing my comment while I watched, and then posted it anyway, but I did notice you actually made a lot of the same points with regards to Jimmy, for example, and about how "this is what happens when women don't have options", as you said. It's interesting because I think it was all a matter of the angle of approach? If that makes sense? Something similar happened whit a friend of mine watching Silence of the Lambs, because he had heard all the legend about Hannibal Lectern, so he spent the whole movie expecting him to try to kill Clarice as the antagonist? And the movie is not that at all, so he kept kinda trying to watch a different movie than the one he was actually watching? But yeah, this movie struck a chord with so many women who felt those patriarchal traps and constraints very tangibly. They became referents for a reason! It inspired Geena Davis to found her Institute of Film Research! Because the movie was supposed to "change everything" for women-led movies in Hollywood... and then it never could. Kind of like when Barbie broke every single record, and everyone took the wrong lesson from it and tried to make you franchises. Thirty years later, and things haven't changed! 😅

Lola Lirola

So true. That Lucy Jordan scene is so moving!

Brandon

In some of his early roles like A River Runs Through It, Legends of the Fall and Interview With The Vampire I think he was kind of miscast as a mopey, sensitive mannequin. It sort of felt for a while in the 90's like only the Scott's, Gilliam and Fincher got that he was funny.

Kirsten Stewart

It’s always interesting how differently the viewing experience is for this movie for men than it is for women. You guys have proven yourselves to be thoughtful, empathetic people, however, you’re still going to see things through a male lens, can’t be helped. Sadly today, it still holds true, but especially back in the era in which this story is told, going to the police most often led to either not being believed, and if believed, victimised all over again by the justice system. This was the case tenfold if a woman had any prior positive interaction with her attacker. Thanks for a great reaction to a classic film particularly among women - such great performances from Susan and Geena and a liberating, relatable movie!!

Never saw this film despite knowing the infamous ending...finally have some time to watch it with you guys....doing some catch up....

Actuarial Lurker

Kevin- disagree that they could just toss the gum. If I understand correctly all firearms are test fired prior to sale so the ballistics om the bullet could trace back to the husband's gun...I could be wrong

Actuarial Lurker

As a male- seeing the film "The Accused" in 1986 with Jodie Foster at age 20 while still in college sort of brought home the risk assymetry In the mid-1980s, a male friend "Louie" (Greek guy from Athens) and hall-mate of mine in college worked campus security on the overnight shift at the dorms to earn money while studying. His job was checking IDs so strange (mostly drunk) young men wouldn't wander into our coed dorms unless they were residents of that building. I remember volunteering to be part of the female student led "Take Back the Night" movement co-sponsored by the Feminist group and campus police- Louie and I (and many other guys who volunteered would walk women back to their dorms from the campus library, or from the 7-11 right near the LIRR train station that was on the side of our campus... Back then there were 10-20 SA's each school year on our campus, even with a 21 year old drinking age and lots of "commuters" who left for home on weekends....you could see the relief on the faces of these women I went to school with knowing that a couple of guys who could each bench 200+ lbs were escorting them home...In Greece they have mandatory military service so before coming to the US to study, my friend had gone through basic training and then infantry training...so I guess we must have scared the $hit out of people who walked by on the half mile deserted stretch that led to the area where many of the freshman dorms were located when we were doing "protective patrols"...at least NOW they have lighting, emergency phones and campus police patrols on this stretch of pathways.... I think sex crimes should be met with the death penalty despite being my super lib self... As my wife who worked with SVU crimes during her forensics career said to me when we were first dating- "Good men in society reap the "benefit" of fear and subjugation that the bad men in society instill in all women". She told me that the rate of misogyny in the press, sex crimes in general, and number of active serial killers has been highly correlated with periods of female empowerment- i.e. sexual violence being used to "keep women in their place" when they appear to be gaining too much societal power. Lo and behold we have a female run for President in 2016 and serve as VP in 2021-2025 and SCOTUS guts Roe v Wade and now the SAVE Act to try to make it harder for women who have changed their names at marriage to vote if this were to pass...

Youtalkingtome

I really liked the ending too. This whole movie has been on my mind for days now

Youtalkingtome

That's amazing that a movie could do that for someone. Incredible

Youtalkingtome

Here we are all these years later and he's still taking his shirt off!

Youtalkingtome

I don't know why I thought this was his big break. Madsen really could have been at the top of Hollywood. He steals Reservoir Dogs. Susan Sarandon is an absolute treasure

Youtalkingtome

You're absolutely right. It's an amazing piece of Americana. Kinda funny that it's directed by a Brit! He's one of the finest directors thats ever lived so I'll take it

Youtalkingtome

What an interesting sliding doors that would have been

Youtalkingtome

I'd like to see that. I know that the Criterion put out a Blu Ray for this film and I really wanna pick it up

Youtalkingtome

You're absolutely right. Thanks for watching with us

Youtalkingtome

I've never seen Dallas but it seems like a lot of fun

Youtalkingtome

I love Butch and Sundance. This feels like a true companion piece to it

Youtalkingtome

He's had so many hits and misses. The Martian was an all time classic. I'm really glad we got to watch that here with you guys

Nannette

Specifically on that topic, I want you guys to watch the mini series "Unbelievable" which is based on some (unfortunately) really true stories.
