This is such a memorable movie from my 20’s. Haven’t seen it in many, many years though. Should be a fun time watching it alongside your reactions. One of the funniest scenes for sure. Making out in front of Jesus (scene below) https://youtu.be/SAWm5lLfGZ0?is=5_qcLQsO7gNjtPyN

Happy Sunday to me! Thanks for always picking the good movies, Kate.

This was a rather sweet movie! Annabeth Gish was wonderful! The main thing I remember her from is The West Wing but she really nailed the role of Kat!

My pleasure! Have to keep these great movies alive! ♥

This is where I grew up, and where we raised our son. It made me so homesick to see downtown and the drawbridge, and all of the beautiful shots of the water. and all the boats. My father has always had a boat of some kind, my whole life. So many memories of watching 4th of July fireworks from the boat, and taking our summer trips to Newport and Martha's Vineyard. I used to get so seasick sleeping on the boat. I'd have to sneak out of my room, go upstairs, and curl up in the captain's chair where I could see the horizon, then I was fine! LOL! Such a beautiful place! I love it so much, and I miss it terribly! My best friend has her salon across the street from Mystic Pizza! Yes, it's a real restaurant, and still open for business! My Uncle Brian was actually in this movie. He was one of the extras sitting at the bar at The Peg Leg Pub, at the beginning of the movie when Daisy was playing pool with Charlie! This movie is so nostalgic for me. I feel like I'm a little bit of all three girls... they all had good intensions, although sometimes very misguided, their heart was always in the right place... for the most part! Hahahaaaa! So glad you guys liked the movie! CT really is a beautiful place! You should definitely go, if you get the chance!

Oh, and Vincent D'Onofrio has a small role in an upcoming film on your list... lets see if you can locate him! And yes, he's a very good looking man!!

Erin Mileur

The two yuppies who come into the bar look like charter members of FWCCA (Future White Collar Criminals of America).

Thank you indeed, Kate. Seeing this purchase reminded me I could pick fun beloved movies from my childhood and not just 'cinema.' So I immediately purchased Adventures in Babysitting.

Lots of wealthy preppy people in that area... everywhere you look! The turtleneck with a button down shirt, AND a blazer?!?!?! Unless he was wearing a dickie... that's just creepy, more like Dateline: To Catch a Predator!

When my grandparents passed away, my family was cleaning out the house and figuring out who wanted what items. I was 10 years old and my cousins were 15, 17, and 20. One was in college and one was heading to college shortly. My very Catholic grandparents had a Sacred Heart of Jesus picture hanging over their bed, the kind where the eyes followed you around the room. My aunt suggested that my 17 year old cousin, Jack, take the picture for his future dorm room. My cousins all giggled, but she was perfectly serious. I finally said, "no one wants to bring a girl back to their dorm room with the Jesus eyes watching you, Aunt Maureen!" My cousins were like, "even this 10 year old gets it!"

LOVE that movie! So excited to see what the guys think of it... Thor is my favorite! LOL! I'm sure I would have added it at some point. So many movies still to share! My next one is Turner & Hooch (1989)!

Youtalkingtome

I thought the place was beautiful! I definitely need to take a trip up the NE coast.

Youtalkingtome

For real, the guy in the turtleneck - button-up - blazer trio ensemble is definitely a serial killer.

Youtalkingtome

I mean, right?? That glowing Jesus bust looked really judgmental, too.

Back at ya! I'm having so much fun with these movies and tv series! It's a great community you've assembled!

fire12wife

Either that or his future wife or girlfriend killed him for how he speaks to women, speaks about women, and treats women! He was an ass!

fire12wife

it looked like an old '70s outdoor Christmas decoration that they leave, all lit up in their living room, all year long! lol!

You'll love it, I promise! So many things to do and see... the beaches and the lighthouses are my favorite. You get the most stunning views!

If you ever make it to Cape Cod, lobster rolls on me!

I’m very curious Kevin as to why the title Mystic Pizza made you think it might be Musical Comedy genre ?? This is one of my favourite movies from this era. I loved Annabeth Gish and it was so lovely to see her years later in West Wing. This was Julia’s first film at just 21 and then she did Steel Magnolias the following year, which she won a Golden Globe Award for as Supporting Actress. Then a year after that came Pretty Woman. The scene with her by the side of the road when the Porsche has broken down is so fun and has shades of what she will be as Vivian in Pretty Woman. Her character in this is kind of sad as she only sees her future in Mystic is pretty dead end unless a rich husband will get her out of there.

Youtalkingtome

You can absolutely tell she's gunna be a star. She really stole this movie

Carl Wilson

Always meant to see this and never did, so thanks for providing the occasion! I only really knew Annabeth Gish from the X-Files, but I thought she was wonderful in this. And Julia Roberts kind of becomes Julia Roberts before our eyes from the start to the end of this film, doesn't she, gaining that confidence and star power, while starting off seeming like she's in kind of a thankless role. And I've always just loved Liv Taylor anytime anywhere.

Enjoyed your commentary, as ever!Mystic Pizza is one of my favorite movies. Wonderful story, superb cast! I'm not convinced that Julia Roberts earned the Oscar for best actress in, "Erin Brockovich" but she was very good as Daisy. Her acting was quieter, more human and more natural.

I love all 3 ladies in this movie, but I think Lili Taylor is so great in her role! She's just so fun!

Bring out then Gimp... horrible to be typecast that way

In 1988 Yale was only $18K all in including Room and Board...it was the 1990s and early 2000s when tuitions went insane...in 1984 when I went off to freshman year I turned down MIT since their aid package sucked and accepted another engineering school that was $13K all in since they offered a $7K half scholarship...

Mystic is a real town in CT about 130 miles from Manhattan via I-95 on the way towards Boston...

Actuarial Lurker

Joe and Kevin- You can go up the coast 350 miles from Manhattan in about 8 hours by car stopping in Mystic, CT then Portsmouth, NH, Portland, ME and then just north to Freeport, ME and up to Bar Harbor, ME and drive back on I-95 through Boston on the round trip back. You bypass Boston on the way up by hugging the coast and there are bed and breakfasts all up and down the route. Freeport is essentially high-end outlet shopping central with the LL Bean headquarters, Brooks Brothers, Coach, Talbots and then more normal places like Old Navy. Things are 30%-50% off and East Coast people will travel up from NYC to buy an entire car full of stuff and drive home loaded up and mid-Westerners and West Coasters even send BOXES of UPS Ground home. I've seen people buy $4,000 of clothes for $2,000 and ship stuff back for under $500. https://www.freeportvillagestation.com/store-directory/

My very Catholic grandmother had a glowing Jesus Heart- just the Heart mind you- hanging in her house. Would freak you out when getting up at 3am and walking down the hall to pee....

This was Matt Damon's first film as well...age 18 asking Mom if she wants the green stuff

Nightmares for years!!

The Mystic Seaport is a must, the Mystic Aquarium, and the Mystic Village too! To me, the best time of year to come is during the Fall when the trees all so colorful and beautiful! You can walk downtown, over the drawbridge, and up the hill to Mystic Pizza! Plus, most of the tourists have gone by then, so you wouldn't have to deal with the crowds as much! When you get hungry, The Steak Loft in Mystic has some incredible dishes on their menu with plenty of steak, seafood, etc. to choose from! Also, Newport, RI is a great place to go, too! They have a dozen , or so, mansions that you can tour, and there's a cliff walk right down next to the water. My Husband and I used to go there a lot when we were first married. Lots of great walkable shops downtown to get souvenirs and gifts. We bout our first art piece, a lighthouse painting from a gallery on the strip that sells art done by the locals. They even had a section that was done by kids. incredible stuff! Fort Adams has a beautiful place to take a picnic lunch, overlooking the water and the Newport Bridge. I feel so lucky to have grown up so close to the water. There's nothing like the calm you feel watching the waves crash on the beach, and when you breath in the ocean air... ugh! It's my favorite place on earth! It will be the most scenic trip you'll ever take... unless you go to Alaska! Hahahaaaa!
