Who needs technicolor anyway?

Comments

Alex

I was hoping for 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' or ' The Brain That Wouldn't Die'

Yankee Veg

Can't say I'd be disappointed with any of these!

Cosmic Slice

I have to go with Duck Soup and It Happened One Night. The legendary Frank Capra and the Marx Brothers (this movie was referenced by Jimmy Smitts in The West Wing)

Cosmic Slice

Hopefully we get them all eventually!

Roland

I've seen about half of these, so fine with any of those. Fine with all of them TBH. I went with Rebecca, Notorious, and The Big Sleep in the end.

Toc

The Third Man......AFTER Kevin has seen "Citizen Kane"!!!! Kev: an Insomnia Cinema is in order for that one! GREAT movie (and short!) Let's cross that off your list! Then "The Third Man"!

Toc

PS: Great poll!

Claire Eyles

Maltese Falcon (top knotch Film Noir classic with bonus Hays code era queer coding), Rebecca (atmospheric Gothic Romance also with bonus Hays code era queer coding), The Third Man (worth seeing for the cinematography and lighting alone) would be my top picks. Any on the list would be fantastic though.

Alka

Went with Rebecca and It Happened One Night. But the list is truly a good one!

seth e.

just read and saw rebecca, it's great!

I🖤Kraken

All amazing choices but of course, Roman Holiday.

Statmanjeff

Watched The Third Man once. Never saw what the big whoop over it was all about. Saw Rebecca, The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep and The Great Dictator once as well. Don't remember much of any of them (except Hitler's dance with the world in The Great Dictator).

Paul T Hewes

Should have included the great art house film "Dead Man" by Jim Jarmusch from the 1990s. Johnny Depp and a slew of others like Robert Mitchum, Bill Bob Thorton, Iggy Pop, Jared Harris...Sound track is Neil Young grinding on guitar.

Lars G

Duck Soup is the movie for the times we live in.

Just Lily

It happened one night is the birth of a romcom and roman holiday is splendid.... decisions decisions

Chemical Em

notorious or rebecca or roman holiday but all are great movies!!!

The Inedible Mattman

I think my next movie request will be “Inherit the Wind”. A truly spectacular black and white film.

vala p

Some of these movies are perfect for Creepy Housekeeper Autumn.

vala p

If this turns into an Orson Welles appreciation channel, I would not be disappointed

vala p

We need Duck Soup because it's one with Zeppo in it and the boys liked that episode of Buffy so much.

CK in ZH

Yes, I could almost not vote for any of them because any of them will do. I'm more of a romance/comedy guy, so decided to put in Roman Holiday and Duck Soup.

that girl

I voted for The Great Dictator, given the current state of the world, but I'm really happy for any of these.

Toc

Right on, Vala!

Toc

Agreed!

Toc

No spoilers, please!

Sweetbaby Silvernale

My vote would be Wings of Desire but I think you all did that one already so I’m happy with any of these. Ooo…maybe Village of the Damned 1960

nycDawn

I voted for Rebecca but the Great Dictator is also very good.

Kt B

You’ve already seen “12 Angry Men,” right?

Statmanjeff

And here I thought I was being pretty damn vague.

JENNIFER E

If the answer is no, my next purchase is sorted.

kosmickrab

That's the first time I've voted for everything.

Carl Wilson

Like others, I would watch any of these! It Happened One Night kind of invented the romantic comedy, so I'd call it required viewing. I voted for The Big Sleep because (a) Bogart & Bacall, and (b) its plot is kind of famously convoluted because of studio censorship and other factors, and it would be fun to watch you guys try to follow it!

Chemical Em

film suggestion for future polls- the naked kiss (1964)

Eurocheese

I hope we get lots of these again because honestly, every single choice here is excellent.

Actuarial Lurker

I picked 4: It Happened One Night, Maltese Falcon, Rebecca, and Duck Soup. Duck Soup is a comedy classic and they haven't done much of any OLD comedies- that's why I did a pick of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein coming up in about 6 weeks... I've watched half of Maltese Falcon, but gave up on it, never saw Rebecca or It Happened One Night- just voted based on reputation

vala p

Holy cats, it's you, the person from the intro. You're famous 😍
