Tyler Explains It All

I got to see this on Broadway in 2019 on July 5. The day before I saw the fireworks off the East River and then I went to the 9/11 memorial to prepare myself for this show and just to pay my respects for all the many people who died that day and the following days because of it. After the show, I got to talk to members of the cast at the stage door. I got to talk to the woman who played Bonnie (Petrina Bromley), she was the nicest human ever. She showed me pictures of when she got to meet up with the actual Bonnie and just talked to me about teaching the other cast members the Newfie accent. (She is from Newfoundland, Canada). I wish I could send a picture here to show you all.

K

This is my friend’s favourite musical, I’ve seen it 4 times live because she drags me along every time it’s touring anywhere near us. I’ve never seen the proshot so excited to watch along with you guys and see how the Newfie accents are 😅 Hope you guys liked it!

Ahhhhhim so excited for this (but going to watch Gilmore first). My friend and I both loved this show so much that we went to Newfoundland on a trip together back in 2019. We drove all over, but while we were in Gander we met up with a local we knew from the Facebook fan group for the show, and she brought the mayor to have lunch with us! (Mayor Claude from the show!). Newfoundland was amazing, the show is so great, and I’m so excited to see your reaction.

This was the last Broadway show I took visiting family to see (with mostly the same cast as this recording) before COVID shut everything down. It's not as famous as Hamilton of course but it's hardly obscure, it got a ton of Tony nominations. At the time I worked as a software engineer for an event ticketing company (not Ticketmaster, before I get any hate lol) and I had an intern I mentored who did a lot of work on our event page layout and always used this show to demo his work, because he was Canadian and this show inspired a lot of national pride for him.

Saw this on Broadway back in 2017. Most of these actors are the original ones. This was the first stage door I ever did, and they were all just the nicest people. I have that playbill with their signatures on the very top of my playbill collection.

Oh I'm SO excited to watch this again with you two! I wish it was better known because it was absolutely beautiful! I saw it on a trip to New York on Broadway in February 2020 right before everything shut down from Covid. This is one of my favorites and I wish it had run for 20 years. Such a shame it closed!!

Tyler Explains It All

Fun fact: the Jacket that Jen Colella wears when playing Beverly Bass (the pilot) is Beverly's actual jacket. She gave it to her to use. Beverly Bass came to the opening night and saw the show over 60 times. On opening night, she brought her all female crew to see the show.

Willow

Please please please keep doing musicals. Company, legally blonde, Suffs, merrily we roll along pro-shots have come out in just the past decade-ish. (Ok legally blonde is way older but I don’t care)

Willow

I had the weirdest reaction when I saw come from away the first time. the whole show I just kept getting angrier and angrier about the optimism and how much we squandered. My grandma had to calm me down after. I love it I was just caught off guard the first time.

Willow

Galinda’s entrance “it’s good to see me isn’t it?” from the first performance of wicked after shutdown is on YouTube it makes me cry every time.

sharkey197

Come from Away opened in March of 2017 and ran for 1669 performances. It won the Tony for Best Director.

Taylor

A little bit of background on the show: It was written by a husband and wife writing team who went to that 10th anniversary gathering in 2011 and interviewed the people there. That’s where the specific stories come from. There’s also a great video of the original cast performing the show at a concert in Gander in front of the same people they’re playing.

Harriet Loughnan

I second this! Also waitress and Matilda the musical are fantastic. We can skip Dear Evan Hansen and Mean Girls though lol

Harriet Loughnan

This was the movie on your list I was most excited to see your reaction to! Love musicals, this show is so special and not enough people know about it.

vala p

I love how available Proshots are lately.

Abby T W

And it should have won so many more than it did! I still think it's a travesty that it doesn't have the Best Musical Tony.

vala p

Of course they were nice, they were all a bunch of Canadians 😉

Allison O

Now that I’ve watched your reaction! Which I loved! I first saw Come From Away at Ford’s Theater in DC right before it went to Broadway - they purposely did a tryout in DC, and a special free preview, for Pentagon survivors and family members to see how it would be received in a community affected by 9/11 before it went to New York. When it was over the entire theater leapt to their feet, I’ve never seen anything like it. I clapped so hard that when I left the theater my hands were red and swollen and sore. The first thing I said was “Jenn Colella is getting a Tony nomination” (she did). Random stuff: cod au gratin is actually great (kind of like baked mac and cheese, without the mac. And with fish.). Hannah O’Rourke in real life is a little old Irish lady - I think having her played by a Black actress was part of anonymizing her. Fans of the show have found Kevin O’Rourke’s name on the 9/11 memorial. She and Beulah really are still friends* (update, I just saw that Hannah has actually passed away as of last year). Charles Burlingame is real too and has a spot at the Pentagon memorial. Nick and Diane are still married. They’ve all seen the show. Beverly Bass has seen it like 80+ times. I just adore this show. For anyone in the DC area, a new production is running at Ford’s this fall for the 25th anniversary.

Allison O

Also, I so recommend visiting Newfoundland for anyone looking for a vacation idea. There is definitely a LOT of influence from Irish settlers in the area. It’s sort of like visiting Iceland and Ireland in one - fiddle music in every pub, and icebergs offshore. Very rural and remote in the west and central parts, but St. John’s (the capital) on the Atlantic coast was so much fun.

vala p

Hadestown is coming soon.

Allison O

In the hockey rink! I wish that documentary about the road to Broadway were more available. It was really good.

vala p

I don't love Dear Evan Hansen so I say this show was robbed!

Cosmic Slice

In regards to Newfoundland, it is the most Irish place in the world outside of Ireland. The Irish comedian Danny O'Brien said it's like Mayo and Galway had a love child and sent it to Canada to become an alcoholic. And yes, being "screeched in" is a real thing. 😁 This is based on the real reporting of what is called Project Yellow Ribbon and that is worth watching, if only to see what the small staff of air traffic controllers dealt with that day

So glad that you guys watched this! Truly an underrated musical in my eyes--it's so well crafted, and I'm a sucker for a true ensemble piece! The timing on this couldn't be better, I'm seeing a regional production at the Guthrie next week, so I'll have the soundtrack on repeat for a while I'm sure!!

Harriet Loughnan

And now having watched it, I do always forget how much it makes me cry. I've seen it live in Australia 3 times - it was also the first show I saw after the Covid lockdowns. On a roadtrip my friend and I once decided to play the cast album and just cried the entire way home. I was thrilled that I wasn't driving. It just has so much humanity in it. And is extra affecting when bad things are happening around the world.

Jamie Morgan

I went to see this on the West End with my friend - 2 days before the UK went into quarantine, in fact - and he was adamant that I didn't look up anything about the show before I saw it, so I went into it knowing as much as you guys did. The 9/11 reveal COMPLETELY caught me off guard, and I just spend the entire show either laughing or crying, no in-between! Anyone who is old enough to remember 9/11 almost certainly has trauma from it, wherever you're from. I was 12 years old in England when it happened, and I didn't even realise how much it had affected me until I saw Come From Away and I was finally able to alleviate a little bit of those feelings. It's honestly massively therapeutic. It doesn't downplay what happened or gloss over the ugly sides of it, but it still leaves you feeling hopeful. Absolute masterpiece, I wish it was more widely known.

Sinead

I was able to see the West End cast preform this in Dublin prior to them opening on the West End with my mum. She is from Nova Scotia and lived in Newfoundland for many years, when this happened cousins of hers in nova Scotia took people in also and are still in touch to this day. This is a story very close to her heart and we spent a lot of the performance crying. It is a beautiful show.

Joy M

It really reminded me of what it was like to evacuate from Hurricane Katrina. You ended up in a shelter or staying in a friend’s house banding together to cook and clean, get diapers, get meds, dealing with no electricity, cell phone towers down, etc.

Andreas

Best show ever!

Andreas

I remember seeing this live for the first time and the AMOUNT of marks for the chairs on the floor!!!! INSANE!

Jeff

I'd never seen this, so in preparation for watching it with you I read the book, "The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland" by Jim Defede. Published in 2003, t's mostly an oral history told by many of the people who we then meet in the play. I highly recommend it, especially after seeing this wondrous production. It's beyond amazing how the creators of this show were able to adapt such a somber true story into a musical play without minimizing or cheapening the experiences of everyone involved.

Andreas

Have you done NEXT TO NORMAL yet?

Youtalkingtome

Thanks for the suggestion! This musical was incredibly moving for me, so I absolutely want to do a deeper dive into the history.

Youtalkingtome

People have such wonderful capacity for kindness when the chips are down. I really wish it didn't require such desperation for us to find it.

Youtalkingtome

Thank you! Everything felt so very Irish to me in this production, so that makes so much sense.

Youtalkingtome

I felt the same! I was either laughing or on the verge of completely breaking down for the entire show. I was completely in my feelings.

Youtalkingtome

That sounds like such an amazing experience! How wonderful that you were able to live that! Though: I love cod, and I love cheese, but I am terrified to try them together like that.

Youtalkingtome

I wish you guys could share pictures too. That is amazing

K

It’s incredible live, and I find the shorter musicals with no intermission much more ADHD friendly— even the best musical I’m usually losing my mind by the end of the second half but this one had me engaged the whole way through all 4 times haha

sharkey197

Just finished this for the 4th time. And I saw it on Broadway.

Roland

Thanks for the book rec!

Holly Ash

Come from away is one of my favorite Broadway musicals and I have waited so long for someone who do a reaction to this. Joined the Patreon the moment I saw you post the YouTube version today and it was everything I wanted it to be. Love your reactions and can’t wait to see so many more of your full length reactions. Would love to see a reaction to Life of Chuck.

Brina Blue

Thank you so much for watching this musical, it's my absolute favorite! I was lucky enough to catch the official tour I don't remember exactly how many years ago. I was so excited to see this come up on YouTube, that I joined your Patreon again just to see this! I'm sure I'll find plenty of other things to enjoy though!

Megan the Librarian

Thank you, thank you, thank you for reacting to this! Almost no one does! One of the most underrated pro shots in my opinion. If you get a chance, go back and watch the ending of this again. There is actually a curtain call of sorts for the musicians, which is something I had never seen in a musical before! There is also a bonus credit version of Welcome to the Rock where they have pictures of the actual people and places from the show! They did a new staging of this at a local theater in my community, and Kevin T (Gay Lumberjack) was actually there and did a Q&A after the show. It was such a neat experience! I have a co-worker who also loves Come From Away, and every year on 9/11 we participate in Pay it Forward 9/11, where we continue the tradition of random acts of kindness for strangers. Usually, we take ice cream to the local fire station and cookies to the police, etc. It's a great way to turn such a tragic event into a positive remembrance of the way we all came together and its aftermath.
