I adore this movie! So excited to see yalls reaction!

Neill Shaughness

I love this movie. Craig Gillespie is such a good filmmaker (don't believe the hate train regarding Supergirl. I thought the movie was a refreshing change of pace for the genre). This is definitely his best work so far though. Margot Robbie is incredible

Courtney

I was going to request this one in my tradition of enjoying movies about Women Who Start Crazy Shit, so I’m happy it won the poll! This is the first big scandal I remember growing up in the age of 90s tabloid tv/talk shows (other than maybe Amy Fisher), and this movie was an interesting take on the whole thing.

Jonathan

I love this movie. In middle school I had to listen to talk radio on the way to school every day so I heard about this scandal daily, and then when this died down OJ happened.

Jonathan

I’ve read things that said if Tonya had skated today with the new more objective rules in figure skating she would have easily beat out the competition but back then judging was almost all subjective.

For anyone wanting more info on why the triple axel is as hard as it is compared to other types of jumps, here's a 5 minute video breaking it down and also focusing on Tonya Hardng's accomplishment on being the first US woman to land it in competition. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rOQv_6L9fQ

Surya Bonaly was also screwed over by the judges for not matching the rigid standards of the time (she skated at the olympics in 92, 94, and 98), often being cited as "too athletic" and "not graceful enough." There's an episode about her on Netflix's "Losers" which I recommend. She was such a blast to watch and when she knew there was no way she could win (due to botched landings earlier in the routine), she did a "fuck you" to the judges and did a back flip on the ice, landing on one foot at the 1998 olympics. It was an illegal move (you can spin but flips like that are out due to safety reasons) but she sure won the hearts of a lot of people who were watching, including my kid self. She isn't talked about enough in the US since she was skating for France.

Jonathan

I remember that. One side effect of this story was a bunch of people including me got interested in figure skating and I’ve been following it ever since.

1994 was a WILD year. I was also in middle school at the time. This, OJ, Kurt Cobain dying, the end of Apartheid/Nelson Mandele becoming president, and on lighter notes, Friends premiered and the Playstation was released. It was a heck of a time to be alive.

acidnova

Oh for sure! I first loved it in 1992 so having the winter olympics again in 1994 also made it a lot easier to really fall in love with the sport since we got to have that rare back-to-back olympics. I still go back and watch some of the routines from that era (singles and pairs as well) because I loved them so much.

I was a freshman in college when the "incident" happened and my friends and I had a Tonya vs. Nancy party for the Lillehammer figure skating final. I vividly remember the secondhand embarrassment when she stopped her performance (and yes, that happened pretty much exactly like it does in the movie). And after that, not only was she a villain for her perceived role in the Kerrigan attack, she was also a punchline for her Olympics performance. Even MST3K made jokes about her (in the "Soultaker" episode). The real Tonya Harding made a lot of press appearances in promotion of this movie, and she even went to the Oscars with the people from the movie.

acidnova

Here's a link to the video of Tonya's attempt to skate. It includes the backstage footage of her and the coaches trying to lace up the skates. You can see that the movie did a very good job recreating that whole event. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ms5Xk2vobiM

ScarlettMi

Two things about the 1994 Olympics that are seared into my memory is Tonya’s busted laces with her foot up on the judges stand. And then Nancy shit talking Oksana Baiul (who won gold) for crying. Ladies figure skating was insane that year.

Jonathan

In the bonus features they had some of the real interviews they were recreating the crazy bird on Allison’s shoulder was right from the real LaVonna interview

Jonathan

I saw Tonya right before this movie on Worst Cooks in America. She came off as a very pleasant person on there and I heard from someone that knows her now that she is a great mom. I’m sure the actual truth of this was a little less sympathetic than this movie but she definitely was the person hurt the most from this unfairly.

Jonathan

This makes me hope you get to Cobra Kai at some point to see more of Paul Walter Hauser playing a similar but less scummy character to Shawn.

Jonathan Eaton

OMG that soundtrack is un-freaking-believable!

vala p

Also, back then they still had to do the compulsory figures which they have done away with, so that's one less thing for today's skaters to master. And now they're allowing flips.

vala p

I am convinced the reason Allison Janney won the Oscar is because in real life she's an absolute delight so people knew how hard she was acting to play the worst mother in the world.

vala p

Oksana earned every inch of that gold.

vala p

You and I are the same age. I was rooting for Tonya at that Olympics not to win, just to rise above it. I really wanted Oksana to win. Or Katarina to pull off a miracle.

Skating is a white rich person sport. Skaters get judged on your teeth, ffs. Teeth never count in a 4 x 400 relay, but how the skaters look, and everything a person does off ice, can count against skaters. Nancy Kerrigan also needed veneers fwiw and a benefactor paid for them because she was also from a working class family, though a healthier one. The podcast You’re Wrong About has an **excellent** couple of episodes on Tonya Harding by the author of the brilliant piece on her in The Believer, Sarah Marshall, if anyone is interested. The article in The Believer is called Remote Control, published Jan 2014. The 90s and 00s were a time of shaming women for all kinds of bs, like how everyone hated Tonya for being unpolished. People were awful to Tonya even before the attack, and were especially brutal after. It was only in the last few years that Tonya kinda sorta admitted that maybe she knew about the attack beforehand, which of course changes things.

There’s definitely nuance to the issues. If it is just a class thing then that’s obviously not fair. If an athlete is representing their country though you are saying this person is the best our country has to offer. They should represent the ideals of sportsmanship and fair play because they will be a role model for children. There’s clearly a deeply misogynistic aspect to it though if the women are being penalised for not being ladylike enough but there are men currently competing at the international level who are rapists and in the case of one Dutch Olympian a convicted paedophile.

that girl

I think the title is a reference to I, Claudius

that girl

There are downsides to modern scoring. A hard jump with a botched landing will net you a better score than an easier jump with a perfect landing, so you're seeing more and more elite skaters stumbling or outright falling in competition.

Tom Rand

Great performances all round but the local loser who likes to pretend he’s some kind of mobbed up tough guy is such an instantly recognisable character and Paul Walter Hauser just nails it.

Lola Lirola

Such an incredible show. If it's findable somewhere, they should watch it!

AudeAudor

yup ! her story is incredible. Not enough celebrated in France either imo.

Toc

that was FANTASTIC. Hadn't seen that movie before. Whenever I see a great movie made in the 21st century, I celebrate! Great movie, unbelievable performances, and so well directed!!! Thanks, J&K!

While Tonya Harding is a very complicated and controversial figure she was another example of 90s women being drug through the mud by the tabloid, late nite, and professional media way more then the men in their lives who were also involved. One of the early examples of cancel culture. Monica Lewinsky, Pamela Anderson, and Tonya Harding where all examples of women who were drug through the mud in the media way harder than the men who were just as complicent if not even more guilty in their various scandals. And while I don't hold these women up on a pedestal as virtuous role models, the way the media vilified and slut shamed them while the various men were largely either able to fade into obscurity like Tonyas ex, serve a small sentence and then continue his life like Tommy Lee, or be impeached but not removed from office in Clinton's case while the women all kind of faded into obscurity having their careers and future opportunities ruined. Pamela Anderson has only recently started to make a semi comeback 30 years after her sex tape scandal.

TC Elba

excited to watch this movie. haven't actually seen it . funnily enough only really found out about tonya harding when watching diagnosis murder with my gran as a kid and they did an episode parodying it and my gran explained the true story.

nia

And Jessica Hahn. She was drugged and sa’d by preacher Jim Bakker and his friend and then *she* was branded a harlot. The men “repented” for having an *affair* and made it sound like they were weak victims of a seductress. They trafficked her from NY to Florida for the sole purpose of sa-ing her. Vile men. Have you listened to the You’re Wrong About episodes about some of these women? They covered Harding, Hahn, and many more.

nia

Presenting your equipment failure to the judges is proper procedure but so many people mocked her for it. She could not win. (Accidental pun!)

Seth Walker

I haven't heard of that series. I'll have to check it out. As a former republican, I always looked at the Democrats with such revulsion for their hypocrisy in how they continued to support Bill Clinton after his sex scandals and yet the women were slandered. Of course at the time I was blind to the hypocrisy of the Republicans. Granted the Republican party of the time was much different than what it is today. But that eras party did pave the way for what it became today. Still the fact the the Democrats allowed Clinton to walk away largely unscathed after his sexual assaults on women and his fucked up power dynamic affair with Lewinsky... that I believe was the first major step in weakening the party in the mainstream Americans eyes and paving the way for a monster like Trump to be able to attain power not once, but twice....

Youtalkingtome

That's a really good observation. I hadn't considered the time frame when destroying women publicly for sport was a national pastime. The Lewinsky stuff still infuriates me, and I will never listen to a word Jay Leno has to say about today's uncivil discourse after the way he made his career attacking her. I seriously loathe him for it.

Seth Walker

Yeah, not just him. He was the worst but they all took their shots at her. It was beyond deplorable but it's what the public largely wanted. They wanted to crucify her and let good old Bill off scott free. So fucking annoying.

Liam Mcfarlane

It's so sad that she was the first American woman to land a triple axel in competition and yet her career was defined by the actions of her dumb husband and his dumb friend. Yes, she was a flawed person and had some unlikable traits, but I genuinely don't believe she knew about the full extent of the plot but Jeff and Shawn screwed her to save their own bacon.

Youtalkingtome

That's really tragic. This movie and real life apparently, made it seem like she never had a chance

Youtalkingtome

If she did know that's awful. If things did go down this way then it's horrible what happened to her

Youtalkingtome

That does sound wild. I need read more about figure skating cause I know very little

Youtalkingtome

I'm glad this movie exists for her. I'm sure it's the only way she could really get people to hear her side of things

Youtalkingtome

Oh he directed Supergirl? I've been waiting to check it out but the reviews have been disheartening

Youtalkingtome

It's really awesome that this movie exists for her.

Neill Shaughness

Speaking only for myself, I am astounded at the negative reviews. Not that I think Supergirl is a perfect film, but many of the reviews set up impossible standards for the movie to live up to. Some of them are straight up contradictory. There was one review from Variety that went viral right before opening weekend that was especially ridiculous. At one point the reviewer posits that the movie didn't give her a strong enough reason for trying to save Krypto which A: isn't true, the movie absolutely gives her a dramatic connection to Krypto, and B: shouldn't have to, it's her dog. I'm ready to believe she would fight to save her dog. Ghoulish stuff like that. It's a smaller, lower stakes character driven Superhero film, and frankly I think we need more of those. I think audiences are so used to the Marvel formula that different approaches freak them out now.

Toc

Absolutely fantastic miniseries, one of the greatest ever, definitely one of the most groundbreaking. Have been dying to see someone react to that. Maybe on this channel one day! This is one of the only channels that COULD do it justice!

dys

I was 8 years old when Nancy Kerrigan was attacked in 1994, and I had no memory of it, I only learned about the whole story when this movie came out. But I don't quite see how Monica Lewinsky or Pamela Anderson could belong in the same category as Tonya Harding... neither Lewinsky or Anderson ever hurt anybody. I do have clear memories of the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal dominating the national news even though I was still pretty young then, and as a 10 year old boy then as far as I knew they were both grownups, I had no concept of what that age and power gap meant. It's crazy that the public didn't have much more nuanced a view than I did as a 10-year-old boy, seemingly no one stopped to think about what the power dynamic between a 50-year-old president of the United States and an intern in her early 20s would be. I just don't see that as in any way comparable to Tonya Harding though, vilified by the media sure, but someone close to her DID actually traumatically assault Nancy Kerrigan and I wouldn't convict Harding of orchestrating it in court but... she probably was involved.

dys

I just now realized young Tonya is played by McKenna Grace, she's so great in The Haunting of Hill House. You guys might have mentioned having seen some of Mike Flanagan's movies or shows before but if you haven't seen The Haunting of Hill House or Midnight Mass, highly highly recommend.

dys

I did see the 96 Olympics in Atlanta because I lived in Atlanta at the time.

cruzinbosco

Yes, 1000x recommend HOHH!!! A masterpiece.
