I love this episode & I feel like it's so much more rewarding on a rewatch because you know to be on the lookout for things that tie back to The Wizard of Oz. I believe the dog (mostly white & named Rabbit) is an allusion to Alice in Wonderland. There are also tons of references to the Coen brothers films here, including The Hudsucker Proxy, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, O Brother, No Country, & even True Grit. But I do hate that it kills off one of the few characters I had any empathy for this season.

My God, this episode was gorgeous. I loved the Wizard of Oz homage - I was practically on the edge of my seat when the kid went to open the door, like ‘OMG, they’re gonna do the thing!’ Plus, there was just something about how they shot the black and white section that felt so much like an old movie. Not a modern movie without color, but something actually made in the ’30s/‘40s. I can’t quite put my finger on what made it that way, but it was perfect. I’m not sure where I fall on whether the kid should return home or seek out a new life on his own. A dangerous and violent world he knows vs. a dangerous maybe-violent-maybe-happy one he doesn’t… But I really like the fact they didn’t show his decision yet. Also, Billboard Guy was amazing.

Profound existentialist billboard guy was amazing! I also didn't catch until I saw the episode title later that the two hotel owner sisters were the wicked witches of the East and West.

You're do right about the Barton Fink nods (I missed it). Really sad about Rabbi dying, too.

OMG - I didn’t notice either, that’s brilliant!

I think we'll see Satchel again. The fact that he passed by the billboard again suggests that he is walking back the way they originally came.
